I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.

So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?

[edit: mine's about getting kids interested in data science at school]

Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?

@solderandchaos
I am doing a PhD in Math Education, looking in particular at collective learning in asynchronous online discussions in Higher Ed courses.

#PhD #PhDStudent #MathEd #eLearning

@solderandchaos Not currently doing a PhD (that was years ago) but I have plenty of PhD students & am always happy to help!
@solderandchaos Done one 1980s (psychology), hoping to do another (art) if I can squeak a 1st out of this painting degree. The first had no word limit and it's vast, the art one is likely to be much more circumscribed. I'm the sort that finds this fun!
@solderandchaos Id recommend getting a good app - Ice Cubes is free & Mona and Ivory are also excellent on iOS. Then I’d recommend https://find.sciences.social and https://nathanlesage.github.io/academics-on-mastodon/ for finding & following academics. After that use https://followgraph.vercel.app to find common shares follows. Following lots of folks is key. I’m a sociology #phd student studying volunteering and altruism across groups.

@solderandchaos Hi! I'm a PhD researcher! I'm an #AerospaceEngineer #Student at #CUBoulder building a #SolarPhysics instrument which will fly on a rocket next year!
@solderandchaos does finishing my #PhD 30 years ago count? Also my wife has just finished an EdD but she is not on Mastodon
@solderandchaos this is great! I want to encourage my peers to join in too. I'm wrapping up my first year, about to go on #fieldwork in southern #Argentina. My research is about finding out what #abortion implementation looks like after legalisation, mainly through the interactions between #feminist #activism and public #institutions at the #subnational level.
@solderandchaos just finished first year! Getting a PhD in computational neuroscience with work focused on using Machine Learning to understand substance abuse trends as well as understanding the general aspects of cognition from a #complexsystems perspective

@solderandchaos

Iirc there is a specific group of phd people who talk about PhD life and gripe and support each other. If I come across it again- I'll link it here.

@solderandchaos Hi there - I’m currently working on a #PhD at the university of Limerick #UL examining the factors that affect the transfer of workplace #e-learning #elearning
@solderandchaos remind them to search for and use #hashtags for their fields and interests.
@solderandchaos I'm in the home stretch of a PhD in communication studies. It covers the history of automation in broadcast radio and anti-automation sentiment in radio art.

@solderandchaos Hey, and welcome!

I'm slowly doing a literature PhD while also full-time staff in the "teaching & learning technology" part of my institution.

My research is about post-1945 North American literature and how authors depict / make meaning about informatics.

@solderandchaos i might be too old to count, but i did a phd in applied math several years ago and work as a data scientist. Welcome phd friends!
@solderandchaos I'm doing a PhD in classics! I'm working on ancient Roman comedy: I'm looking at the really low-status people who appear in one set of plays--specifically, enslaved people and sex workers--and examining how they interact socially with each other. Kinda like the Bechdel test, but for a different group of people, and what it says about how the Romans viewed those sorts of people having their own social lives & goals.
@solderandchaos a fellow #phd researcher here 👋 I'm in the early stages of my research about the (un)entanglement of guidance counselling (some might say career education) and more-than-human nature.
@solderandchaos History PhD-turned-software engineer/freelance writer here, and happy to talk about it too.
@solderandchaos @NikaShilobod I am performing the same service here as I was on twitter - welcome new PhDs!
@solderandchaos You can follow groups and hashtags as well as people's accounts. They can be good for finding more to follow.
@solderandchaos Hi! I defended my thesis last year and helped launch a national organization for early-career researchers this year. Happy to talk about both of these things (or anything else PhD-related, really)
@solderandchaos nice, I hope there could be some folks from scholar.social who can pitch in as well :D

Doing PhD in computational biology now, will probably defend in less than a year. I hate my life (sarcasm)

I am self-hosting Calckey and have done the same for Mastodon, not sure how much I can help but... I will do my best?
@solderandchaos boosted, many of the people who follow me on here have or are working on CS PhDs
@solderandchaos sure!
- ground through the gears of a ph.d in theoretical & cultural psychology.
- learned how the sausage was made & how to make my own terrible sausage.
- retired after a few years of teaching others how to make their own foul sausage.
- discovered true happiness existed outside of the factory. now an independent researcher and visual artist!
@solderandchaos ping...you just found one: expert decision making in complex systems over here
@solderandchaos another PhD here! Mine on Biotremology and vibroscapes. #biology 🌿
@solderandchaos might make sense to add the Science hashtag I think?
@solderandchaos hi! I'm heading into my third year of my phd. My research explores the history of automation in death data collection
@solderandchaos PhD student in Distributed Machine Learning Systems (mostly Distributed Systems), and I am new to all social media 😂 not just here
@solderandchaos currently doing a PhD in Computational Biology.
@solderandchaos I am currently pursuing a #phd while working full time, so I’m somewhat non traditional. My focus is on securing #scientificworkflows, #rse, and #hpc. I’m in the phase of the process where you decide to burn everything down and rebuild from the ashes of past civilizations. I guess there’s a lesson in that somewhere.
@solderandchaos I’m a first year phd doing some compiler work on Scala!

