A "Pearl" in current issue of PLOS Pathogens, by Jaqueline Dudley

The good:

"... APOBECs induce mutations in both viral and host DNA, but it appears increasingly likely that RNA-containing viruses are mutated by cytidine deaminases. These mutations limit viral replication and transmission. APOBEC-mediated changes on host mRNAs in innate immune cells may provide additional short-term adaptations to inhibit viral infections."

APOBECs: Our fickle friends?

The bad:

"Nevertheless, these mechanisms yield viral selection. APOBEC expression in cancers leads to DNA damage and tumor cell death, yet allows for immune escape variants."

The verdict:

"Indeed, APOBECs are fickle friends."
