Move over Eurovision, the true ranking of European nations is here: the cheese map of Europe!
@LilahTovMoon wow Ireland *crushing* the United Kingdom, crushing them beneath a massive cheesewheel
@nicole @LilahTovMoon

@echanda @nicole

David Attenborough, probably:

In the wake of Brexit, cheese supplies are at an all-time low. Here we see one wheel of cheese loosed among the British public who are willing to sacrifice life and limb for the increasingly rare luxury that used to be a staple.

@LilahTovMoon "We should be ashamed!" Economist & part time Prime Minister Liz (she tanks) Truss.
@Probertd8 That's the weirdest part of the map for me. Most countries have pretty similar consumption to similar countries. The Baltics are similar, Nordics are similar, the north-central countries are similar… and then the UK and Ireland are so different.
@LilahTovMoon Are we wearing the wrong trousers?
@LilahTovMoon @Probertd8 Greater proportion of lactose-intolerant or culturally cheese-shunning immigrants? More urban poverty? Impoverished social housing residents probably don't have money for cheese, especially now.

@echanda @Probertd8 Maybe? British demographics aren't that different from Irish demographics. As of 2011, white people were 87.2% of the UK's population and 94.2% of Ireland's population. Even if immigrant groups consumed zero cheese, it wouldn't explain Ireland consuming 3.4x more cheese per-capita.

Like, if all immigrants in the UK consumed zero cheese (including white non-Irish immigrants), it would mean that White British + White Irish folks ate 8kg per capita which would still put Ireland 2.8x ahead.

It's hard to overcome a 3.4x gap.

@LilahTovMoon @echanda Oh gosh you've gone all technical - firstly - you don't quite where your demographics come from?
Secondly Irish demographics - which Irish demographics?
Thirdly British - Is that full UK Inc N Ireland or what (you seen to use both) - not specified.
Fourthly Immigrant groups?

@Probertd8 @echanda

The specific numbers aren't that important. Whether it's 70%, 80%, 85%, or 87.2%, it's not possible to explain a 3.4x consumption gap with differences in immigration.

Even if 50% of the UK were lactose intolerant, it would mean that the other half would only be eating 13.2kg/year compared to 22.5kg. 71% of the UK population would have to be zero-cheese for the remaining 29% to eat 22.5kg/year.

I just grabbed the 2011 UK census numbers and 2011 Irish numbers (the country, not the island) from Wikipedia. It is full UK. But the specifics aren't that important. The UK has marginally more non-white folks, but the gap is many times too large to be explained by that.

@LilahTovMoon @echanda I was just cheesing it - to use a PG Woodhouse phrase.
Tho I don't like figures without a source - Big fan of More Or Less you see.*

*See Radio4 More Or Less.

@LilahTovMoon @Probertd8
That's why I also suggested poverty: I suspect UK has greater income inequality than Ireland, which would also fit the pattern seen in Europe, with Russia, Moldova, and Serbia consuming even less.

@Probertd8 @LilahTovMoon @echanda

Breaking news:

Britain and Ireland are, in fact, different places. [1]

- - - - -

[1] Not limited to cheese.

@LilahTovMoon There was I wondering why there was a trans flag on the map, and then I saw that it was actually the Russian flag on top of the Serbian flag.

I have a feeling that might deeply upset some people in those countries.

What a shame 😂

@LilahTovMoon

That map must be incorrect at some data.
I myself making up 100% of Germany's cheese consumption!? No way...😏

@TheAuthorVivian 1.7 billion kilograms per year? That's even more than I eat!

🧀 🧀 🧀

@LilahTovMoon wow, the UK's cheese imports really are a disgrace.
@LilahTovMoon
Wow, the US is some where around 18kg to 19kg per capita - we're not number one for a food consumption ranking!
I'm honestly surprised!
Go Estonia, Ireland, Finland & Lithuania!
@Kalshann @LilahTovMoon
But US is probably number one in "cheez" consumption?
@echanda @LilahTovMoon
[shudders] Ugggh, that's probably true. lol
@LilahTovMoon The wealthiest, happiest & best educated nations eat more cheese than poorer, more aggressive Dimwit states.
Food for thought?

