My first act as dictator will be an absolute unconditional ban on leaf blowers.
@timbray electric ones too?
@johnbaro @timbray only allowed if they’re below 30db.
@timbray a solid choice but may I counter suggest: car alarms.
@timbray
I love my electric leaf blower. Which I never use for blowing actual leaves. It's relatively quiet and does a good job of removing small debris from where it's not wanted. And I can use it in confined spaces without dying of carbon monoxide poisoning, which is a plus.
@timbray Leaf blowers are the tool of the devil. You have my vote.
@carlmalamud @timbray All leaf blowers, or ICE leaf blowers?
@virtuous_sloth @carlmalamud @timbray I like my battery powered leaf blower. And my battery powered weed whacker. Nothing like an hour of weed whacking to get off the stress of debugging code. And it does not make much noise...
@timbray Years ago, Palo Alto banned gas-powered leaf blowers. I saw some city gardeners working on the median landscape strip in a road. One of them had an electric leaf blower, plugged into a generator, that was tied to a skateboard, that was tied with a length of rope to his belt. I wanted to pull over and hire him as a software engineer.
@timbray no leaf blowers (or at least electric only) and abolition of the Park Board and you're a shoo-in I should think
@timbray it's coming in Seattle, albeit slowly and only for gas-powered ones: https://www.seattlemet.com/news-and-city-life/2022/09/seattle-leaf-blower-ban-city-council
Seattle's Leaf Blower Ban Can't Come Soon Enough

City council passed a resolution to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers for their electric counterparts over the next five years. It's long overdue.

@timbray
Nothing says “it’s your problem now” like a leaf blower.
@timbray
I like it. Raking is a darn good upper body workout.

@timbray

Will you please ban wind chimes too?

@timbray I feel your pain, but the switch to electric is helping big time, and the Ryobi Whisper series are actually significantly quieter than even other electric blowers. PROGRESS!
@timbray You mean gas powered leaf blowers... correct?
@timbray And leaves: all trees shall henceforth be recursive to inner nodes under penalty of uprooting.
@timbray What about battery electric leaf blowers? They don't make the godaweful noise that gas ones make.

@badtux @timbray

They still make the dust...

@timbray A close second for me would be "no modifying car exhausts"

@timbray

..so should I hold off on that leaf blower purchase ...

@timbray my first act as a leaf blower will be an absolute unconditional ban on dictators.
@timbray You’d better come to power quickly. Democratically-elected governments might beat you to it. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-gas-powered-leaf-blowers-ban-1.6894161
Toronto looking to ban gas-powered leaf blowers to reduce noise and air pollution | CBC News

The ban would include all two-stroke gas-powered engines found in a variety of yard care equipment, including some lawnmowers and chainsaws.

@timbray I agree about the gas powered leaf blowers. They’re loud and smell. But I have an electric one that is considerably quieter and powered by the solar on my home.

@timbray

Only if I can't get there first.

@timbray @samerfarha but then how would I know when the neighbors lawn gets mowed
@timbray
I will guard you with my life, El Timissimo!
@timbray I really have to question my leftist credentials when I realize how quickly I would sign up for a totalitarian movement that banned leaf blowers.
@timbray YES!!! Especially, the gas-powered ones.
