If someone comes at you on here with “actually, Nazis were socialists,” just block them and don’t look back. Do yourself this little kindness.
@mcnees Ideally punch them first. But apart from that you are 100% correct
@mcnees as socialist as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is Democratic.
@mcnees Exactly! There’s no point in arguing with Nazis about the finer political points of Nazis.
@mcnees funny how those types always neglect the "national" part...

@dyckron @mcnees
Also the part where they were constantly grandiose, cynical liars (like their heirs in this century).

It can't matter what name the Nazis chose. They could have been called the democratic benevolent justice party, and they'd still be monsters who thought there were categories of people who didn't matter.

That's how we identify them today too, whatever they call themselves.

@petealexharris @dyckron @mcnees Bang on & side question when is your Glasgow writer's circle? Also can others join?
@sentient_water @dyckron @mcnees
The Glasgow writers group currently organised on Meetup is every other Thursday and anyone can join. The GSFWC is Tuesdays I think, bur I haven't been along to that for a while and I don't help organise it.
@petealexharris @dyckron @mcnees Thanks Pete. I visited Glasgow the other day & I would like any excuse to visit more often. I also need a friendly kick up the arse to get back into writing. Is there any online links to get in touch? Please & thanks.

All the meetings are still online using jitsi since the pandemic, so you won't need to be physically in Glasgow (we've had regulars from as far away as California before 😀)

@petealexharris @dyckron @mcnees I suppose I could visit a coffee shop in Glasgow & do it there. I drank the first decent coffee I've had in the UK for forever there recently.

I'll put it on my schedule. Thanks.

@sentient_water @petealexharris @dyckron Just the mention of a coffee shop in Glasgow got me thinking about the time in the mid-90s when I lived on the west end. I've been on google maps all morning trying to see which places I used to go to that are still around. (The answer is not a lot, though my old flat on Kelvinhaugh St still appears to be there!)
@mcnees I can never resist lobbing a "so why was the first purge they did aimed at socialists and leftists, and why were the first concentration camps built for communists?"
@mcnees
This! ☝️
The Nazis -official- party name was "National socialist German labor party, which basically was meant to appeal to everyone. That it had the word "socialist" in there somewhere didn't mean shit. It's literal populism.

@mcnees

A great idea indeed. Such stupitidy in combination with evil tendencies cannot be tolerated…

@mcnees

> Antisemitism is the socialism of fools

@mcnees My standard come back to this is, "And Jimmy Saville called himself a children's entertainer."
@mcnees that's like saying the DPRK is a free country
@mcnees I mean, Hitler had them all rounded up and murdered in the Night of the Ling Knives.
@mcnees technically, they had many, many Jewish business partners too 🤐
@mcnees
The white Nationalist are going unhinged because Joe Biden called them out for being unhinged.

@mcnees

>'If someone comes at you on here with “actually, Nazis were socialists,” just block them and don’t look back. Do yourself this little kindness.'

Making a statement like that, is like to say that time is invariant.

For anyone who's confused, the Nazis were brutal fascists who hated people for who they are and killed millions of people because of that.

I'm a curious person. I enjoy learning things. If someone made a statement like that, I would inquire as to what they're thinking was, what they thought the meaning of those words meant. I don't think I would immediately make any judgment at all about them until I understood what they thought those words meant.

We all live in these isolated bubbles these days and the meanings of words have become so tortured (especially ideological labels) that there are a lot people out there who don't share a common understand of what many words mean. To make a judgment about somebody based solely on that one statement would be like judging somebody based on appearances.

It would be like assuming that a minute is same amount of time for all observers.

I'm curious Robert, what prompted this?

@mcnees

And as to the meaning of the word "socialist", if you ask ten people you'll get twelve different answers.

@mcnees It's remarkable how successful the Nazis' intentional appropriation of the word 'Socialist' has been. So many people believe it. (Whereas nobody thinks East Germany was a democracy just because it called itself the German Democratic Republic. . . .)
@mcnees "They were called the National SOCIALIST party, it's literally in the name" yeah, and the Ministry of Truth only told the truth, it's literally in the name
(/s if it wasn't obvious)
@mcnees How many of these types are on mastodon?
@blinky81 well, the one I blocked. Idk how many more.
@mcnees
Nazis also drank water, so we should probably switch to liquid nitrogen.

@mcnees I had this once in the pub and I replied sardonically "yes, because everyone knows what made them evil was their approach to fiscal policy, not their othering of their fellow human beings."

Shut them down instantly. And I don't go to the pub with them anymore

Why stop there. Just round them up and send them to concentration camps. (sarcasm)

@mcnees

@mcnees funnily enough, they never seem to point out that Nazis were nationalists. Probably because that's actually true, I guess?

@mcnees

Agreed. Some tells are just too obvious. #ShrugAndBlock
