Climate crisis dissonance. To the left, I see that the council has made vendors price their food according to its cost to the climate. To the right, I see the car company selling cars to people while telling them how to reduce their CO2 impact. Good thing my emotional rollercoaster doesn’t run on fossil fuel.

Climate crisis dissonance. The Prince and Princess of Denmark sailed by yacht from Copenhagen to Aarhus, a trip that takes 4 hours by train. They’re being driven around in a 9-car convoy for distances that take 5 minutes to walk.

Their yacht is docked below a UN Sustainable Development mural that should have been finished two days ago. But the artists are still painting it. The reason it wasn’t finished on time? The gable wall got too hot to paint on.

Climate crisis dissonance.

Pictured, left: a little blue sticker shaped like a tear-drop of water. Printed on it: a plea from the multinational hotel chain asking you, dear individual guest, to reuse your towel.

Pictured, right: a big fluffy white bath towel hanging on a big heated towel rack that is fully heated in July with no on/off switch that I can find. The towel is steaming hot.

Not pictured: the steam coming out of my ears.

@CiaraNi
I think drying the towel needs the heat more in a warm moist July than in the winter.

If the aircon is on, it's of course a mistake.

@notsoloud This was in Ireland, so not a warm moist July :-)
@CiaraNi Premier Inn?
@Valheru No, not Premier Inn. I don't think any one hotel chain is the sinner, I think they all do this kind of thing.

@CiaraNi

Also: a typical washing machine cycle uses 33-72 litres of water.

One beef burger takes 3,140 litres of water 😱

A plant based burger uses up to 95% less water.

So if the hotel restaurant served only #vegan plant based food they would make a far greater impact on saving the environment than this greenwashing performative nonsense.

#climate #climatechange

@shauny You are absolutely right
@shauny @CiaraNi

>One beef burger takes 3,140 litres of water 😱

no, it doesn't.
@CiaraNi these stickers are the biggest lie. Even if you put the towel back on the rack they will change it. But every hotel uses them until today
@mo They drive me bananas, it's such blatant greenwashing.

@CiaraNi
I saw similar #greenwashing BS at a hotel:

It said if you hang the provided notice on your door to say you didn't need your room cleaning, you could save the environment etc etc, and you would be awarded with a free drink or loyalty points.... however, you had to do this before a certain time of the day.

It can't possibly have been to save money by telling the contract cleaners how many workers were needed for the job for the next morning, surely???

@chewie That's why I wait until the last moment to say I don't need my room cleaned that day. I hope that means the actual person doing the work can skip a planned room, instead of a manager just subtracting a room from the overall schedule and adding other work for the cleaner instead.
@CiaraNi Rishi Sunak, the UK’s new PM has a reputation for this too! They are so out of touch!
@NEl Some of it's just baffling to me - it would be so simple to lead by example, to to walk five minutes in a country and a city literally designed for easy walking and biking. The car convoys weren't even for security - anyone can walk right up the yachts, it's all very open.
@CiaraNi Agree there - it shows true leadership!

@CiaraNi

In Denmark, we see no climate crisis. we see climate change as a business opportunity and we are on the forefront of it.
We adapt, we stimulate further growth.

@sebastian Adapting to the business opportunities in climate change - depressing to think about.
@CiaraNi
Come on, I really think we should focus on the real problems. I'll bet that Dannebro (as the yacht is named) can sail the trip Kbh. to Aarhus on the same amount of fuel as the average European person uses to fly on holiday.
@MrManor We can focus on many things at once. If we can only talk about ‘real’ problems, then we’ll all need to agree a list of what problems fit in that category. The yacht is named Dannebrog, like the flag, with a G. The toot focus was the dissonance: royal yacht under climate mural. I don’t think anyone should fly on holidays. Aside from fuel, the levels of consumption involved in private yacht with a full staff are higher than a charter holiday in Malaga. Also: leadership by example.
@CiaraNi you got me on the typo 🙂 But at least the The Queen did not go by private jet, like many other leaders and "influencers". And I still think that focusing on the fuel consumption of Dannebrog is irrelevant in the big picture.
@CiaraNi we're caught between alternate realities right now
@CiaraNi
Carbon pricing on food is a great idea! Plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are usually a lot more expensive than the originals, despite cheaper ingredients. IMHO all consumer products (especially giant SUVs & pickups!) should have a #CarbonTax. Also home sales (new & resale). Bet that would cut down on #McMansion developments! Maybe even add carbon tax to property taxes for all homes, since large homes cost more to heat/cool. And bring back tolls, but for carbon, on all highways.
@echanda All good and necessary initiatives. This was the first time I'd seen carbon-regulated food pricing anywhere. Fair play to the council.
@CiaraNi to be fair to Volvo it was only EVs but I also find it troubling how big they are. It's not something you want as a cyclist or pedestrian in traffic that's for sure!

@Ruth_Mottram @CiaraNi

Definitely would be (in a "big city" context) better to have advertised electric bikes instead.
And yeah, the move towards more heavy cars is troublesome I'd say.

Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly how to get people out of the cars.

@folfdk I’d be more convinced that they’re trying to effect actual change if they, for example, included two electric bikes with every car sale, to persuade even relentless drivers that they don’t need to use a car for local journeys.
@Ruth_Mottram
@Ruth_Mottram Yes, they are so big! What irked me most was the ‘fun game’ based on your reducing carbon footprint. From a car company!
