Meta says that Threads is going to support the fediverse ActivityPub protocol "soon." So there's no need to go to Threads and give more data to Meta. Make Threads come to you! https://www.wired.com/story/meta-threads-privacy-decentralization/
Don't Join Threads—Make Instagram's 'Twitter Killer' Join You

Meta’s Twitter alternative promises that it will work with decentralized platforms, giving you greater control of your data. You can hold the company to that—if you don't sign up.

WIRED
@lhn That's the plan! I'm only lurking now because federation isn't available yet. But as soon as they start federating I'll show off my cool double-@ handle everywhere I can
@lhn Go to Threads now — today — and reserve your handle(s).

@daniel

Or don't support Transphobic hate groups.

It's a tough call.

@lhn

@lhn @jhpot You effectively can’t follow anyone there, even tho there is a nominal ‘Follow’ button…
@lhn serious question if you already have instagram and threads uses instagram accounts, what data it will collect if you join threads?
@lhn A few creators I've followed for a long time on FB are encouraging followers to go to Threads. I am unfollowing such folks.
@lhn I like that idea. I suspect a lot of friends will end up there but I try to avoid the Meta meat grinder as much as I can so being able to follow them without giving Facebook yet more data appeals
@lhn I was wondering when one of the big socials would realise they can just fedarate.
@lhn Or just...don't. Meta can stay in its own world.
@lhn I’ll pass unless they pay me 😂

@lhn

Twitter's dooooomed!

@lhn I don't use #facebook or #instagram, have no intention to join #threads, but would like to interact with all the people who didn't leave #twitter for #mastodon, but might switch to #threads instead.
@lhn They never really detailed how interoperability would work, and Threads and Mastodon already have features within posts that aren't compatible with one another. Like, optimistically maybe all of the celebrities, media outlets, and regular influencers will set up shop on Threads and people can consume some of their content on Mastodon, but it feels like an enticement for Fediverse users mores than a full offering.
@lhn Moreover individual instances, not users, will decide whether or not Threads federation will be allowed. Some going as far to threaten to defederate instances that federate with Threads. If anything, seems like Mastodon risks a schism over the issue of Threads that threatens to hamper its usefulness as a platform.
@lhn evil corps dont embrace FOSS? Evil. Evil corps do embrace? Also evil. No hope with this worthless crowd.
@lhn If they federate with you and you interact with them, don't they get your data anyway?
@mastodonmigration @kouichi @lhn will blocking them once they federate prevent that? (Earnest question)
@sawauthor I think as long as you don't interact with them you're good.
@kouichi 🤞although that’s leaving a lot to chance 😟
@kouichi @lhn They get your posts. But that's not the data they are after. That stays on your phone (unless you download their app)
@lhn did musk write this?
@lhn Make Threads come to us... Can we reserve the right to decline? Maybe, declined as the default? 😎
@lhn Yeah, I'm starting to doubt they will actually federate.
@lhn nah I’m good. Instagram and Reddit were my worst offenders of microphone access targeted advertising.
@lhn Nice dream, but anyone who thinks they know how Threads is going to "support the Fediverse" is just fooling themselves. It most certainly will not be what this article imagines. The reason not to join Threads is because it is a another junk suckware app from one of the worst companies in the world.
@lhn That makes them easier to snip and throw away 👍🏿
@lhn I make Threads not being able to federate with anything I have admin access to.
@lhn I don't think they will. I guess they initially thought it would be a good way to sustain growth, but after they overnight became bigger than the whole of Mastodon, they probably see no incentive to do so now. There will be some talk about it for some time - just some form of corporate inertia - but it won't materialize in the end.
@lhn @Jonathanglick This is so good, thank you for writing it.
@lhn This is Meta we’re talking about, right? They’re coming for your data, one way or another, and Threads is the just the latest tool in their arsenal to do so.
@lhn this is great! But how soon is “soon”?
@lhn I haven’t seen anyone talking much about the reverse potential of this. In theory I can take my followers with me using #activitypub . So as an Instagram user I can post to my followers on threads, then move my user to a new server and still post to them. Then I start boosting native fedi stuff to people on threads and pull them over. I am totally fine with coaxing my specialized community onto a server that caters to them, and my parents can stay on threads where they are comfortable.
@lhn never bet on a future promise. Odds are they roll back that idea and keep it closed off. I bet that was only going to be a backup plan if Threads didn't hit it off as much as they expected.
@lhn I have been overcome with the staleness of ideas on twitter, the cynicism of ppl who know they're being exploited but feel they're one Musk retweet away from gaming a system they've patronized too long to shrink away before extracting the audience they were promised.
@lhn although why you'd launch a platform that didn't seems a bit... Erm... Wierd?

@lhn This is the dream.
But there's no way Meta are going to let us escape its web.

They'll do something to ruin it.
