I was promised a sci-fi future where robots would do all the menial tasks so that humans could focus on creating art and instead you assholes built robots to do the art so we all have to fight over the jobs doing menial tasks, good job.
@rodhilton ... and we apply for jobs by submitting our resumes into systems which ingest our resumes, and a robot mis-parses them into the wrong fields, so that we can then spend even more time correcting their errors.
@rodhilton @Litzz11 I have often tried to point out that this is not the altruistic Star Trek society promised by technology - it’s just optimizing capitalism making the wealthy richer and the rest of us increasingly homeless. Flying car my ass.
@JohnSullivan @rodhilton Jetpacks for the rich, nothing for the rest.
@JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 sounds like Star Wars, when is the empire forming?
@mrbadger42 @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 that implies there is one central authority controlling everyone without hesitation which I doubt 👀

@adamwarvergeben @mrbadger42 @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 they do control everything, through fear.

The largest armed forces in the history of mankind, greater that the 20 next forces combined, are their Death Star.

They can and do destroy whole nations with it.

@JohnSullivan
I recently had the realization that even if we invented replicators that could make food out of anything, people would still starve because some company would own all of them (and the patents) and charge exorbitant sums for the use.

It doesn't matter what we invent, people will suffer because certain people hoard resources—not because they are scarce but because they are needed, so if you MAKE them scarce people have no choice but to pay whatever you want.

@rodhilton @Litzz11

@SarahAnneDipity @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11

I think this was an episode of The Orville. 😁 It would 100% happen. They would be DRMed and licensed like crazy. Like prescription drugs.

@SarahAnneDipity @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11

Even with a replicator, you still have money, because there's only one San Francisco and everybody wants to live there. Even in Star Trek where you can go FTL and therefore live in all kinds of places you couldn't before, if you want to live in a specific place it wouldn't be free, there would be scarcity. 😀

@neutrino78x @SarahAnneDipity @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 I think you misspelled Norway (or possibly Canada) 😁
@SarahAnneDipity That's basically the idea behind the metaverse. Digital copies cost next to nothing, yet we create artificial scarcity and let you and everyone else re-live the idiotic grind of the real world in it just so some rich fucks can buy their 3rd yacht.
@SarahAnneDipity @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 Not necessarily true. We have good seat belts because the company that had them first, Swedish car maker Volvo, made the invention available for everyone without royalty. We have Wikipedia, free software and other inventions freely available because some people think of the greater good.
Good things happen, at least occasionally.
@kjetil_kilhavn
True. I haven't got a lot of hope, but sometimes things go right, and there are a lot of people trying to make the world better.

@JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 The flying cars are here too. They're targeting the same price per mile as Uber and Lyft, I don't know if you would consider Uber/Lyft for the wealthy, I would not.

This powered by batteries and we have a really clean grid here in California (company is based in Santa Cruz).

CEO says he is very confident he can start air taxi service in Los Angeles in 2024.

Joby: All-Electric Flight

@neutrino78x @rodhilton @Litzz11 My college town had a local taxi company driven out of business by a vast majority of young adopters of tech in transport. A ride home once cost 8$ increased to 15$. Availability decreased given drivers response to chasing demand algorithmically - rides became unavailable on weekdays with drivers commuting here negating practical utility. Once surge pricing was instituted that same ride home on a Saturday night became 32$. That’s half a shift’s pay @ min wage.

@JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11

Even #StarTrek knows society will swing that direction if we don't stop it.

We're right on track for the Bell Riots, and nearly on schedule! 😯👀

@5ciFiGirl @JohnSullivan @rodhilton @Litzz11 "Past Tense" was written 28 years ago, but it feels bracingly relevant. Nothing has changed.
@rodhilton All the gains of technology seem to just be increasing the wealth gap. It's depressing.
@buck @rodhilton Starting to look like “Manaa”, the #scifi dystopian novel by Marshall Brain https://marshallbrain.com/manna There are choices to make—stop feeding the giant corporate machine, start and sponsor the open source, freedom-first projects.
Manna – Table of Contents | MarshallBrain.com

@albertcardona @buck @rodhilton Ok, but at some point we'll also have to talk about collettive ownership of the means of production of wealth, for example a big political party that doesn't start consumers' cooperatives might as well not even exist
@buck @rodhilton Even worse because it was our tax dollars that paid for it.
@anubis2814 @rodhilton Yep.. Frustrating, disgusting, unfair -- just really really depressing

@rodhilton

Still you're free to do your art. Just wait till that right is not available anymore.

You see AI is build on what's already done. You can still do new things not in the AI database. That's some consolation.

@rodhilton Turned out bodies were harder. SMH.
@rodhilton At least the jobs of artists who can draw hands and teeth are safe!
@rodhilton The sad truth is that menial tasks are and always have been really really hard, and society has always wrongly devalued them.
@rodhilton the Jetsons promised to turn us into literal buttonpushers, but then again, they drastically overestimated the future importance of the sprocket manufacturing industry.
@rodhilton If the menial tasks paid a living wage, it would be mildly less awful. *mildly*
@rodhilton Ha! Even a _machine_ could have predicted that
@rodhilton A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies.
@rodhilton To be fair, we didn't know that artists would be so easily replaced with auto-complete

@rodhilton The robots will do both and they'll make us do gladiatorial combat before it's over with.

dibs on the halberd.

@rodhilton They like the robots but want to keep the capitalism.
@rodhilton
@jon
We're supposed to be designing and programming the next generation of robots while they clean up around us. Instead, they're doing it for each other while we clean up around them.

@rodhilton Maybe the idea that we have to be paid for a job is the problem.

Becky Chambers' Exodus Fleet works like that. And deals with problems very familiar for one like me who grew up in East Germany.

@rodhilton
Hey, those robots need maintenance and repair, you slacker! Grab a screwdriver and an oil can and get to it!
@rodhilton Puh-leaze, I was promised flying cars and the metric system. I'd be super happy with the latter!
@rodhilton And yet, there's still no swarm of quiet drones dusting my apartment.

so that humans could focus on creating art …and ‘do the things you love’!!

If the slogan is too good to be true, YSK from the ‘get go’ that it is ‘yet another’ tagline.

@rodhilton We are living the sci-fi dystopia that generations of authors warned us about, except set to super dumb

@rodhilton the menial task robots are here, too, man.

Robotic Chef - RoboKiosk® Cooking an Egg Sandwich

YouTube
@neutrino78x @rodhilton Jesus Christ people, cooking is a meaningful task not a menial one.
@rodhilton I appreciate the notion here, but the thing that's changing is how much it costs to generate digital images. There's plenty of room left for creating art for its own sake, for ourselves, for the pleasure of it. AI will always beat me at chess, but I play to get better for myself, to have fun, not to beat the AI.

@JesseSkinner That’s wonderful. Now, where’s my latte? What’s taking you so long serf? You’re robot overload demands their latte!!🥸

@rodhilton

@rodhilton yeah. Where’s my goddamn laundry-folding robot?
@rodhilton in the future robots will clean our sex dolls
@rodhilton I was promised flying cars
