Brilliant.

Twitter has suspended every single API key not belonging to a Twitter Blue subscriber.

Every. Single. Key. 9to5Mac’s? Dead. Apple’s for iMessage previews? Dead.

Every single API key has been revoked. The Twitter API is officially dead.

@TodayInTwitter I’m sure Apple is going to love that, and be extra eager to send more ad money in Twitter's direction.
@RGPphotog @TodayInTwitter or keep the Twitter app in the App Store.
@Ash_Crow @RGPphotog I don’t want to make it sound like I’m supporting Twitter here, but what rule have they broken to warrant removal from the App Store?

@EshuMarneedi @RGPphotog for the same reason Apple removed Tumblr from the app store in 2018? They had to remove all adult content to be allowed back.

Twitter has plenty of pictures of "female-presenting nipples".

@Ash_Crow @RGPphotog Apple has since added guideline 1.2 which protects user-generated content from these rules. As long as there’s a way not to see it (Twitter has a way for users to mark nudity), it’s allowed.

Also, Mastodon has “female-presenting nipples.” Shouldn’t Mastodon be removed from the store as well if we were to go off that? That rule never aged well.

@EshuMarneedi FYI you're doing a tremendously bad job of not sounding like you're supporting Twitter here

hth 👍

@shi …they didn’t break any rules. I can’t just say “BAN TWITTER FROM THE APP STORE!” for no reason. I don’t support Twitter’s decisions, I don’t support Twitter’s leader, I don’t want Twitter to make money. It’s run by a homophobic white supremacist Nazi sympathizer. But they didn’t break App Store rules and shouldn’t be removed from the App Store. Blindly thinking “I don’t like this person, so it should be banned” is narrow-minded.
@TodayInTwitter and let me guess, they are sticking to the place instead of leaving?
@oblomov @TodayInTwitter Exactly what I came here to say. Not enough people/groups have the guts to trust their community to move platforms, and instead cowardly stay on Twitter, feeding a machine that slowly works to destroy them - and everything else.

@martincrownover @oblomov @TodayInTwitter Interesting that you just assume everyone on Twitter is in a position to just up and leave. Is my wife a horrible person because she's still on Twitter because her job automatically posts her articles from the website she writes for to Twitter? And that she has to engage with users there because of her job? Is she just supposed to up and find a new job?

To quote Obi Wan Kenobi, only the Sith deal in absolutes.

@rvaweather @oblomov @TodayInTwitter I don't know your wife's situation, but you should really think about the questions you've posed.

Nobody *has* to be on Twitter. That's just silly.

If supporting Twitter as it transforms into another far-right shithole goes against your wife's values, she *should* advocate for change at her org or find a new job.

If she supports new Twitter/doesn't care about all the harm that platform can - and does - cause, well... yeah, she might be a horrible person.

@martincrownover @rvaweather @oblomov Staying on a social platform ≠ being a horrible person. What says you’re a horrible person is if you’re actively contributing to the hate. “Oh, you liked one tweet — you’re a Nazi!” is stupid thinking.

I say this as someone who runs an entire Mastodon dedicated to calling out the horribleness of Twitter’s leadership.

@EshuMarneedi @rvaweather @oblomov So you're saying that no matter how bad things get on Twitter, no matter how far right Musk manages to steer things, anyone contributing and legitimizing the site by being part of it is absolved as long as they aren't taking part in the "bad" part?

I'm sorry, but I can't agree with that.

Twitter is not so important that we can't make the choice to simply not be part of it.

@martincrownover @rvaweather @oblomov You're not harming anyone or advocating for the harm of people by using a website. That's an absurd claim.

@EshuMarneedi @rvaweather @oblomov So there is no line to cross, in your opinion.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I find that view very naive. There's literally no such thing as just "using a website".

By just "using a website", you are supporting it by making its ad model profitable. You are putting your honest, good-faith content next to harmful, bad-faith content, and lending it legitimacy and credibility.

@martincrownover @rvaweather @oblomov I think we both have fundamentally-different definitions of "horrible person."

@EshuMarneedi @rvaweather @oblomov Fair enough, I think you're right.

But I think the line between horrible and not is blurry. And there is (or was, or will be, depending on your ethics) a point where decent people will no longer want to be associated with Twitter.

For the same reason, I don't join and promote my art on Truth Social or Parler or other clusters of hate and bigotry. I wouldn't contribute to those aspects, of course, but... why have anything to do with them in the first place?

