Question for people not from/living in the United States of America:
Do you have ice cream trucks in your country, and if so, do they play little jingles as they drive around? I need to know for research purposes. Thanks!

I feel like the whole Food Truck Industry really missed out on an opportunity when so many people were #WorkFromHome during the #pandemic.
Ice cream trucks, taco trucks, cheese steak trucks--I want an endless parade of food rollin' through my neighborhood.

@KydiaMusic

We have guys on bikes with fridges on the front that jingle their bike bells.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that doesn't really count though. 😅

@KydiaMusic Certainly in Aotearoa New Zealand. In fact, friends of ours own one of the trucks in Whanganui and we often see them out and about.
@KydiaMusic I’m from Canada and yes we do! Some trucks stay parked in the same spot, though, due to high foot traffic. (Like right next to certain museums that draw in huge crowds).

@KydiaMusic Australia yes. Typically they play Greensleeves.

I remember as a kid at the height of summer hearing it in the distance, waiting with 50¢ to buy gelato. That was some time ago now.

@KydiaMusic having said that, I haven't heard them recently in the last decades.
@KydiaMusic
The closest thing in vibe we had in Haifa was Palestinian guys in pickup trucks full of used furniture driving down the street shouting "old stuff" in Yiddish on the megaphone. They also had watermelons.

@KydiaMusic

Spotted here in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In winter!

And, yes, they play music.

@Davidtheeviloverlord @KydiaMusic

Yup! These guys!!!!

I wonder if they are a franchise? As all the trucks seem to look the same these days...

Often found next to playgrounds 😋

But they drive around the streets too. We live in a little lane in a little village and we hear the tune and the chick goes running out to get an ice cream fix 🍦

@KydiaMusic from Italy: I've never seen one. There are some moving kiosks that sell ice cream, but it's a small part of their offering and they cater to tourists exclusively, so the quality tends to be low (they don't play music, either). By and large eating ice cream for an Italian means going to an artisanal store.

@avibenavi @KydiaMusic

Are scoops everywhere in Europe so small? I've seen it in the handful of European countries I have been to, but I always remember my Polish wife trying to order 5 scoops at her first Baskin Robbins.

@imstilljeremy @KydiaMusic I'm not sure about Baskin Robbins (we don't have it here in Italy), but I think scoops tend to be on the bigger side here unless you end up in a tourist trap, which is sadly all too common. We don't really have big ice cream chains so most (non-touristy) shops are smaller and artisanal.
@KydiaMusic we in the U.K. certainly do. However they are in decline. They used come round in the streets, back in the day when home freezing wasn’t common. These days you see them sat on the edge of parks & attractions for the impulse buy. For a child of 70s they increasing have feelings of nostalgia 🍦🍦🍦
Ice-cream van melodies: the top ten from irritating to infuriating

ICE-CREAM vans are a great concept, bringing the cooling balm of a 99 to your very door. But why are their siren songs so shit?

@KydiaMusic Sweden definitely has. I think there are two different companies but one is definitely bigger than the other (and also has, or at least had, operations in the other Nordic countries). They play a jingle that is very recognisable (it is generally seen as having the non-stated lyric "we're tricking kids, we're tricking kids, with our melody" 🙂).

The jingle has similarities with an organ piece by Buxtehude but I'm not sure how intentional that is.

@KydiaMusic @Davidtheeviloverlord I can confirm that we do still have them here in the UK but they’re not as common as they used to be. 🫤
@KydiaMusic We have them in Australia. We used to call them “Mr. Whippy.” I don’t know if that’s still the case.
@KydiaMusic In Ontario, Canada there’s an ice cream truck that would travel across neighbourhoods in the summertime. It plays music as it drives.
@KydiaMusic Yes, and yes. Youtube apparently has British examples: https://m.youtube.com/@IceCreamVanGlory

Welcome to my channel, here I post random ice cream van videos!

@KydiaMusic Yes, the tune is Greensleeves.
@KydiaMusic What kind of research purposes? Are you planning to move to a different country? :P
We have them in the UK, maybe not as many as there used to be, but we still have one around our area.
