Currently there is a hashtag on Twitter related to the French riots that's calling on the expulsion of all Muslim, African, and Arab immigrants from the entirety of Europe. The trending hashtag (at #2) is filled with images encouraging mass killings and lynchings of Arabs. There is no come back from this.

To_Murse@heidykhlaaf I have been really horrified by the allowance of such bile. In the Anglosphere as well British, Indian and US accounts have jumped on it (to name a few countries) with absolutely no pushback. Melon Husk is a Nazi enabler.

Serhat Tutkal@heidykhlaaf Things have gotten worse with Musk, but they have been pretty bad long before him. I have an article about the images of mutilated dead bodies of #Kurdish guerrilla militants on #Twitter and the dehumanizing comments made to these photos in 2015. Most of these tweets still existed last time I checked, which was in 2023.

Now, it is actively malevolent.
@juergen_hubert @heidykhlaaf I would say that it was still malevolent in authoritarian countries like #Turkey and #India where Twitter was actively censoring and criminalizing the opposition (Facebook was also doing the same). They were using the excuse of legal obligations in these countries. Now, they do the same thing in all countries and without the excuse of legal obligations. I agree that it is a lot worse than how it was, but it has been particularly bad in Turkey for a long time.
@heidykhlaaf Also this, which suggests massive botfarms are pushing those topics. There's no other way they would use the *exact same* content.

I'm a lowkey afraid that some Twitter users that appeared here will bring some toxicity to this platform (but I don't know if mastodon has any similar issues in the first place, my impressions that so far it's much much better than Twitter in that regard).

Toxic users do slip through but given time will be removed from any well moderated instance (but during larger waves this can take longer).

And that was before Musk took over. I can't and don't want to imagine how it is now.
