How’s iOS beta 2 on your main phones?

This is usually when I dive in.

Thanks for the "how's beta 2 on your main phone" responses, everyone.

Consensus seems to be:

- stability and compatibility are great
- battery life sucks
- some weird bugs here and there, especially with image decoding and keyboard positioning

@marcoarment Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm also dropping a lot of frames when scrolling.
@davemacdo @marcoarment Same here. SwiftUI FocusState is broken in ScrollViews, which seems like it may related to this and the keyboard issues.

@marcoarment seems like a great summary.

I’m currently running it on my primary device after running it on an older phone for the first beta. I was impressed with the first beta’s stability so I jumped in.

I refuse to risk my watch though.

@marcoarment Pretty much. Emphasis on crappy battery life and phone being hot essentially all the time.
@snazzyq @marcoarment My experience has been mostly the same on the minor bugs except for the battery life and heat have not been terrible for me and have been able to get buy mostly without any major lifestyle changes.
@marcoarment The new text selection handles (not sure what they’re officially called) are really wonky for me
@marcoarment I’m having great battery life on beta 2. As for the keyboard. Yeah, it’s acting a little crazy at times, but mostly usable.
@marcoarment mostly keyboard issues for me, battery is fine, some issues with stickers and new poster features but otherwise stable for daily driver
@marcoarment any one try Sonoma yet how is it?
@Noahtheboa @marcoarment beta 1 was horrible, beta 2 is perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro 16 M1.
@marcoarment Find My seems to ignore your saved locations so I get notified I left my luggage behind whenever I leave my house. Also, the mail app doesn’t update the unread badge unless you launch it
@marcoarment battery has been okay for me. weirdly i thought beta 1 was more stable!
@helvetica @marcoarment it definitely was for me. 2 has been buggier overall, especially the keyboard but also random other freezes/hiccups. Looking forward to beta 3
@helvetica @marcoarment In my experience beta 1 of the new OSes is almost always more stable than beta 2. Beta 1 they polish up in time for WWDC and take their time and freeze early. Beta 2 is a rushed reactionary release after beta 1 and often has regressions (e.g. the weird image rendering thing in beta 2 that wasn't in beta 1)

@marcoarment Apple Music seems to have issues in the car. Songs play in a crazy order. Instead of the next song in a playlist, it will play a previous song that isn’t even in the playlist and then just stop.

Maps also has been having trouble starting directions. Force quitting and trying again fixes it.

@marcoarment for the first time I regret installing the bets so early on my main phone. Cellular modem seems to crash when I’m out of the house every 90 mins. I’ll just loose mobile data until I toggle airplane mode…
@marcoarment 2FA codes text messages don't fill when tapping them in the bar above the keyboard. Even with the new feature that deletes these types of text messages turned off.
@marcoarment was late to respond but generally agree with this consensus.
@marcoarment live voicemail is still wonky. Had to turn it off until I test it on the next beta.
@marcoarment yeah, I would agree with that summary.
@marcoarment My iPhone 12 is also constantly red hot after like five minutes of use. A few times it’s refused to charge until it’s cooled down, but it’s gotten really hot BECAUSE it was charging. Hoping b3 lands very soon!
@marcoarment very few problems in B1 & B2 really so I'd say go for it!
@marcoarment A little buggier than beta 1, but still very useable.
@chase @marcoarment how do? Not noticing any new bugs
@The_3M @marcoarment I’ve run into some issues unlocking my phone. It’s only happened a few times, but never with beta 1. It’ll get kind of stuck unlocking and then unlocks to a completely blank Home Screen.
@marcoarment Pretty solid so far. there are some slight bugs every now and then. Beta 1 was generally solid as well IMO.
@marcoarment Pretty good. Kind of warms up the device (literally)

@marcoarment okay. The usual 3rd-party keyboard issues (SwiftKey) and maybe a couple of memory leaks, so I had to reboot once or twice through the week. Watchos 10 runs really well, I had only a small Airpods connection glitch. 30 hours of normal use on 44mm Series 8.

As you know, beta 3 usually brings regressions :)

@marcoarment no major issues so far for me. *salutes* Major Issues.
@marcoarment keyboard popup animation is a bit janky. Keyboard and new prediction in general is a bit janky. As I type this toot, trying to revise is tricky; the cursor bounces to the end of the sentence whilst I add something to the middle of the sentence I was working on.
@marcoarment Surprisingly stable. All apps seem to work fine.
@simonbs @marcoarment even my banking apps!
@samburkhard @simonbs @marcoarment same here: first time since ages I don’t need my backup phone for banking during the beta phase.
Zoom is crashing as of their new update from 3 days ago.
@marcoarment Most noticeable is a png transparency bug in safari and a few apps - just artifacts mostly. The battery life in beta 2 is much better than it was in the first.
@marcoarment A few little UI glitches here and there (apparently parts of Apple’s own apps haven’t heard of dark mode). Some weird keyboard opening behavior on Safari that actually fixed itself later somehow. But @overcastfm (plus the other apps I’ve tried) works great so far, and I think Autocorrect *is* actually better.

@marcoarment all apps seem to work ok, but overall it's so-so. The keyboard loves to disappear, Spotlight search only works about 50% of the time, and it keeps telling me I'm out of storage even though I have 30GB+ free.

Battery life is pretty bad, but battery life has always sucked on the iPhone 14 Pro imo

@marcoarment B2 is much better. You dodged the B1 bullet, at least.
@scottag @marcoarment what bullet other than battery? Which can be easily managed
@marcoarment So far no major problems for me personally, I think the only thing I notice on a day to day basis is some inconsistency with the keyboard appearing/disappearing properly, but it's better than in beta 1 and not frustrating enough that I wished I hadn't updated.

@marcoarment Occasionally the keyboard stops working for me in Spotlight.

I don't have to reboot, usually just need to close search and try again.

@marcoarment mostly ok but the keyboard gets a bit buggy at times. Bad framing or covers the text field, like in iMessage. Most times I’m able to navigate out and back in and it’s fixed.

The dictation works extremely well in my experience. It even does a good to great job adding punctuation for you, so you don’t have to say comma, period, etc

@marcoarment After I heard about the "no hangup button" in the beta I decided to wait...
@marcoarment I had some issues in messages in Beta 1. Mostly around the keyboard not showing up, but in Beta 2, Stickers and therefore gifs, aren’t working for me at all.

@marcoarment 0 issues.
Even security sensitive app updated fine.

Some keyboard issues in 3rd party apps.

@marcoarment Image decoding is really broken. I’ve noticed it most in web views, where alpha masks have hard edges and look like bad HDR, and other images have a magenta dot pattern overlaid that looks like a QR code (but isn’t). I’ve heard of others seeing this in other places in iOS.

@marcoarment I’ve noticed some offline maps hiccups during longer drives in no coverage regions where I already downloaded the map.

Pretty clean going otherwise.

@marcoarment Other than battery life it’s fine. I have a 14 Pro Max and on days I’m not using the StandBy feature at my desk I usually have to charge the phone up around 4 or 5pm.
@marcoarment my battery was hammered on my 13 so took it off
@marcoarment i was about to say it was woking fine on my phone and realized while trying to type that the keyboard is very buggy and every word is messed up if I don't type extremely slow
@marcoarment ok turns out it’s only having this issue within Radiant, the Mastodon client app I’m beta testing lol multiple betas don’t mix well 😅
