Kirkland College for Women lasted only ten years — 1968 to 78 — before it was taken over by Hamilton College, which then became coeducational. But its aftereffects still reverberate, and Kirkland itself is sorely missed by many of us who knew it. I wish it could come back.

Limited Engagement with feminism

Looking back on Kirkland College for Women in our misogynistic age

Standing on a stepladder to replace some smoke alarms; an encounter with lowriders & skateboarders in a motel parking lot; my Superman father’s dementia; a mercantile misunderstanding among firefighters; getting lost riding in a storm in San Francisco with Rusty Foster; Karen Carpenter & nostalgia; Captain Kirk, Julian Edelman & the simulation hypothesis.

It may not much matter much to my mastodon friends, but over on dread Substack, my autobiographical zine, with essays about subsistence farming in the Sahel, Silicon Valley kulturekampf, biodigital technopotheosis, literary theory & the Mesopotamian demon Pazuzu just passed 100 paid subscribers. (You can read it & subscribe for free, of course.)

Synthetic biology, the economic & political power of oligarchs, the computational power of AI, & the transhumanist, eugenicist, Ayn-Randian philosophy of Silicon Valley. This witches' brew is my beat. If you want a guide, follow me. If think this won't touch you, bless your heart.

The Coruscating Palace

Finally finished this piece. This one took me the longest time to complete, but I felt good once it was done! This piece is a commission for a scenery sticker that will be released later this year!

Nearly 43 years ago my son Jakob was born, 6 weeks early, infected by the cat-incubated parasite toxoplasma. For his entire life he has dealt courageously with the endless challenges that toxoplasmosis has thrown at him. Now he's losing his apartment, perhaps the harshest blow ever. An essay. https://open.substack.com/pub/johnsundman/p/a-coffee-obsession-sit-down-with?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

My late mother-in-law Jo, a coal-miner's daughter from Evansville, IN, who helped build LSTs during WW2 & worked in a factory for 40 years, was the chaperone for the Racine Belles in A League of Their Own. With the proceeds she bought a mink coat. Now we must sell it.

A photo of Jo helping us dig out from a 3-day blizzard on Martha's Vineyard evokes many entangled memories and some extraordinary coincidences that reveal Evansville to be the true hub of the universe.

I know mastodon isn't a place that harbors much love for substack, but some of my friends on here might still find this worth a look, maybe?

A person wrote an essay accusing me (explicitly, by my name), of 'moral panic' because I decided against using AI to help me complete a novel I've been struggling to complete since 2009. I wrote this essay 👇 in rebuttal.
