Anyone got a good recommendation for a standing desk VESA mount, that's not a $250+ Ergotron LX Tall? The Amazon Basics Ergotron white label that I was planning to use is pretty great but needs to go up 6-9" more for proper positioning.
I remembered that I had some other VESA mounts with rather tall poles. Turns out the Amazon Basic mount fit right on that tall pole and now I'm all set. (Yes I still need to cable manage, center, etc…)
Just to answer all the questions.

I thought I was going to set things up differently and now I’ve got this thing which I don’t need and I’m sure will get stuck in a drawer for many years.

I had to rewatch the tear down and now I don’t feel quite as wasteful. Also I bought it for $100 on eBay which is at least not as bad as $160.

Two ARM CPUs Are Inside | Teardown of Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable (3 m)

@paul that cable is armed for performance
@paul if you bought it on eBay it might be worth at least making sure it works before it gets all dusty in a drawer someplace.
@paul I really need to read up on what the active cable chips even do. Are they just signal repeaters? Why would they be a full CPU if so?
@paul cheap cables on eBay to me signals they’re fake
@paul the first time I watched that teardown just blew my head off
@paul You could re-wire it and use to replace some lamp chord. So the lightning cable would be use to helping lighting the room/desk.
@paul So give it away or sell it, and you’ll immediately discover that you need it after all.
@paul Keep it in the box or in two years when you do need it you won't be able to find it. Speaking from experience.
@rgcottrell I have a dedicated Thunderbolt cable drawer.
@paul With how expensive that is, I'd be tempted to move my monitor further away from my computer just to need the use of it.
@paul ahh I got one of these which is now my couch USB-C charger plugged into the 96W power brick so it's basically my go-to-charge-anything-quickly cable 😄
@keir expensive charger cable.
@keir goddamn dude, that's so extra for a charging cable
@joshcalvetti @paul haha yeah. I originally got it because I was annoyed buying USB-C cables that supported (or rather didn't support) different things and never remember which was which so figured i'd get one of these which will just do everything. The power bricks from my old 16" MBP. On the upside, it’s actually one of my most used cables now so I'm getting my moneys worth out of it 😄
@joshcalvetti @paul basically whenever I need a USB-C cable now for anything more than charging it's the one I grab because I just know it'll support whatever i need it for!
@paul They’re great ‘known good for most things they can plug into’ cables to use for troubleshooting,
@paul Good thing that cable only costs like $500.
@gruber @paul Definitely check out monoprice or OWC!
@gruber as much as I hate the Apple tax I’ll say that the year down of that cable was pretty impressive and worthy of some premium.
@paul @gruber I still feel that it is a design flaw that there have to be chips in cables. They should be in the end point devices, no?
@paul @gruber it’s strange how niche these things still are. Thunderbolt is everywhere but nobody needs a long cable? I wonder how many of the optical ones Corning has sold, like ever. Single digit thousands? Perhaps if they added power delivery…
@karppinen power over fiber would be quite the thing :D
@janl yeah, but plenty of hybrid cables like that exist 🤓 My Samsung TV hooks up to its tuner box with one, does something like 40 Gbps over a 15-meter fiber optic cable that also carries all the power the TV needs (so 100-200W?)
@paul I literally am in the middle of swapping my old iMac for 2019 Mac Pro and need that length cable for my monitor. Computer just arrived home from office today.
@paul some day you’ll need to do target disc mode from an apple silicon mac and you’ll be glad you have it
@paul The Uplift desk is nice and sturdy? No wobbling from your experience?
@jaytorres I haven't really used it much, but don't notice anything like that.
@paul I just got the uplift yesterday so now I gotta ask - why you took the commercial? Seemed like it’s only relevant for <5ft folks?
@aviel just assumed that it was the sturdier of the two options. Didn't really pay much attention to it and price diff was pretty small.
@paul That makes sense actually 🤔 hope I didn’t make a mistake with mine, but so far it seems 🪨-solid
@paul And the Space Grey Apple Magic Trackpad 2...
@paul +1 on the Keychron Q11: I have it, too, and _really_ like it.
@paul Nice setup. I've got the slightly older 38WK version of that same monitor

@paul What is the giant power brick driving? The monitor?
@paul You like the off-center stand? It looks kind of neat imo.
@paul is that monitor 1440p, or 5k2k?
@paul there are “spacer” adapters for vesa mounts that give you more range on an existing mount. For example: https://vivo-us.com/products/stand-vad3
Height Adjustable VESA Adapter

@paul Did you bought the 38“ because of the 144hz?

I ask, because the 40“ with 5120 resolution costs here quite the same for more real estate.

@teqqy price, $6xx vs probably $1300+.
@paul you’re using the last mac mini intel (space grey models) as your main driver?
@Cyborg no it’s just one of the places I work at.
@paul How does macOS handle the 21:9 ratio / QHD monitor? Any weird scaling issues?
@paul What’s the advange of that 2-part keyboard?
@paul What’s cable management? For 20+ years now i’m trying to do that and I now think that all the peeps with the fiancé desktop setups never actually worked with them… 🤷‍♂️
