I just want to say for my first post to the #Fediverse that I've already seen more #alttext in the last couple of days than I've literally seen in my entire life. I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content. Think I'll write an introduction soon.

@ontheotherside
First of all, welcome to this space.
It's very satisfying reading this as a person who cares deeply about having alt-text on my attached media and encourages other people to do so.

If there's something else you can educate me/us in order to improve your experience, please do share!

@ontheotherside

Very happy to meet you! When I add alt text, it will be nice to know that real folks rely on it.

@ontheotherside
Welcome.
And thanks for the feedback.

I'm kinda tearful and glad to hear that we're making a difference when we add alt-texts.

@ontheotherside so stoked to read this!! Do the hashtags come through as well, even if the words aren't capitalized? I was so paranoid about that on Twitter as soon as I learned that capitalization was the only way to make them accessible.
@ontheotherside it's surprising how quickly it becomes habitual and good to hear that it's welcome.
@ontheotherside

One feature that I loved the second that I saw it on my instance was "auto caption". I don't know if it's a default thing on CalcKey or my instance owner,
@Kitty, is just awesome but it's a really great feature.

Being able to pre-populate alt text with an approximation of the text in an image is great. It makes it much faster and easier to generate alt text for an image. The onus of doing so absolutely should be on the person posting the image because we're the one who can identify and correct errors in the OCR.

Full disclosure: it's labeled as being in beta so who knows what will come of it in the future. There's also an option to disable it in settings so you don't accidentally click it for people so distrustful of AI that they don't want to send pictures for OCR.
@ontheotherside I try to add alt text to images. But sometimes I mess up and forget, but it is always ok to remind me.

@ontheotherside This alt text has costed us a lot of sweat and tears. "please use alt text, disabled users need it", over and over, again and again, every single time a wave of newcomers arrives.

It's so reassuring to know all this has not been in vain.

@yuki2501 Mastadon has been an internet space where people seem to listen sometimes! Thanks for your advocacy! I’ve improved my practice of alt text through the posts I’ve seen!

@ontheotherside I love that about mastodon too!

Also, I'm not sure if you would be interested in something like this, but there is also a server called dragonscave.space that has a large community mostly made up of visually impaired people, if you'd ever like to have a space to hang out in where accessibility is enshrined in the rules 🀍 Welcome to the fediverse!

@ontheotherside I am not tech savvyand wasn't familiar with its importance, but in my early mastodon experiences I read posts explaining the importance of #alttext and therefore make certain to add it to my pictures.
@ontheotherside Doing my best. Good to hear it's making a difference.
@ontheotherside blob emoji with heart for you!

@ontheotherside

Welcome. It's your fediverse too. :)

@ontheotherside Welcome! If you have any questions feel free to ask, and check out #feditips for features and nav questions.
@ontheotherside As a blind person who's been on Mastodon for years now, this never gets old and it will always hit you like a ton of good bricks every time someone does it and/or helps others do it.

@ontheotherside Oh yes, I've seen so many alt texts here. And here they are almost always shown!
I try to add alt texts to all of my media (which.. aren't a lot to be honest), so everyone can read my posts. At least if they understand the post language, which varies between English and German.

The only issue I heard of, are custom emojis. Especially with weird names. I hope my emojis aren't bad in that way

@ontheotherside It's because here, engaging with people takes effort. But that effort is actually rewarded by people who *want* to talk to you. Not just by people who talk to you because arguing and it feels good to hit back because that's what algorithms have trained everyone to do.
@ontheotherside welcome! Still working on making my descriptions better on my alt text but yes definitely a community value on Mastadon!
@chicagoburdman @ontheotherside I was surprised too when I joined Mastodon. I just thought it was so cool and never went back.

@ontheotherside

It MAY help that I'm an obnoxiously pedantic blowhard harassing people who don't use #AltText in their pics.

Like, at least a couple times a day.

I'm insufferable, really.

Related: don't follow me. I post a lot of pics. Half the time the #AltText is "You really have to see it to believe it." Completely unhelpful.

I'm a paradox.

@ontheotherside welcome! And glad you can fully participate ... As long as we assist in your "viewing!"
@ontheotherside I really hope we can maintain it in the face of a growing population. Even reminding people that blind people exist gets you branded as an HOA nag lately. :(
@ontheotherside Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad this has been your experience here, and welcome!
@ontheotherside It wasn't until a Mastodon post recommending folks add alttext that I learned of the option and value. This truly is a far more supportive, open social community.
@StormyNight Welcome to the Fediverse!
@ontheotherside people seem to try to remember at least. I do. I still miss some if it's late and I'm not paying attention, but I'm getting better. It helps my app has a tiny, brightly colored warning that lights up if I have an image without a description including. Really like that.
@ontheotherside @abs0 I think it's mostly that the UI makes it easy and gently nags you to do add alt text. Big social media companies could very easily do this, but don't, because it will sell zero additional ads.
@ontheotherside Welcome! I think you'll like it here. #alttext always!
@ontheotherside I am so glad to see this. One of the first things that made me happy about #Mastodon when I joined was #alttext . I use it all the time and encourage others to as well. It's one of the platforms best features cause, you know, #inclusivity
Welcome!
@ontheotherside Welcome😊I wrote my first bit of alt text today because I saw others doing it on the platform

@ontheotherside welcome on the #Fediverse. #Mastodon tried to force the user to add Alt Text and it's a great thing. I have never added alt text to images on social networks before Mastodon !

On Bluesky they added an option in the settings which can tell you if you forgot to add an alt text to the image.

@ontheotherside @Em0nM4stodon I try to post Alt text as much as I can for people like you but sometimes ADHD makes me forget. But WE ARE TRYING! Welcome to the #fediverse #mastodon #accessibility
@ontheotherside welcome. It’s our heading to have you aboard. And thank you for reminding us all of the importance of inclusivity. We want everyone to be part of the conversation. Is the only way things get better!
@ontheotherside the fediverse encouraged me to up my alt text game and I am so happy for that
@ontheotherside Welcome to the fediverse!
@ontheotherside Hi there, being here have taught me to not forget. I have been called out a few times & it helped being more conscious.
I still have to improve my skill at describing what I see or create. When I do sketchnoting it can be hard to be precise b/c there can be a lot on the page...
Anyway, I want to do better. Are there for you criterias that makes alt-text better or put it in another way what would an amazing alt-text look like (no pun intended... or maybe a little πŸ˜‰)?

@ontheotherside Getting used to using #alttext is a drag, being reminded is a combination of annoying and feeling bad for being inconsiderate.
But then, when you’re (finally) used to it, you realise, it’s as if you have a whole extra canvas to paint on (rereading this, notice that it might not be the best of metaphors, ups)

Looking forwards to hearing from somebody who actually uses and needs this:
- what about emoji?
- and commas,
- and parentheses,
- and em-dashes?

PS welcome

@ontheotherside
Hey, makes me feel good that something good has come of me cajoling others to add alt text.

Welcome to Mastodon!

#AltText

@ontheotherside
Continued communication for the uninformed is helpful. Up until last week I literally had no idea alt text was something that provided a tangible benefit
@ontheotherside It's really awesome, isn't it? Oh some people still don't, but the amount that do is much, much better here.
