Being the #worldrumday tonight's #aperitivo #aperitif is a #tiki one from "Easy Tiki" book, the Fog Cutter:

30ml aged agricòle
15ml cognac
15ml London dry gin
22,5ml orgeat
15ml amontillado sherry
30ml lemon juice

Shake&Strain and garnish with an orange twist and mint spring.

A masterpiece, highly recommended!

I didn’t really do any research ahead of time, as it was an impulse buy. I went with Clément VSOP because it seemed to be a premium product and I didn’t want to be put off of the category by buying the cheapest option.

Any recommendations on a more representative product?

Wow! Clement is a great bottle to start with.
You can do a good "evening" 'ti punch with it (and also the cocktail I've just posted!).
If you like what you sip, you can try an unaged agricòle for a more complex and "rough" taste.
If you happen to go to France, grab any unaged agricòle you find in a supermarket above 90 proof (Trois Rivieres, Dillon - beware it's a bit salty -, Damoiseau ecc.) os a Saint James Royal Ambré @ 90proof.
If you want an even "stronger" one, try Haitian Clairin.

PS: If you prefer aged agricòle, J. M. Rhum is a great choice.
