Who's excited for Threads
@drewharwell
Data aggregators, identity thieves, and governments?

@drewharwell Christ…

(Good on Apple, though, for at least forcing them to disclose their skullduggery.)

@drewharwell So...pretty much if you give them your DNA at this point, they can completely replace you.
@drewharwell I just looked at the same for Instagram and it looks about the same.
@drewharwell Correction. Threads looks worse.
@drewharwell I'm guessing that my camera roll and my passwords are covered by "other data."
@drewharwell Pass. The hardest pass. Donner pass, circa 1846.
@drewharwell
Do they at least have latex gloves?
@drewharwell commercial social media: We ARE the product ☹️😡
@drewharwell living in California, it'd be interesting to see if/how they try to get my consent. Same with GDPR countries. They certainly can't do any of those cookies without my consent, even if the options are "accept and continue" or block
@drewharwell “what if we made Mastodon, but worse?”
@liederbach @drewharwell
This is targeted at instagram, facebook, reddit, twitter, ... users - do you really think better privacy makes mastodon better in the eyes of that target group?
@imsodin Seems like a good thing to show that alternatives exist and that this kind of data collection is not necessary. I bet lots of people are stuck using those platforms just because all the people they know are using it too, not because they don't care about privacy.
@krnlg Yes, agreed, I think the "where friends are" factor is definitely the biggest. And that's still instagram and co, not mastodon, though that's getting better. And to convince more people to get over here to improve that factor, privacy and independence from stupidity like we see at twitter is one possible argument, but from my experience not a deciding one (prob. convenience). There's even people that just roll eyes and shut completely off if I even mention privacy or openness.

@drewharwell

I haven't used Faceboom or Instagram in a looooong time. Can't trust Meta with your information.

@drewharwell @chetwisniewski Holy Crap, that looks like quite the data mining op
@drewharwell they should have to disclose the third party data purchases they make as well.
@drewharwell Threads isn't for me. But my hope is that it can strengthen the fediverse through the influx of new users, without destroying it. A tall order, I realize.
@drewharwell “Some guy who says he’s enforcing something called the GDPR is on Line 1.”
@drewharwell Can't say I'm excited or even interested about #Threads as a #Twitter alternative/replacement ... I don't think the solution to failures of one monolithic platform is to turn to another. Yes, there are benefits to having a single entity in control, but, as we've seen with the #Birdsite and even #reddit recently, there are far more pitfalls.
Of course my opinion, plus $5-7 USD will get you a cup of coffee at many coffee shops 😀; although $5-7 will do the same without my opinion too
@drewharwell Oh, HELL no. Zuckerberg can kiss my rosy red ass.
@drewharwell I’m excited. It’s not meant for the people already here. It’s meant for people who ate on Instagram and Twitter. I’m just excited for Twitter to go away.
@drewharwell AND it's a 243.2 MB download. Seems big.
@drewharwell what the hell do they need from health and fitness?
@drewharwell I'll check it out if someone makes a side loaded 3rd party app like Instander
@drewharwell excited like "when i imagine Shelob coming after me in an enclosed space" excited? Yes, I am.
@drewharwell Meh, Instagram already has our data anyway.
@drewharwell The sheep people won't care either way. It'll be the latest new "hotspot".
@drewharwell Still we are supposed to be afraid of #AI
It is like when the violent robber in the house worrying about an alien attack
@drewharwell yay another billionaire owned corporation that'll screw us over once a new CEO comes into the picture and acts like a fool 🙄
@drewharwell Is this better or worse than Twitter? Or Bluesky?
@drewharwell they already have all that information way before you even signup. It’s already been scrapped from other places and users.
@drewharwell I’m a bit excited about blocking it at least.
@drewharwell That’s gonna be a “no” from me dawg.

@drewharwell Threads??

Yeah that movie from 1984 was something else.....oh the app.

About the same.

@drewharwell OOOOH, awesome! Where do I sign, donate blood and send this kidney?

@drewharwell

That reminds me, I need to clean the lint screen.

@drewharwell
Facebook beeing Facebook.

@drewharwell that is such an amount of #DataCollection that this shit is a clear violation of #GDPR per design.

I hope @maxschrems of @noybeu sees this shit and hammers it away!

@drewharwell yeah... They too can go fuck themselves in Meta.
