It is confirmed that Reddit is forcing subreddits to open again. This is according to /r/antiwork moderators.

#reddit #blackout #redditmigration

@vertana It's truly exhausting to see that all of these big social networks simply don't like people saying their decisions are stupid. It'll inevitably kill the platform. I just hope whatever fediverse technology they move to can scale accordingly.
@barasaint @vertana the biggest barrier is servers, right?
@havoc_alive One of them, yes, the other barrier is having it not be treated like reddit, where people abuse the report and block functions. I'm rather cynical about how redditors will adapt to other ecosystems. @vertana
@barasaint @havoc_alive Yeah, it’s thought to call any one specific thing “the biggest”. There’s a lot. Servers, software with a great UX, polished mobile clients, clear direction on where to get help (their mods or admins), and a few other quality of life things. They all add up.
@barasaint Agreed. An solid, polished mobile app is a must as well for stuff like Lemmy and Kbin.

@vertana I'm also skeptical (read: cynical and thinking very very poorly of them) about how redditors will adapt to distributed ecosystems. Several masto admins were very unhappy that people were reporting every single little thing instead of just blocking people.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if something similar happened with Lemmy and/or Kbin.

@barasaint yeah, that goes back to admins and moderators. If the population sticks, it will most likely lead to tighter federation circles I imagine.
Mbin - content aggregator and micro-blogging platform for the fediverse

content aggregator and micro-blogging platform for the fediverse

@melroy @barasaint @vertana

I've been giving #Lemmy a shot, and while it's not as active, it still has a bunch of great content.

Looks like my Reddit hiatus is starting, again, probably for good.

@gepandz @barasaint @vertana Which is a good thing.. I also removed my Twitter account in favor for Mastodon. And now Kbin in favor for Reddit. It feels good.

@vertana It is insanely ironic that #reddit is forcing r/antiwork to... work.

😂

@yoasif Over at /r/ModCoord they are complaining about exactly that. How much labor cost have they saved Reddit over the years? They’re daring them to replace old hat mods with new mods that only use the Reddit official tools lol.
@vertana @yoasif Idc if I’m sounding like a broken record, but why don’t the mods of each popular sub pick a fediverse platform, and link it to give users the choice to migrate?

@vertana I think the privated subs should switch to a r/pics strategy of malicious compliance. Keep the sub open but only post one stupid type of thing, such as sexy John Oliver pics. We the users want the subs to stay closed until spez backs down
@NicodemusB I think showerthoughts and a few others are using similar tactics so they can’t claim to be unmoderated.
@vertana I didn't realize I had seen peak zuck-style social media come and go. And good riddance.
@vertana I think Reddit boss has the same BRO bet as Elmo. But who is the guy on the other side ?
@vertana can't mods just nuke their subs?
@Beeks @vertana ... only to have them restored from backups?
@starlily @vertana ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I have no idea.
@Beeks @vertana That is literally what would happen to any of the larger subs, along with a lifetime ban of the mods.
@Beeks @vertana Part of the problem is that *you can't delete a subreddit*. There really is no "nuke their subs" that Reddit administration can't simply reverse.
seems like reddit is doing whatever the fuck they want now. forcing
subreddits to open and reinstating deleted content back onto the website.
they're really digging themselves their own grave arent they

@vertana seriously, what exactly do people expect from a commercial company driven by revenue?

I find it extremely naive that people think that they matter for those tech giants: they just don't. Nothing new, no surprises here.

That's one of the many reasons why the Fediverse, including #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, #Jemmy, #kbin ... need to be promoted as often as possible.

They don't offer exactly the same experience as their commercial counterparts, but they have every potential to get better.

@vertana @riaschissl ppl thought, correctly, that it was a win win relationship. Reddit have decided to kill the golden goose.
@vertana the fact that unpaid volunteers are acting with such professionalism while the actual company is being a little bitch is telling.
@vertana am curious who can delete a subreddit?
@stepheneb It used to be the original mod/subreddit founder. Now? It’s functionally Reddit admins. They can just bring your subreddit and mod list right back if they choose to do so.

@vertana Just manually deleted all my reddit posts and replies. Took about an hour. Interesting to see all the bits I had written flash by. More personal than using a tool to do it automatically. There was a great deal of kindness in what I wrote.

It was pretty funny to see that r/pics and r/gifs have decided that only pictures of John Oliver will be allowed.

r/gifs took a vote and the members voted 13,696 to -1,851 for this change! https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/14b6pz8/poll_decide_on_the_future_of_rgifs/

POLL: Decide on the future of /r/GIFs!

Hello, /r/GIFs subscribers! Boy, what a whacky time we've all had lately, huh? Reddit decided to kill off third-party applications, a protest got...

@vertana some will just close their subreddit: some already to go back to PhP BB forum...
@Vefhtagn I don’t have the link on me right now, but spez already said they’ll just resurrect and remake the mod team for any major sub that does that.

@vertana how? They will really hope that a moderation will magically reappear?

That someone will wish to do free work in a environment where there is as much toxicity from the "owner" of the social network??

@Vefhtagn Nobody publicly knows, but as Reddit still has more than 1500 employees, I think everybody is just assuming it’ll be some interns with minimal support and just told to “make it work”.
@vertana when you see how much they are efficient against hate speech, and misinformation... This will be a Train wreck...
@vertana It'd be great if mods offramped people to oldschool forums
