Chronicling the fall of Reddit, in spite of all efforts to the contrary
Die Himmel in dir, wie kann ich sie wissen, kann sie seh'n? Wir tanzen im Fluge, wie Sterne, die ihrer Wege zieh'n.

I’ve been hangin out on BlueSky, and my experience there has reinforced my view that social media is best when it’s heavily curated to keep all sorts of hateful, violent extremists out of it.

Our inability to keep violent, sociopathic criminals off the Internet and out of the lives of their targets will be the major governance issue of the 21st century.

In my latest column for New Scientist, I talk about the emerging field of trust and safety, and why it's crucial to the future of our digital public sphere ... and yet is consistently overlooked or undervalued. You can read the article for free -- you just need to sign up for a free account. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2403999-trust-and-safety-the-most-important-tech-job-youve-never-heard-of/
Trust and safety – the most important tech job you’ve never heard of

Trust and safety teams at tech firms are all too easy to overlook, but the rise of propaganda and online harassment makes them vitally important, says Annalee Newitz

One of the objections I have to the iOS Mastodon stock app is that every time I open it, it takes >60 seconds to load the timeline.

Like just now I was staring at a 2-week-old reblog for a good minute before the app became functional.

Anyways.

It's #GlobalEncryptionDay!

Time to remind everyone that a backdoor "for the good guys only" is simply not possible.

By demanding encryption backdoors, politicians are not asking us to choose between security and privacy. They are asking us to choose no security. 👇

Global Encryption Day: Any backdoor would do more harm than good.

By demanding encryption backdoors, politicians are not asking us to choose between security and privacy. They are asking us to choose no security.

What COVID19 has taught us about the Zombie Apocalypse is that there will be zombie denialists, zombie virus infection parties, zombie conspiracy theorists, and politicians ruthlessly exploiting lies about zombies to kill off demographics who won't vote for them—and when a vaccine against Z-virus is invented there will be zombie anti-vaxxers (some of them funded by the Kremlin for shits and giggles).

And now, three months later, the situation is that they sunsetted Reddit Premium altogether and replaced it with a “tip the user, company takes a cut” system which they branded Reddit Gold.

All the finances are handled by Stripe and/or third party financial services vendors.

So All Of The Above appears to be correct, w/r/t the causes of the change.

Four panels? On my CrustaceanSingles? It may be more likely than you think! (I don't know how likely you think it is.) #comics
And it’s just 8 years too late to counter & prevent the GamerGate & /pol/ invasion of Reddit.

Today, Reddit finally delivered some improvements we’ve been asking for for five years, to how it handles moderated content.

Content directed to another user (comments) which are removed by a moderator (including AutoModerator) are removed from the user’s inbox.

As of last week, posts & comments held by AutoModerator don’t have notifications sent for them.

These mean that criminal harassers, violent terrorists, and bigots are squelched.
