Two good wire joining wrap techniques I found on Tumblr. One's the red set, one's the blue set, sorry they're interleaved it was a gif. But they're definitely going into my how-to-wrap-wire brain toolkit.

@moira @Binder These are cool. My fave connector is that new shrink tube that has a ring of solder in the middle. You slip it on one wire, twist your other wire any way you want, slide the tube to the middle, and hit it with a heat gun. Ugly but super rugged.
@scenario @Binder Oh yeah, I saw those somewhere like six months ago and have been using them where applicable a lot since. ^_^

@moira

The blue one looks like a Western Union splice.

When you just twist ends of a wire together, that's called a rat-tail joint.

@Kazinator Oh, it has a name! Neat ^_^

@moira

Hm. Not clear what the final step is for the red wires. If there's just a single bend in the left wire or the end is just getting snipped off, that looks like it would pull apart really easily under tension

@wrog @moira This is a fisherman’s knot dressed up in telco tech’s clothing.
@rmd1023 @wrog which one? the blue one is apparently also called a Western Union knot because they used it in telegraphy.
@wrog @moira Actually, I'm not sure - I learned to call basically any of the "take the ropes and tie knots around each other and pull taut" types as "fisherman's knots." Telegraphy makes sense as well, though, since you're going to have sustained (and expected) tension on the two lines as well. Speaking of knots, I dropped a bookmark for this into pinboard and it turns out the site's still good. @rmd1023 @wrog oh hey some of these ties are used in flutemaking :D

@wrog the end that sticks out gets bent over and back up, forming a very tall U and keeping the coil form sliding off.

In _my_ case what i actually intend to do is the red knot, then solder it because I'm like that, so it'll go nowhere ever. and the reason i'm caring about this is because i want my soldered-together connectors not to be lumpy. it bothers me. #picky
