Okay, everybody tell us what your favorite file type is.
@anildash I have nostalgia for .sit files
@anildash anything with ansi art embedded in it.
@anildash .php because I will never forget my first heady steps into web development and what you could do without even needing a database or JS.
@anildash arj. from the 90s. because nobody remembers the compression wars :D
@anildash I faintly remember what an "arj" file is (I don't need to be told what it is, BTW).
@anildash .PCX from my early DOS Deluxe Paint days
@bcamper @anildash mine is .iff from the Amiga version 😊
@anildash Resource forks FTW.
@bwebster @anildash I came here to say .rsrc but .lisp and .fasta are pretty damn good too. .ace was ahead of its time too but there probably aren’t any other model organism database geeks here.
@anildash I’m going to go with JPEG. A dependable workhorse. Can get a bit messy at times, but is also capable of so much beauty and function.

@anildash hmm, I think I should’ve gone with mp3. But I guess JPG was what I thought of first so there’s that 🤣

Great question!

@exkclamation @anildash They're both the same concept applied to different things. I've even heard mp3 described as "jpeg for audio."
@JamesDBartlett3 @anildash I love that! I guess if nothing else I am consistent 🤣
@peterme @anildash But only with masking tape on the edges to make multi-file pockets
@peterme @anildash — and with an occasional browse on Mastodon, I found out the source of the covers of one of my favourite albums (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truant_(album))
Truant (album) - Wikipedia

@anildash *.backup I’m always happy to see them
@anildash The humble .jpg has been very good to me over the many years.
@anildash Another .txt fan here. Ha ha.
@anildash If everything else went away, HTML would still be amazing.
@anildash it would have been PDF except Adobe sux, so now it’s jpg bc I can see all the images in my preview pane
@anildash I like any file type that is secretly just a zip file
@anildash svg- you tellin me I can type a picture? Hell yeah

@anildash Does "those tiny zines you'd occasionally get included with a cassette tape" count as a file format here?

Thinking specifically of the little booklet with Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet tape, which totally blew my preteen mind.

csv

because I work with data, and I can write a script to convert it into anything...let alone pull it into a viz, which is when I fly.

@kristinHenry @anildash Kristin I can’t believe how many other file types I had to wade past until I found you here, giving the only *correct* answer.

My sentiments exactly, @secretgeek. Not sure why I had to do so much scrolling to get to .csv.

.csv is definitely my choice.

@anildash Text, because it’s the basis of so many formats. UTF-8, if I have to pick a specific text type.
