You don't have to use Mastodon through an app!

Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at https://kind.social

The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)

Be More Kind

Kind.Social is a Mastodon server with a broad community - queer, disabled, neurodivergent, crafters, techies, friends of all sorts. Our aim is to foster a genuinely enjoyable shared social experience.

@feditips I only moved to an app (Ice Cubes) because logging in at my server does not make it easy to quickly find the latest posts - Ice Cubes has that as a feature. If I have not been near Mastodon for a day I don't want to scroll through hundreds of posts to catch up ... or is there a better solution that I am missing?

@Greenbirder

I'm not sure what you mean by latest posts?

Do you mean notifications, or your Home timeline, or something else?

@feditips ... When I last used the server to access Mastodon I would go to (say) "Home" and the post on top was/is more or less where I left off (5h ago, 1d ago etc) and I had to scroll and scroll to find current posts. I would like it to always be up to date ... or has it already been fixed and I am behind the curve again?

@Greenbirder

Home goes straight to the latest post for me?

@feditips
So it does - certainly didn't when last I was here. Thanks - Ice Cubes can go back in the freezer πŸ‘

@Greenbirder

The very next comment I got on this thread was saying they preferred apps because the Home timelines *didn't* jump to the top.

I guess this is why it's good to have a range of options!

@feditips @Greenbirder
Yeah I think that'd be good to pick up from where you were last up to - no pressure then to necessarily catch up on everything posted since you last checked, cos you can just pick up again from where you were up to.
@Greenbirder @feditips
I'd suggest using lists (something I'm going to look at today, now that my timeline is getting much more full).
@feditips this right here! I've only ever used the browser-based versions on desktop and mobile. I don't like apps in general, and keep as few on my phone as possible.
@feditips Indeed the web UI is pretty good! I default to @MonaApp though because it syncs where I left the timeline and I can just scroll upwards to see what's new. That has been my favorite timeline experience ever.
@feditips but almost always native > webapp
@feditips I can't use it because often it doesn't really remember my timeline position if I tap on a post to read other comments and then go back. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
@sklc @feditips
Odd. It works for me. Are you clicking on the right back button?
@SmartmanApps @feditips I'm talking about using it on my phone as a PWA, and using the back gesture on Android specifically.
@sklc @feditips
Ah ok. I thought you meant it wasn't working on the web version.
@SmartmanApps @feditips It also behaves very odd when you've scrolled down a lot and go back. The way it "reloads" and scrolls back to your position is very disorienting.
@SmartmanApps @feditips To be fair, I can't replicate it not remembering the position now so it might have been fixed because I used it a while ago.
@sklc @feditips
I actually find it (Mastodon web) much more stable than same thing on Twitter. Over there if you don't scroll for a while you get "load more", sometimes multiple times, but here all the posts just load up, no dramas. πŸ™‚
@feditips I moved from the official app to Tusky. Much better experience now on mobile.
@feditips or there are the excellent @elk web interfaces eg https://elk.zone
Elk

A nimble Mastodon web client

Elk
@feditips Website PWA is how I consume Mastodon every day.

@feditips

but…

people want to.
They want a user interface that makes sense to them and their device.

People running to the fediverse from Reddit diaspora don’t the want the Fediverse manual of style as is, they want Reddit. Usenet styled Categories, up votes

Just as IPhone users chose Apollo over Reddits App. Presentation, framework and UI is important.

@feditips Laptop gets updated once a month. Since retirement, I quit using the computer. Use my phone. I know that the computer is much better for many reasons. I’ve worked with computers since 1993. I’m done. My laptop is my back up. πŸ‘πŸΌ Good advice. πŸ†

@feditips I won’t call the web interface excellent TBH.

Most of the apps though are some of the best in their class.

@feditips The truth is I think people get too carried away with apps, and they do cause a lot of problems.
@feditips nice tip, thanks. Haven't really tested it yet. Will do and decide which works better for me.
