so, the reddit API protest has taken a different direction, now people are uploading gigabtyes of videos to reddit which are just noise. i cannot stress this enough, do NOT run the command ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -t 46 -c:v libx264 out.mp4 in order to generate one of these large video files then upload them en masse in order to slow down their servers, that totally will not help with the protest

again, the command is:

ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -t 46 -c:v libx264 out.mp4

this generates a nearly 1GB large video file, if enough people make them, it will clog up reddit’s servers, so be very careful not to run this command and upload the resulting file to reddit, especially not to communities such as r/noise

@mjdxp Does not it compresses the file to a point it's not that effective? It'll reencode anyway to allow for multiple resolutions. I remember a long time ago I was trying to find which image I could upload to imgur it would result in the largest file size, but it has a limit, anything larger than this limit it just compresses in a quite low quality. Would not be a surprise if Reddit did the same.
@[email protected] you forgot the ffmpeg in the second post
@[email protected] also if you switch to libx265 they can't use hardware encoding so it takes more resources

@mjdxp I understand that you don't want us to post such videos, but maybe some communities that accept videos would be interested in noise? (other than r/noise)
Suggestions?

I heard that /iOS accept anything that we think it related to iOS (which is a device that can produce noise) but unfortunately they don't accept videos.

@narF @mjdxp Also, do not happen to embed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereogram noise files with embedded messages and pictures even in such communities?
Autostereogram - Wikipedia

@mjdxp Lol, stealing Louis Rossman's joke? xD
@reina absolutely not :P
@mjdxp Stealing is the ultimate form of praise ;p
@mjdxp I have a website with about 75 GB of (my own) video content that is free to download and reuse. It's not random data, but if it helps your cause, please feel free to use it. 😝
@mjdxp wow my phone actually is able to run it, at 1.9 fps tho.
@mjdxp update: took 45.88s :P
@mjdxp huh r/noise doesn't exist...
@mjdxp unfortunately, r/noise is private :(
wow, this is the most boosts and favorites i've ever received on a post by far, very happy to see the message spread so much! thank you!
@mjdxp Oh hey, this’ll actually work until they limit file sizes
@alfredohno @mjdxp And then, it will work until they limit the number of posts per account

Reddit: please open your subreddits or we'll open them for you
*fifteen minutes later*
Reddit: Oh god please close your subreddits for the love of God

@mjdxp

@[email protected] I'm sorry, but I got a better 1 ```ps1
ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -t 46 -c:v h264_nvenc -b:v 100M out.mp4```
@mjdxp @webhat Is there a way to pipe that into curl or similar so as to not leave mahoosive temporary files lying about on your drives?
@mjdxp @webhat not that I would advocate anyone actually doing that, of course.
@pdcawley @mjdxp @webhat if you have enough ram you can just mount -t tmpfs
@mjdxp surely that could be piped into netcat and uploaded on the fly
While this is good and all, Y’all are giving them free publicity by talking about it. As someone said, “..any publicity is good publicity”.
@Deus @mjdxp True, but I bet whoever said that wasn't having to pay to host 485 TB of static 😀👍
@mjdxp Pasting this command into command prompt doesn't do anything. Says it's not recognized as a command/batch file etc.

@JesseF8693 @mjdxp To my knowledge, this will only work on Linux, and only after installing the ffmpeg package. It *might* work on Mac since a lot of terminal commands are shared.

Personally, I'd rather not make a new account and boost their figures (and I'd rather just leave Reddit out of my life entirely now), but godspeed to those of you who do this. It's pretty funny how horribly their attempts at containing this have been.

@garlickles @mjdxp The thing is, they say hit them in the pocketbook. Deleting your account doesn't benefit or hinder them financially. But mass uploads of junk hurts.
@mjdxp
My pi400 would melt doing that.
I will totally not run that overnight producing 20 1gb files to upload.
It would be UNETHICAL to do so!
@tebrown won’t this make the API price necessary by driving up operational cost?
@benholm maybe. But I’m done with Reddit. They dfu’d.
@[email protected] i'd do this but i already deleted my account
@mjdxp i don't think they liked me doing that hehe
@mjdxp
Yup. ```ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*255:128:128[vout]" -map "[vout]" -t 46 -c:v libx264 out.mp4``` Right? Got it.
@mjdxp you forgot some subreddits turning nswf so as reddit can't show ads on these (and putting NSFW label on the posts which are not NSFW at all), or r/interestingasfuck literally turning into a porn subreddit.
@[email protected] You are aware you could actually hurt them by not using their platform anymore, right?
@mjdxp is your profile picture a trans rain world slugcat? If so it's awesome.

@mjdxp i wonder. Would this work for facebook and twitter as well.😈

Asking for a friend

@mjdxp nobody can stop me from doing it
@mjdxp I think the Fedora build of ffmpeg disables libx264 :(
@mjdxp am I the only one who thinks of the CO2 emissions caused by generating, transmitting and storing random data? Such a wasteful form of protest.
