Whether this extended sit-in on the lawn of the Colorado State Capitol gets the governor to sign a ban on guns and whether such a ban could survive constitutional challenge is beside the point. What matters is the idea of massive direct action demanding a ban. This is the only way to ever shifting toward a serious reduction in guns and therefore gun violence in the U.S. 2/
We need electeds and candidates to appreciate that they must envision and bring about a drastic diminishment of guns in this country. Using the techniques of the African-American civil rights movement to bring this about makes absolute sense. 3/
Never underestimate how out there the demands to end Jim Crow and to actualize voting rights seemed in the 1940s, 1950s, and much of the 1960s. People thought the legal, political, and constitutional obstacles were insuperable. But they were not. 4/
We need a reinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment, one that makes clear that a right to bear arms is not necessarily a right to own guns or to own many of the types of guns most aggressively marketed in this country. It is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution to interpret the 2nd Amendment in a way that converts the entire document into a suicide pact. The founders understood, as anybody else who takes the Constitution seriously does, that the Constitution is a plan for the preservation of life, liberty, and wellbeing. I suggest that if ownership of these weapons is allowed, the law should mandate they can only be stored and used at a professional range certified for the purpose. Movement to another certified range requires a chain of custody and law enforcement notification and the move can't be done by the owner. Seems easier to just ban them. I've actually known men with no-kidding stockpiles of guns. They're stupid men fantasizing about needing to kill.
𝐉𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫@heidilifeldman Anyone who's read 18th-century literature knows that "bear arms" was frequently -- and for all I know exclusively -- used to mean "be a member of the military." Out of that context, it's certainly a somewhat ambiguous phrase; I mean, hey, maybe it means "bear" in the sense of "tolerate unwillingly," as in "bear up under the strain." But that's silly, and interpreting it to mean "own as many of as you damn well please" is just exactly as silly.

SpicewallaThe NRA literally rewrote the 2A right underneath our noses by redefining "bear arms" from its original meaning of "carry arms in a military operation" to "carry arms for whatevers."
