Ikea’s #Matter over #Thread smart plug with power metering, Grillplats, is finally here in EU at 7,99€ aaaand of course the power metering is not exposed to #HomeKit via custom characteristics, just like with the older Inspelning. The only option if you need HK-readable power values still remains Eve Energy at exactly 5x the price. #ikea
Sure, Verge, first-party hardware and AI is gonna fix Apple Home’s problems. Lack of basic software features or any kind of access control beyond the most basic security ones isn’t magically gonna be solved by AI or a piece of hardware. It’s still the same basic tech demo they introduced *checks notes* 12 years ago, all it needs is some (a lot of) software development. There’s plenty of accessory makers and plenty of us willing to build better apps if we had APIs #homekit https://www.theverge.com/tech/916698/apple-home-ternus-hardware-homepad-rumors
Will a new CEO help realize Apple’s smart home potential?

John Ternus inherits a smart home platform that’s been waiting a decade to matter. His first act could be making it happen.

It's clear that AI assisted coding is dividing developers (welcome to the culture wars!). I've seen a few blog posts now that talk about how some people just "love the craft", "delight in making something just right, like knitting", etc, as opposed to people who just "want to make it work". As if that explains the divide.

How about this, some people resent the notion of being a babysitter to a stochastic token machine, hastening their own cognitive decline. Some people resent paying rent to a handful of US companies, all coming directly out of the TESCREAL human extinction cult, to be able to write software. Some people resent the "worse is better" steady decline of software quality over the past two decades, now supercharged. Some people resent that the hegemonic computing ecosystem is entirely shaped by the logic of venture capital. Some people hate that the digital commons is walled off and sold back to us. Oh and I guess some people also don't like the thought of making coding several orders of magnitude more energy intensive during a climate emergency.

But sure, no, it's really because we mourn the loss of our hobby.

A $499 MacBook Neo with the brains of a couple-year-old iPhone can run Xcode, Photoshop, Blender, Terminal, and pretty much everything else you can think of, yet your $3,200 iPad Pro, with a desktop-class chip, cannot 😑

What are we doing here?

I guess we’re stuck with these wobbly fragile ports forever.

China is going to save all of our butts, if there are any butts left to be saved by then.
