Hantavirus can persist in semen for years, but that doesn’t mean it remains contagious

Researchers know very little about how long the Andes version of the hantavirus can remain in human hosts

The virome refers to the vast, complex, and heterogeneous collection of all viruses that are found in or on an organism, or within a specific environmental ecosystem. To truly comprehend the sheer scale of this biological "dark matter," one must examine the staggering numerical reality of viral abundance.

Explore the virome: the vast collection of viruses shaping human immunity, driving evolution, and regulating Earth's biogeochemical ecosystems.

Why hantavirus takes so long to show symptoms and what that means for containment

People exposed to the Andes strain of the hantavirus may not develop symptoms for up to 42 days, a delay that makes tracing infections more difficult

High-frequency ultrasound (3-20 MHz) induces acoutic resonance in viruses with a spherical lipid envelope, rupturing the virus without affecting surrounding cells. This works on influenza A and COVID-19 viruses.

Ultrasound waves rupture COVID-19 and flu viruses without damaging cells

Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil have discovered that high-frequency ultrasound waves similar to those used in medical exams can eliminate viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 without damaging human cells. In an article published in Scientific Reports, they describe how the phenomenon, known as acoustic resonance, causes structural changes in viral particles until they rupture and become inactivated.
