I'm excited that Threads exists and hope many make the switch from Twitter. I also hope Meta/Instagram follows through on their word and connects to ActivityPub. I absolutely love the idea of being able to call Mastodon home, but have the ability to follow and interact with people/companies I like on Threads.

But I will never join it. It's not even about the privacy stuff. I'm still on Facebook/Instagram because I have communities locked in there. I just despise algorithmic timelines and ads.

@mark absolutely! I can’t even understand why some people don’t seem to mind it, it drives me crazy.
@mark Agreed. I hope that they connect to ActivityPub, but I expect that they won’t 🙄
@libraryvines @mark I’m more worried if we’re gonna be able to use Ivory with our @threads.net handle 😆
@kamalaitbrahim @libraryvines I'm almost certain that won't ever be able to happen.
@mark @libraryvines So it’s not enough to have Threads interacts with ActivityPub, but they should have an open API for it to happen?
@kamalaitbrahim @libraryvines Yup. And even if they did, we probably wouldn't touch it. Nobody intentionally touches fire twice.
@libraryvines @mark I would be astonished if Facebook actually connects. They have a long and tired history of lying and dissembling.
@mark I couldn’t agree with you more Mark, although I have joined Thread, I just don’t think it has the same feeling to me as Mastodon does.
@mark Mastodon has changed a lot of us in that way I think!
@mark You might need to open your instance to Ivory users, as a ton of the Fediverse has already indicated they’ll block/defederate from Meta. Probably going to have to switch instances over this. Personally I 100% agree with you and this will do the exact same things for the same reasons.
@mark I’ll also likely never go there. Instagram is super annoying to get to stuff you saved / liked while it’s super easy to just consume what algorithm gives you.
It’s obvious where priorities are and I rarely use Ig for anything.
@aleck Yea I despise the Facebook/Instagram algorithm.
@mark I’m not trading one megalomaniac for another.
@JJPeterson For sure. But Threads on ActivityPub would give me one thing I miss most about Twitter.
@mark and if it becomes exactly what you want, a rich white narcissist who wants every last penny he can squeeze out of threads (and who has never exhibited a single human emotion) will be making the decisions.
@mark Hi Mark. Have Meta/Instagram said when they will connect to ActivityPub?
@DeeMee Nope.
@mark @DeeMee I think I’ve read something about three month, but not 100% sure anymore.

@mark they did promise chronological following-only timeline in a future update, but at the moment it’s the absolute worst of Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit combined, minus ads. Even the companies you’d want to follow mostly just (re)post terrible memes.

Might all be worth it eventually for frictionless entry into Fediverse for an average person though.

@mark even if it wasn’t Meta, not having a feed that’s only who you follow is just a non-starter. I don’t want to see randos that the algorithm decides should be popular today
@mark they have said they are working on a chronological timeline. I hope it actually happens because I hate algorithmic.
@mark the thing that would ultimately keep me off Threads beyond liking it here is the fact that it essentially converts your Instagram account. I’d rather keep that separate.
@mark yep, exactly the same for me. Exactly.
@mark "The enemy of our enemy is the enemy's enemy. No more, no less." - Rule 29, "The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries"
@mark it seems like it will be a perfect place for brands and influencers, but for ordinary folks we'll see
@mark First paragraph I agree with, second not so much as I avoid anything to do with Meta like the plague!
@mark I think they'll stick to their guns about ActivityPub, considering the main screen when you signup to threads mentions AP, a model on the website mentions different servers and interop with Mastodon (AP), and such
@mark Same. Considered joining just to park my username, but as it turns out if I have an IG account it parks the username on Threads. Shame, really wanted to give Zuck more of my info 🤷
@mark Ditto, going to deactivate my profile there the moment they federate and I can follow people from my single-instance
@mark I joined it just in case, cause I have a brand account to manage and all, but this is my hope as well. That I can delete (or let it rot) later and just be here but follow those there.
@mark It should be interesting to see Instagram morph into an ActivityPub channel. One of the #1 use cases for Twitter in the early days was to share IG posts on it. I suspect that a similar thing will happen here. People will share IG posts with ease.
@mark You’ve summed up exactly my feelings about it. On Twitter I never ever check the For You crap and I can’t stand ads. Nothing unethical about ads but for me they’re unbearable noise. I even mute the TV on commercial breaks.
@mark This, absolutely this. I can't stand Meta and their attempt at ads. Defederalizing will just make them more stronger.
@mark Exactly...

And I have joined because I'm incurably curious, and yes, the algorithmic timeline is a big turn off...

Now if you play a bit with it, you also understand that they released it as an unfinished product. They released it as early as possible (basically when the basic functions were stable) to be able to kick Twitter while it was down...

It will get better. But yes, if it ever federates with the Fediverse, as they're still promising, I'll have no reason to stay there.

@mark I'm rooting for Threads. My niche groups have shown no interest in moving from Twitter until Threads came along. I love the idea that I can connect with them from Mastodon without giving up my privacy and being bombarded with ads. Go Zuck 🤣

From @esqueer posted on #Threads

"This is such bullsh*t. I wrote a post about how someone called me a groomer and how I called them out and I got hit with a violation. This is my 3rd violation already. Meanwhile, all of the people who have called me groomer and misgendering me have not been met with violations.

This platform is not safe for trans people."

@mark but but what about the mass genocide in Myanmar?
