I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

Then I’d recommend https://find.sciences.social and https://nathanlesage.github.io/academics-on-mastodon/ for finding & following academics. After that use https://followgraph.vercel.app to find common shares follows. Following lots of folks is key. I’m a sociology #phd student studying volunteering and altruism across groups.

My research is about finding out what #abortion implementation looks like after legalisation, mainly through the interactions between #feminist #activism and public #institutions at the #subnational level.

@solderandchaos I'm doing a PhD in classics! I'm working on ancient Roman comedy: I'm looking at the really low-status people who appear in one set of plays--specifically, enslaved people and sex workers--and examining how they interact socially with each other. Kinda like the Bechdel test, but for a different group of people, and what it says about how the Romans viewed those sorts of people having their own social lives & goals.

- learned how the sausage was made & how to make my own terrible sausage.
- retired after a few years of teaching others how to make their own foul sausage.
- discovered true happiness existed outside of the factory. now an independent researcher and visual artist!

@solderandchaos I am currently pursuing a #phd while working full time, so I’m somewhat non traditional. My focus is on securing #scientificworkflows, #rse, and #hpc. I’m in the phase of the process where you decide to burn everything down and rebuild from the ashes of past civilizations. I guess there’s a lesson in that somewhere.

@solderandchaos The best advice I ever got was to treat the PhD as a series of hurdles, each one being a chapter of the thesis. People get caught up in the thesis as a reflection of their entire life and can't finish. Get the PhD done and then spend the rest of your life doing all those chapter ideas you had to cut out.

@solderandchaos I can't offer a PhD since i am only doing my masters degree (Biodiversity), but i'd recommend the chaos.social instance for you. There are lots of people from the chaos computer club, an association of hackers from germany. Lots of them do IT, but there are a bunch of other scientists and nerds as well. Maybe check those people out? :)

@solderandchaos Hi, I’m doing a creative writing PhD at Exeter, based (loosely) around a biography project taking in loads of mid-century history and nuclear cultures / scientific activism stuff. My background is in computer science and veterinary medicine and I’m continuing in clinical practice two days a week (because I’m a masochist apparently?). Currently also dealing with lingering post-Covid fatigue.

@solderandchaos Hey! I'm doing my #PhD on #GameResearch.

We are still figuring out exactly what my work will be but it will be focused on exploring the design of #CooperativeGames. Right now we're trying to come up with a framework that conceptualizes the structure and patterns found in cooperative games. We hope it will inform designers and researchers in the future.

I'm still working on my first contribution as first author, but I'm very proud to have collaborated on a best paper on #CHI: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3544548.3580702 . This paper is focused on the experiences of blind players, so it is more on the topic of #Accessibility.

I'm actually looking for folks to follow in these areas as well :)

I am between programs attempting to find a good program for Cybersecurity PhDs that are less business-oriented and more academically oriented. I have tried 3 programs now and looking at maybe switching to Information Science to get more theory than practice.

I guess what I'm saying is: in addition to being a researcher and learner at that level, I would also like help in that if you find anyone!