@j_g_fitzgerald @LilahTovMoon
It's hard to be angry when you have a belly full of cheese, Gromit!
@LilahTovMoon me @ my fellow brits: Ah, lads, we've really got to get it together.
@RubyJones My first reaction to this map was, "have things really gotten that bad in the UK?"

@LilahTovMoon bahaha - yes, that would explain it!

My thiught was... but... the cheddar COMES from here!

@LilahTovMoon As a French resident, this shocks me beyond belief.
@Eetschrijver @LilahTovMoon That’s because the French eat sensibly. (or they compensate with fine wines and breads).
@bh913 @LilahTovMoon Well, French cheese is something to behold and to be had.
@Eetschrijver @LilahTovMoon Mais si. And only made better by pairing it with a fresh baguette and a good Vin de Table. Just saying you don’t need to overdo do it to enjoy it.
@LilahTovMoon you just reminded me I got cheese in the fridge that I’m going to eat right now!!

@DarylKiley 😋

What kind of cheese? I'm in a sharp cheddar mood right now.

@LilahTovMoon 🤤 for cheddar rn
It’s some Dutch cheese with herbs and garlic, not sure it qualifies as Gouda but it’s similar texture wise. Clearly not the best cheese but it fills my craving 😭
@DarylKiley All cheeses are beautiful!
@LilahTovMoon never heard something that beautiful 😳
@LilahTovMoon Genuinely devastated by how low the UK ranks on this list
@LilahTovMoon my one time in ireland led me to believe that everyone there eats at least two pub toasted specials per day so this doesnt surprise me
@LilahTovMoon frankly it's not very meaningful: what use is 20+ kg per capita per year if it's mostly cheddar?
@mawhrin I'll be in my corner, eating my weight in cheddar 😋
@LilahTovMoon tbf now that i'm back in poland i very much miss having a good quality cheddar in each grocery store. (it was easier to get proper polish quark cheese in dublin than to get mediocre mature cheddar in poland, unfortunately).
@LilahTovMoon I'm curious what the true value for northern ireland is, given the Ireland/UK disparity, and that this has clearly just bundled them in with the mainland UK.

@LionsPhil

FYI - "mainland UK" isn't a thing.

There's the island of "Great Britain"; and there's the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

@clickhere go stick the term into Google and try that one again
@LilahTovMoon I dunno if I could eat that much cheese in a year.
@LilahTovMoon this is by far the best argument for Brexit I’ve ever seen. The UK is quite literally not European (when it comes to cheese-eating). On the other hand there is absolutely nothing as British as Britain’s 700 cheeses (Cheshire, Lancashire, Wensleydale, Cheddar, Stilton, Caerphilly, Leicester, Shropshire, Y Fenni, Yarg…), which makes the UK more European than most. A bitter ongoing debate is inevitable.

@LilahTovMoon Am surprised quite how low we in UK are.

I do my best...

@candlesnuff @LilahTovMoon Right? Lord knows our household tries. I’m having a cheese sandwich for lunch this very day!
@LilahTovMoon Cheeses Mary and Joseph, look at Ireland!
@LilahTovMoon Would be interesting to see Wales without the UK...
Cheese consumption in Wales 2001-2018 | Statista

This statistic shows the total weight of cheese consumed per person per week in Wales from 2001 to 2018.

Statista
@JoDavies that seems to indicate around 5.5kg per annum in Wales?
@LilahTovMoon That's what i thought but wasn't sure if i'd missed something. am disappointed, tbh ;)
@LilahTovMoon Wow. We Brits do eat what I thought was a lot of cheese. But apparently we're lightweights! 👀
