Something really interesting and potentially important is afoot in Colorado. Here 4 Kids is organizing a massive direct action asking the governor to sign an executive order banning guns, just straight out banning them. Reporting on the effort here: https://www.9news.com/article/news/special-reports/9news-originals/denver-moms-gun-reform-here-4-the-kids/73-32f040bd-c2e4-48a2-8780-25870f95cfa4 #Here4Kids #GunBan #GunViolence #GoodTrouble 1/
Whether this extended sit-in on the lawn of the Colorado State Capitol gets the governor to sign a ban on guns and whether such a ban could survive constitutional challenge is beside the point. What matters is the idea of massive direct action demanding a ban. This is the only way to ever shifting toward a serious reduction in guns and therefore gun violence in the U.S. 2/
We need electeds and candidates to appreciate that they must envision and bring about a drastic diminishment of guns in this country. Using the techniques of the African-American civil rights movement to bring this about makes absolute sense. 3/
Never underestimate how out there the demands to end Jim Crow and to actualize voting rights seemed in the 1940s, 1950s, and much of the 1960s. People thought the legal, political, and constitutional obstacles were insuperable. But they were not. 4/
We need a reinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment, one that makes clear that a right to bear arms is not necessarily a right to own guns or to own many of the types of guns most aggressively marketed in this country. It certainly isn’t a right to own guns without serious limitations. #GunControl #LawFedi #Here4Kids #GoodTrouble 5/
@heidilifeldman 2nd Amendment history: Until 1959, every law review article on the amendment concluded it didn't guarantee an individual right to a gun.
Law review pieces saying the opposite started to appear in the late 1970s, funded mainly by the NRA. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/nra-guns-second-amendment-106856
How the NRA Rewrote the Second Amendment

The Founders never intended to create an unregulated individual right to a gun. Today, millions believe they did. Here’s how it happened.
