I have two words to say to this radical Supreme Court: Term Limits

(Actually I have another two words to say to them, but I’ll keep them to myself.)

@georgetakei Democrats could have reformed #SCOTUS when they had the White House and both branches of Congress. They chose not to, and we're all paying the price.
@BruceMirken @georgetakei If I had a dollar for every time "Democrats could have acted to stop this," I'd have so many dollars I'd be voting Republican.
@BruceMirken filibuster. Until the Senate finally rids us of that, we're stuck.
@dpscifi Dems have the power to kill or change the rule, and do not need 60 votes to do it.
@BruceMirken Manchin and Sinema wouldn't go along, so Dems didn't have 51 votes to kill it.
@dpscifi This is exactly the sort of learned helplessness that will be the end of us. LBJ, for all his faults, would never have thrown up his hands and said, "We don't have the votes." He'd have cajoled and threatened till he had them. Biden and Schumer didn't even try.
@BruceMirken how do you know they didn't try?
@dpscifi Because they didn't even say anything in support of it. Biden continues to publicly expose expanding the court.
@georgetakei you at least still have freedom, for now, to speak your mind.
@georgetakei no. the answer is adding more justices.

@georgetakei @ewarrenfan

The answer is a new constitution convention. There are deep structural problems and band aide solutions aren’t going to cut it.

@petteriusa @georgetakei @ewarrenfan

I'll just point out that some fear a new constitutional convention due to how corporate interests will try to meddle with it.

Better to handle articles one-by-one.

@georgetakei @Hawkmoon @ewarrenfan

There is no easy way out of this. As unreal as it seems that any corporate interest would be allowed anywhere near something like this I fear you’re right. Ugh.

@petteriusa @georgetakei @ewarrenfan

The corporate interest won't be allowed near it, but their collection of congresspeople that they purchased will be all over it.

@georgetakei branderino could have expanded the court but chose not to
@georgetakei First word need to be added more. Turn limit for Congress. Why this is not a topic? I brought it up in the facebook of Senator of Il and nothing. Turn limit for president and should be forCongress. Nothing will change with the old blood that we have in there.
@georgetakei Direct action gets the goods. Voting isn't enough, it never will be. The French know what to do.
@georgetakei Regarding those other two words, you say them loudly when you say nothing at all (to paraphrase a pop song).
@georgetakei A couple of the elder conservatives appear to have an aversion to diet and exercise. Just gotta keep control of the White House a few more years.
@georgetakei Another two words? But guillotine is just one word. ;)

@georgetakei

A term limit of 10 years would be generous.

Thomas would've been out in 2002.

Even with 20 years, he'd have been out in 2012.

@georgetakei I worry about term limits when it takes only a handful of senators to block nominations until the sitting president's term ends. This court only happened because of senate shenanigans during Obama's last term.

I don't know what a good solution looks like. Probably something like "the supreme court may be the supreme law of the land, but its members are still subject to it, and shall be bound by the same rules of ethics that would apply to any court."

@mikemol @georgetakei the solution is to hold congress accountable for not doing their job. The issue isn't the supreme court, the issue is that both parties are relying on the court to reinterpret laws, when congress should be writing new legislation.
@georgetakei and expand the damned court! There are 12 circuits, there should be 12 USSC judges!
@darwinwoodka @georgetakei derp. Fair point. My mistake. There are 12 circuits plus appellate, my mistake.
@georgetakei So, I have to have their beliefs shoved down my throat and that’s protected, but I’m not afforded those same rights to not have their beliefs shoved down my throat. Also, only white privileged children can go to top tier schools. And, my kids need to drown in debt to achieve their dreams b/c fuck me for not being privileged. All decided by a group mostly bought and paid for with several actively taking bribes. I may need to rethink my stance on hexes.
@georgetakei I'll add two words of my own: "enforced ethics"
@georgetakei Hard disagree. We need to have respect for the amount of expertise and skill garnered in a lifetime appointment and how knowing the impacts of SCOTUS action very well can help.
Things we do need:
- SCOTUS code of conduct and a process for removing corrupt jurists
- An independent body that can be convened to check the power of the court
- A legislature willing to legislate human rights rather than waiting for the court to create them by ruling
@georgetakei FYI, any time I hear "term limits" I think of this article from 92:
https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1992-10-28-mn-1004-story.html
Secretive Group Is Major Supporter of Term Limits : Election: Organization, which has ties to Libertarian mov

More than 40% of the funds behind California's proposition to limit congressional terms is coming from a secretive group in Washington that has ties to major figures in the Libertarian movement.

Los Angeles Times
@georgetakei I think we're all saying those words
@georgetakei Are those two words 'Look, guillotine'?
@georgetakei 15/20 more years for Kavanaugh and Amy Barrett? Doesn't feel like it would solve anything.

@georgetakei Term limits are a band-aid on a bullet hole. We have a built-in system for dealing with corrupt judges, but unfortunately that system is controlled by another corrupt group that refuses to act because it would negatively impact them.

We have no more political or legal options under our current system. The only recourse is to completely change the system.

@georgetakei I use another two words all the time when I think about the SCOTUS.
@georgetakei Trump claimed to be a huge fan of term limits. I saw him do nothing about it.
@georgetakei One word: Impeachment.
Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh in particular.

@georgetakei no need to keep it to yourself, we're all thinking it.

Fuck you, SCOTUS.

@georgetakei Term Limits, but more Supreme Court Judges. 9 in not enough since there are more than nine Federal District Courts?
@georgetakei In honor of Alan Arkin's passing, I have three to them: Argo fuck yourselves
@georgetakei Exactly. They need to go.
@georgetakei Two words: Guy. Fawkes.
@georgetakei Time for DEMS.. others to PUNCH the BULLY.. vs. the .. whining.. do something dammit. and demand our reps to do something..COURT REFORM long overdue....
@georgetakei It won't happen for the same reason there aren't any term limits on congress persons.
@georgetakei Only two? I can think of at least a dozen words I am keeping to myself.
@georgetakei we need to make Supreme Court reform a major campaign issue for 2024. Congress needs to go back with a plan we can all get behind. Retroactive term limits is a start.

@georgetakei I have few words for Congress about SCOTUS:

EXPAND COURT TO 13!

That's all.

@georgetakei
πŸ₯₯ And I have 3 words George for the extreme righties on this #SupremeCourt: Lock them up. πŸ₯₯
@georgetakei does it rhyme with this song?
https://youtu.be/dEVcEE-HuIg
F**k You

YouTube
@georgetakei good luck convincing the democratic party leadership to back that idea
@georgetakei honestly I want the Supreme Court Abolished
@georgetakei I hear the other two words in my head! Is that you saying them? Oh my.
