these pseudo free market libertarian tough guys are all "I shall prove my innovation mettle on the field of battle" until there's the slightest bit of competition, then they immediately get a full diaper
it's genuinely wild how we heard nothing but long winded platitudes on how innovative silicon valley was for like 20 straight years and it's all culminated in a bunch of the dullest, most petulant billionaires imaginable all just copying each other's version of a very basic chat app
And if you pushed back on it, you got accused of being "biased" or "jealous"
This is extremely satisfying, I must say
@KarlBode Hey I think you’re forgetting how they fuck it up in innovative capitalist ways
@KarlBode There was true innovation during the 60s thru the 00s, from microcomputers all the way to the first iPhones. I think what we are seeing now is enshittificiation of Silicon Valley itself, the result of tech companies riding on their own coattails for the past two decades, fueled by the cowardice of venture capitalists who believe the next big innovation is going to come from funding a 7th food delivery app when really it's just another vector to harvest & sell user data to advertisers.
@KarlBode they're all riding the coattails and legends of people who actually built stuff.
@KarlBode Let's go back to IRC and forums
@smeg ... which brings me back to my confusion about the popularity of Reddit and the recent outcry around it.
- So... it's like forums?
- Yes!
- But that means they just reinvented forums with topics?
- Yes!
- So could we instead... use... for-
- No!
@mjjzf @smeg I understand this one. We could use forums, but they won't be connected and nobody wants to make a billion sign-ins anymore.

@ragnell @mjjzf

OAuth is a thing, now. Sign in with your Google/Microsoft/Facebook/etc account. As long as it lets you customize the profile afterward (username, pic, etc)

@smeg @mjjzf Yeah, I use my google account to sign into more than I should. Bastards know my every move.
@KarlBode It's the *magic* of libertarianism.
@KarlBode krugman was unironically correct on the impact of the internet
@KarlBode I don't know the source, but someone sent me this picture of the big five chat apps de jour earlier today and it really just about says it all.
@ddr don’t fix what ain’t broke, amirite?
@KarlBode oh they innovated, only not in ways that benefit you or I. Their businesses are in data mining and monetizing your privacy. That’s what they innovated. The uninspired chat apps are only a side effect.

@KarlBode True, but Twitter 𝘩𝘢𝘴 done seem pretty unique things over the past 8 months.

Uniquely awful. But unique. 🙃

@KarlBode

Yep! I've been decrying "But it's just a fancy chat app!?" for ages ... since facebook and slack. It's been kinda sad.

@KarlBode

Agree 100% but find it embarrassing for politicians, business leaders and the media how they've bought into and amplified the propaganda.

And sadly, that's why so many "ordinary" people are brainwashed enough to still buy it.

With so much proven stupidity around, mankind is doomed.

@KarlBode Remarkable, really. Yet in other ways, not that surprising.
@KarlBode
And people say the art of propaganda is dead
@KarlBode
That's not true, they've also copied each other's video based apps
@KarlBode I blame Ayn Rand. You know "Atlas Shrugged" is enshrined on their bookshelves.
@KarlBode tbf any IT based technology done by capitalists has to survive in capitalism - i.e. being money. This be as safe and inner as possible, unless it brings more money.
@KarlBode I'd love it if they hadn't dragged all of society down with them.
@KarlBode Counterpoint: Acts of the Apostles, a novel about a petulant Silicon Valley billionaire with a messianic vision came out in 1999.

@KarlBode

That fit on a 32Gb USB stick...

@KarlBode

And copying it pretty badly.

@KarlBode And their "innovative" revenue stream for their basic chat app will be.... wait for it...

Selling personal data to advertisers.

@KarlBode they made an entire oscar-winning film over a decade ago about how the zucc stole facebook from two other generic tech bros and he's still out there, threading along
@KarlBode to say nothing of how gates/jobs/musk never actually developed anything and stole credit from superior coders/programmers. silicon valley has nothing but frauds
@KarlBode Not wrong, but it‘s more complex than that
@KarlBode
Ooo! But one of them was going to be 3D and everything! That's mind blowingly innovative, right?
@smitten
@KarlBode Absolutely clueless looking-the-other-way Silicon Valley and Redmond companies didn’t grok the killer app (people yakking on computers) what-so-ever in the 70s and 80s. They were slow to grok it even in the early 90s. But as soon as they saw $ they dove in headfirst. Killer app hasn’t changed a bit, and the $ is bigger than ever. But these days it’s all about grabbing market share, or tampering with politics, not innovation. So progress has been slow, incremental. Imho.
@KarlBode what if chat, but with rents?
@KarlBode Isn't that just because the Valley has become a long-winded platitude? Form follows function and all that?

@KarlBode I once worked for a promising gaming startup, and we had some cool ideas and at least 1 successful game.

The team spent a year designing new concepts and assets and basic architecture for a new game, then the founder hired a CEO and the CEO decided "chat apps featuring special emojis and designer clothing for 3d avatars" was more important than anything else and had us... shelve our game for this damn chat application.

Company folded 3 months later after a mass walkout, and we received our last paychecks a couple weeks after that.

@KarlBode Oh! And they made a shit ton of money for themselves.

Not the companies/people/community or great products.

Money. For them. To reinvent everything and be called the greatest thing.

This was never going to end well... 🤑

@KarlBode are they arguing on who's gonna attract the biggest racist/fascist/bigot crowd?
@maddler not yet, that comes closer to election season
@KarlBode What a waste. He should instead have cried for antitrust action from the European Commission, as Slack did. :)
@KarlBode I hope all Zuck and Elmo platforms go bye!!

@KarlBode

I should buy shares in my popcorn brand.

@KarlBode “If you’re not breaking things, you’re not innovating,” - https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/the-titan-submersible-was-an-accident-waiting-to-happen Stockton Rush, deceased CEO of submersible touring company OceanGate.
@KarlBode i think the funniest part about this whole twitter thing is elon's feud with scrapers
you are the owner of one of the largest websites on the net surely you can handle a little bit of bandwidth being used by bots
