Do y’all think about how the desert city of Dubai, which is hosting the next United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), has a huge indoor ski facility that has a lodge that uses gas heaters to keep guests warm?
@davidho How do they keep their beers cold in that lodge, I wonder. πŸ€”
@Kai @davidho Muslim country, no alcohol.
@Kai @davidho For the sake of the environment we should all keep our beers in our backpacks and drink them on the lifts. Also keep a Snickers in your snow pants pockets so it's frozen by the end of the day.
@davidho I thought the joke ended at "city of Dubai, which is hosting the next United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28)", and was still hoping that it's an Onion's headline. Booy, it got downhill from there.
@khobochka @davidho It also got cross country I'm sure.
@davidho It’s reminiscent of the old George Carlin routine, where humans built houses (warm box) to stay warm. Then invented refrigerators (cold box inside a warm box) to keep food from spoiling. Then put little warm compartments inside the refrigerators to keep the butter from being too hard. Warm box inside a cold box inside a warm box. Conclusion: Humans are absurd.
@davidho
so as long as they use "clean" "natural" gas im all for it..
@WoodSharpening @davidho Hopefully getting the "clean gas" from "clean coal"…

@davidho Dubai is a hellscape. Adam Something often critiques it in hilarious fashion, along with other urban planning, transport, techbro vaporware. This is the main Dubai one though.

@davidho built using slave labor, no doubt.

@davidho I have been tryign not to.
It was suggested to me yesterday that I should consider attending for some #Cryosphere outreach stuff this yea rin my capacity as #HorizonEurope project coordinator.

I would really rather not...

@davidho Well, wait til you hear about the climate-destroying industry that dominates that region...
@davidho Fossils at the helm. We’re through. πŸ†˜
@davidho it's all run thanks to outdoor PV panels
@davidho what a joke. Any chance prospective attendees could organise a mass boycott? How are you supposed to get the general public to take global warming seriously when they see the people supposedly tasked with preventing it flying to Dubai on private jets
@davidho best thing we could do for the planet is raze Dubai
@davidho that’s money well spent (insert eye roll)
@davidho just now a relative sent me this picture of a hotel she is staying in in #NewYork: outside it’s 30Β°C but inside the #AC is so cold that the fire is lit. Crazy times. #ClimateDiary

@pvonhellermannn @davidho

Criminal, is anyone complaining?

Whilst there are "Max Burn" folk like that hotelier we have little to no hope.

@pvonhellermannn It's basically the same idea on a small scale. So crazy.
@pvonhellermannn @davidho what a waste of precious energy! Have they heard of climate change?
@davidho I was a featured artist in a documentary made by the British Council for the last COP ! Ironically all about overconsumption!!!
Nine Earths.... is an environmental documentary that explores the relationship between everyday events and humanity’s excessive demand for the Earth’s resources. Blending participatory and observational types of documentary, Nine Earths features a mosaic of day-to-day life, using footage shot by collaborators from around the world. 🌎

@davidho COVID already showed the world how everyone is going to respond in any calamity so this is nothing more than lip service

@adriennelacava @davidho There is a mistake in the picture. One 's' too many.

(btw. I doubt that this plane exists)

@murks @davidho ya think it’s not real? where’s my sarcasm font??
@davidho I think more about the fact that someday the recoverable oil will be gone. It makes me wonder how the people of rich desert oil nations will cope when the money's not pouring in any more. Will they have lost the skills it took to live in that environment, even if it's many times worse due to climate change?
@davidho "Come to see where the sausage is made!"
@davidho gag! My town has been floating the idea of building one of these things too. An awful trend
@davidho Dubai is not a city, it's a joke.
@davidho Dubai disgusts me. People who got rich off of causing climate change have so much money they can defy climate change in extravagant ways.
@davidho Well, dammit, I do now..
@davidho can there be an alternative source ? such creative people I’m certain they will solve this. They have been funding experiments to solve the lack of water as in rain with promising results.
@davidho beautiful indoor snow resort impressive
@davidho
I file this under " our species is too stupid to survive".
@davidho I have been to Dubai 7 times and have visited this indoor ski facility. Always amazes me how businesses around the world manage to defy all the odds on the road to consumerism.

Climate Change Conferences are contradictions in terms if you think how much airlines fuel is used to carry delegates to and forth, the kind of food served, the amount of carbon fuel consumed in carrying the delegates to and from the hotel, and then this! They could have done all of their conversations about negotiations over videoconferences but they never do.
@davidho and I thought the full size ice rink inside the #Dubai Mall (which I have visited) was quite something...

@davidho

Every.
Damn.
Day.
😑

I find it criminal that no world leaders anywhere are calling for slashing energy use.
Even citizens only focus on calling to eat the rich, while continuing to waste energy left/right themselves.

Humans no longer deserve this planet. 🀷

@504DR @davidho
Just had this conversation (again) in my house.

How flexible/resilient will we all have to be for the inevitable changes coming?

#ClimateCrisis
#GlobalWarming

@equalitysiren @davidho

Very flexible. We will be facing unprecedented rates of changes and consequences, some known, most unknown at this time.
Being as self sufficient as possible is vital. Govts across the world already have abandoned their citizens, caring/catering only to the wealthy who have bought them off.
We are truly on our own.

Just being aware, and preparing as best as possible - you are way ahead of the majority of ppl.
Most don't want to acknowledge it, and most of those that do don't want to confront it/act on it.

I'm old, probably won't see the worst of what's to come. I'll still spend the rest of my days doing what I can to not add to the problem (like slashing my own energy consumption) and working where I can to clean up messes locally/supporting those that do so globally.

My only wish is that anything other than humans survive, heal and flourish again, but collective human greed/selfishness/ego are making that highly unlikely. πŸ’”

@504DR @davidho Wouldn't worry about it. Humans will be extinct soon enough. Leave it to the cockroaches and the rats.

@bytebro @davidho

As a collapse acceptance member, I don't worry.

I am dismayed that 1) we are destroying the only planet in the known universe that once was thriving/bountiful with biodiversity; and 2) ppl have this cavalier attitude about it, like - oh well, shit happens.
For something so easily preventable.

Collectively, humans really are the worst species ever to inhabit this 🌎.

@davidho In 2020, the UAE generated 91% of its electricity from natural gas, and 5% by burning oil. (Solar PV was 4%.) The water used to make that snow cane out of the gulf, via massive desalination plants powered directly by natural gas, and the snowmaking equipment is powered by grid electricity as above. (Sources: IEA, Wikipedia).
@davidho That's logical, according to their logic. 😑