@martincrownover @oblomov @TodayInTwitter That is completely assinine. The problem is Musk and his lackeys at Twitter...the people AT Twitter, the people ALLOWING racist trolls to be on the site are the main problem here. For better or worse, Twitter became so engrained as a platform that trying to untangle from it isn't as clear cut and simple as you make it out to be. I'll concede that people who don't have jobs that involve a social media presence there can much more easily leave the site. I'll give you that.
@rvaweather @martincrownover @TodayInTwitter if your job depends on social media, and you have done nothing to establish a presence in the Fediverse already, even just one that is managed side by side with your Twitter one, you have *chosen* to paint yourself in a corner concerning your dependency on Twitter. And the latter you start on it, the worse it will be. It may not have to be clean cut, but doing nothing about it is definitely the wrong path to take.
@oblomov @rvaweather @TodayInTwitter Totally agree. Twitter is not an inevitability. It is not permanent or necessary. Thinking this way is giving it more credit that it has ever earned, even before Musk, and ignores the history of transience of social media.
@martincrownover @oblomov @TodayInTwitter But another thing I want to bring up is, the people who are going to stay there are going to stay there no matter how much of a stink we make. So why make a stink? It just comes across as condescending and kind of "holier than thou". Why can't we just enjoy interacting with all those who HAVE come over here, rather than continuing to beat a dead horse so to speak? No one's ever been persuaded by being called names and belittled.

@rvaweather @oblomov @TodayInTwitter I'm here largely because I changed my mind and tried another platform, and I'm certainly not alone in that.

It's not belittling to point out to people that their actions are legitimizing hate and bigotry. People will change their minds.

I don't spend a lot of time talking about this stuff here - this is probabaly the most I've delved into it. But you should not treat Twitter as a permanent inevitability. It's not, and no social media ever will be.

@TodayInTwitter @eichkat3r not only the regular API, also the SSO Service has stopped working...

@schenklklopfer Checking - by twitter sso, I'm assuming you mean logging in to services with your Twitter account creds, correct?

CC @TodayInTwitter @eichkat3r

@TodayInTwitter cool, that will speed up their descent into irrelevance

@TodayInTwitter Remember the olden days when a large swath of the computing world thought electric car trump was a supergenius?

Good times, good times.

@TodayInTwitter We should let Twitter take its course. Eventually, it'll die off as people figure out what's really going on.
@TodayInTwitter Twitter died the day the API started to become a way to make money. I really don’t get it! The API is basic functionality, it’s how we talk with the service. If you remove it the service is gone. Bye Twitter.
@TodayInTwitter
Brilliant move 😁, we can only hope some companies finally get it.
@TodayInTwitter I wondered why Twitter previews have been breaking recently. 🙄 It'd be nice if those sites /accounts affected would migrate over to Fediverse-land, but sadly, I'm not holding my breath for that.
@kksteinbrenner @TodayInTwitter I personally would find it easier to move to the fediverse if I knew how to guess the correct hashtag for a topic. One thing I had used the bird site for was seeing what other people think about a topic. Another was making my thoughts findable by people interested in a topic.
@TodayInTwitter That's it. I want instructions on how to completely delete my Twitter account. Under no circumstances will I support the owner's companies and future generations of my family will be forbidden to do so in any way for 100 years. I will write it as an instruction in my last will and testament and there's nothing that can and will be said to change my stance on this. Fuck SpaceX and all of Musk's companies.
@TodayInTwitter I don't think this is true? My keys are working fine.
@TodayInTwitter Talk about using a hammer.

@TodayInTwitter @patrick_h_lauke Easy Chirp is still running. 🤷‍♂️ https://www.easychirp.com/
Easy Chirp: accessible web-based Twitter application

Easy Chirp is a web-based Twitter app with a simple interface. It is optimized for disabled users and works well with assistive technology such as screen readers. It also functions well with keyboard-only users, older browsers such as IE9, a lowband internet connection, and even no JavaScript.

@TodayInTwitter @asymco OTOH this morning Twitter previews are being expanded in Messages and Mastodon’s are not. Go figure.
@TodayInTwitter and with how s*** is going in the EU Twitter itself will soon be dead too
@TodayInTwitter OK I KNOW THIS ISN’T A SUPER BIG DEAL BUT HOW THE HELL DID SOMETHING I WROTE GET 400 FAVORITES ON THE INTERNET
@TodayInTwitter so now you have to pay $8 + whatever insane price the API is now. It's too bad, it's going to kill a lot of the nice twitter bots that had somehow survived thus far

@TodayInTwitter @dymaxion Every key? No, one small tool still hangs on against the big suspension. I am not a Blue subscriber and https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ still works.

(The API is still dead. Just some legacy keys they failed to kill.)

Fediverse accounts of your X/Twitter followings

@TodayInTwitter so that's why every single animal every day account died
@EmeraldFox yep that’s how I found out :(
@TodayInTwitter @pronoiac Got rid of my Twitter account a couple of months ago. I miss it, and some people who haven’t felt the need to migrate off, but it’s okay.
