Suggestion: Reach out to your local government, emergency service provider, and/or news org. Let them know that Twitter has ended public access to content and that Mastodon is a working alternative *today*. I did this on the weekend with my local emergency folks and this morning I got a reply back saying they had noticed the embedded Twitter feed on their webpage was broken.

They didn't realize Twitter had cut that service. Now, hopefully, they are considering their options including Mastodon.

@chris Great idea. I just added a support request at Vic Emergency, informing them that their tweets were no longer publicly visible, and urging them to set up an instance on the Fediverse.
Victorian peeps, consider doing the same:
https://support.emergency.vic.gov.au/hc/en-gb/requests/new

@stib @chris

I see quite a lot of recent tweets at https://twitter.com/vicemergency

are you not able to see them?

(regardless, they should still set up on Mastodon)

@coderbarry @stib @chris They're only available to people logged in to twitter, so they aren't visible on the site's webpages or to anyone outside twitter.
@chris Twitter now a past HISTORY!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
Heck. Reach out to your favourite band, artist, crafter, doctor's office, local school, museum, community service org, ... basically ANYone who had their twitter feed embedded in their web site. It'll all be busted.
@chris Personally I hope a number of storm chasers migrate. Valuable real time content! #abstorm
@RichardNairn absolutely. I am dying for more weather content for me and my @alberniweather alter ego to follow

@chris @mastodonmigration Amazing! Just one more thing โ€” did you have a reasonably good suggestion for a server to make to them?
@ckent @mastodonmigration I suggested mstdn.ca as an immediate join if they wanted to get up and running on a trusted, scaled, and well used server for Canadian content. I also suggested that they consider creating their own instance as a trusted and self controlled source and offered to help them investigate that.
@feditips @chris I am going to do this thing in the next few days I am. Thank you for this post.
@robini71 @feditips thank you for doing it!
@chris @feditips Sure thing absolutely. I donโ€™t know how successful I will be, but I will contact my township commissioner and those involved with media output in my township and see how far I get the worst that will happen is nothing.
@robini71 @feditips exactly. good luck!!
@chris @feditips True to my word the email has been composed and sent.
@robini71 @feditips We Never Doubted You! ๐Ÿ‘Š
@chris @feditips Awww that's sweet. Still I like to be a person of integrity. I chase details and follow through it's like breathing I can't help myself. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

@chris oh embeds are broken? Iโ€™m still seeing them in news articles; whatโ€™s the distinction?

If journalists get to keep on keeping on with twitter while emergency services cannot, I am going to be incandescent with rage.

@jason These particular embeds, are those who relay a feed of a specific account (usually through a HTML widget), not a specific tweet (which can also be inserted into a website/article using HTML).

I wouldn't be surprised if embedded tweets on websites eventually went the same way as what is occurring with the account feed widgets.

@jason it may be that the articles are using a screenshot rather than an embed of the timeline or post.
@chris this is a great reminder, thank you. I just reached out to Emergency Info BC, which I had followed previously on Twitter for local emergency info notifications. Will see if they respond!

The embed feeds that was ddos twitter ๐Ÿ˜‚ @chris

It's funny twitter was just ddos its self ๐Ÿ˜‚

@chris I did that to Highland Council in Scotland this morning. As I'm a councillor on there I hope it might carry some more weight ...
@chris @feditips
Just alerted my local weather spotter coordinator that the Boston NWS page has the same problem. I've been reminding him for months but I think it will take an NWS-wide decision to make it happen.
@JJKrawczyk @feditips you are probably right. big orgs like NWS will make a system wide change. I am going to be contacting a few large canadian government ministries to see if I can put a bug in their ear too.
@chris be nice to get environment Canada and it's hundreds of localized twitter feeds over here.
@chris unfortunately, it didnโ€™t work with NOAA
@ktaletsk Thanks for trying. Hopefully someone strikes gold at some point :)

@chris Although MN has been making headlines lately for getting progressive things done, every single one of my representatives from city council to federal has been dismissive of my friends, family, and my own urging to get off corporate platforms and onto the fediverse where they can control the platform themselves, or at least attach themselves to an instance that is more aligned with public communication.

Maybe itโ€™s time to do round four (or is it six?) of urging them.

@suquamish It is surprisingly hard to convince people that there is even a difference between corporate controlled social media and anything else. I think most people just don't want to even think about it that much. Good luck! It is worth doing.
@chris what do you think the prospects for this are @skinnylatte @cydharrell Iโ€™d really appreciate SF at least partially switching.

@chris Suggest you connect them to the system run by https://mstdn.ca/@cunningpike@govsocial.org

Itโ€™s designed to allow official groups create appropriate contacts within an environment geared towards governmental/NFP needs.

@chris
This is important, government agencies should have a reliable method to disseminate information
Even a broadcast only instance with comments would work
@chris Consider a centralized government service (e.g., paid by tax payers as part of infrastructure) where critical federal, state, and city/county emergency services have an official mechanism they can use exclusively for posting alerts. Discussion of alerts can be done off the service on any other social media service so no moderation issues. This would provide a noise-free, reliable resource (ala emergency radio broadcasts). For the US, maybe a USDS.gov project?

@chris

Do you know about this - an instance that caters to #EmergencyManagement #PublicSafety #HamRadio or #GMRS?

https://fediverse.krohsnest.com/@lckrohjr/110647648472384929

If they are looking for a Mastodon home, this might be a good place to start! โœ…

Chip Kroh (@[email protected])

If anyone is looking for an instance that caters to #EmergencyManagement #PublicSafety #HamRadio or #GMRS, fediverse.krohsnest.com is open. Registration needs approval, but if you list what agency you are with and what position you hold (for Emergency Management and Public Safety), or your callsign (For Ham Radio or GMRS), I'll get your registration approved as quickly as possible.

@chris Hey @Paulatics did you see this? Time for the feds to change.
@Bwacton @chris I had NOT seen this. What a mess.
@Paulatics @chris Hi Iโ€™ve Contacted the #City of Vernon but havenโ€™t heard back yet. We need a campaign here to get all three levels of #Canadian Governments to move off twitter.