@solderandchaos I'm getting back in the game, starting a physics master's, but aiming to do a Ph.D eventually.

(I have a computer science background, and work at a research lab.)

@solderandchaos The best advice I ever got was to treat the PhD as a series of hurdles, each one being a chapter of the thesis. People get caught up in the thesis as a reflection of their entire life and can't finish. Get the PhD done and then spend the rest of your life doing all those chapter ideas you had to cut out.
@solderandchaos Yup, here's one. Already have my PhD though haha
@solderandchaos I can't offer a PhD since i am only doing my masters degree (Biodiversity), but i'd recommend the chaos.social instance for you. There are lots of people from the chaos computer club, an association of hackers from germany. Lots of them do IT, but there are a bunch of other scientists and nerds as well. Maybe check those people out? :)
@solderandchaos Hi, I’m doing a creative writing PhD at Exeter, based (loosely) around a biography project taking in loads of mid-century history and nuclear cultures / scientific activism stuff. My background is in computer science and veterinary medicine and I’m continuing in clinical practice two days a week (because I’m a masochist apparently?). Currently also dealing with lingering post-Covid fatigue.

@solderandchaos

Here.

I spent seven years as the Head of a PhD School (Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen). I've seen well-nigh every problem a PhD can have and I'm always ready to talk.

@solderandchaos
I'm not doing a PhD (only got as far as a MSc) but happy to boost your toot. Good luck!
@solderandchaos I did one on measurement in psychology a couple of years ago and love your initiative 🙏❤️
@solderandchaos @jules Hi, I start my PhD in psychology in three months and I’d love to connect with other people engaged in doing doctoral research. My topic is sexual relationships and sexual risk in people living with or recovering from “borderline personality disorder”.
@solderandchaos Hey! I'm doing my #PhD on #GameResearch.

We are still figuring out exactly what my work will be but it will be focused on exploring the design of
#CooperativeGames. Right now we're trying to come up with a framework that conceptualizes the structure and patterns found in cooperative games. We hope it will inform designers and researchers in the future.

I'm still working on my first contribution as first author, but I'm very proud to have collaborated on a best paper on
#CHI: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3544548.3580702 . This paper is focused on the experiences of blind players, so it is more on the topic of #Accessibility.

I'm actually looking for folks to follow in these areas as well :)
@solderandchaos Hi, I just completed a PhD last year on diagram sonification, conveying diagrams via sound so they are accessible to blind readers. I'm now slowly finding my way as a still very new researcher/developer.
@solderandchaos I just finished my PhD! In history! Don't know about the quality of my advice, though...
@solderandchaos I have a PhD in quantum optics and atomic physics, but this is not my science account, hahaha.
@solderandchaos I'm doing (struggling with) a #PhD thesis on audiovisual musicality and intermedial performance in music videos, looking at the work of #BTS as a case study.
@solderandchaos I'm not currently a student, but I'm hoping to start a Computer Science PhD sometime in the future
@solderandchaos suggestion: as you gather addresses of folks collect them in a spreadsheet formatted to be uploadable. Then as people join thry can follow them all in a couple of clicks/taps
@solderandchaos I recently finished (2 years ago now) a PhD in engineering (solid mechanics to be specific) and am pursuing a research career!

@solderandchaos

I am between programs attempting to find a good program for Cybersecurity PhDs that are less business-oriented and more academically oriented. I have tried 3 programs now and looking at maybe switching to Information Science to get more theory than practice.

I guess what I'm saying is: in addition to being a researcher and learner at that level, I would also like help in that if you find anyone!

@solderandchaos Calling all #PHD candidates, peeps! Please re-post.
@solderandchaos if they used twitter, they can find people they follow already on mastodon using https://fedifinder.glitch.me/

@solderandchaos @Yup_Its_Holly

I'm studying personal data sovereignty, extending on MEd research on birth certificates as a technology (link in my bio). I situate my work in Media Ecology.

Haven't made it to candidacy yet and am greatly delayed thanks to being #ActuallyDisabled and the increasingly unmanageable effects of extreme heat and toxic wildfire smoke on my health.

Still trying to make progress, though! 🙂

@solderandchaos I'm doing a PhD in Applied Linguistics at TU Dortmund remotely and by publication. Investigating vowel acquisition by Japanese learners of English through multimodal computer-assisted language learning.
@solderandchaos as a recent philosophy phd, its been tough convincing anyone from my cohort to join. Unfortunately, most academics will resist joining any social network until they start lurking because its where the discourse is at.
