Just had a guy and his two kids in the shop, the oldest was 4 1/2, she told me so proudly ... She had a beautiful lavender cardigan on and matching socks ... I told her I loved that colour, we had a little chat about purple and all the purple things we have ... Then she asked me "are you a girl?" ... I looked at her dad and said can I let her know, he said yes

I crouched down to her level and said "that's a nice question you asked" ... and then said "I was born a boy, yuck, and for many reasons I always felt like a girl" ... Her eyes lit up, and I got a huge hugz and she whispered in my ear, "you're a girl"

I am more than likely the first trans person she has met, I made her feel comfortable and listened to ... one at a time ... Her dad thanked me for being kind.

Never dismiss a childs question, you might feel they are abrupt, they are not, they just want to know

First impression are important

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix And children don't have all the awful prejudices, so a good age to learn.
@grumpysmiffy no need to be sorry at all ... Children that age are pure

@melissabeartrix as a dad - I’d have been equally OK with this interaction, and appreciative of how you handled it.

Btw - I agree with the little girl here. You’re a girl.

Thanks for being awesome.

@Wrewdison oh ....blush ....thank you

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix I keep telling my daughters they can be whoever they want to be. I know they’re too young to understand - but I’m making sure early that they know I’ll love them no matter what.

@Wrewdison nice, that is all a child needs, love and support from their parent/s ... Well maybe a bit of food and water occasionally ... Giggle

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix yeah that's the thing. I'm always aware that I'm probably the first trans person that they've ever met. Which makes it kind of important on me to leave a good first impression. It's not just with kids. It's adults too

@denebeim so true ....we, as trans have to be our best, and compassionate to all and all the time ....we have a long journey to be respected and I am up to this challenge....hugz

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix that was beautiful. My daughter plays all age ladies soccer and said there's a trans player on another team (the sad thing is that emails were sent to all the leagues players in that division stating that there was a trans player...which I personally think this player should have some privacy and not be emailed about.
My daughter said there's nastiness about, nasty nastiness. But my daughter said that she is just a good player, it's not about her gender, she's a talented player.

@bestfootforward you have raised your daughter to be a wonderful lady ... Huge hugz

Hugz & xXx

@bestfootforward I just found my purple artliner ... Writing on your forehead... @melissabeartrix rules ... Giggles
@melissabeartrix That brought a tear to my eye. As a probably neurodiverse person, always curious, I can sometimes seem abrupt. What a lovely dad too.

@Susan60 hugz ... And yes he was sweet ... It made my day, well actually it put the icing on my cake ... I have had a beautiful day today ... Hugz ... Thank you

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix that is very sweet.

You handled it well.

I have always found it very difficult when children ask me "are you a boy or girl".

It's a perfectly rational and understandable question, but it's hard for me not to hear it as a challenge.

Probably because until relatively recently I didn't know that the answer I wanted to give, "neither", is just as rational, and that there are other people who feel that way too.

@Zumbador

Thank you ... Hugz

It can be confronting, and sometimes my mind is doing all kinds of flips and flops ... The thing to remember is to stay or give the impression of your calm, even if you are not ... It's not easy to do all the time.

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix
What a wonderful story.

"Kids just want to know" is a great moral to the story.

Sad that we live in a world where telling this simple truth is an issue. But keep telling (and sharing) the truth. It's the only way we'll all be free.

@TCatInReality

I know that the only reason I am out and about in this cis world ... I may get abused sometimes, but nothing compares to when things like this happen ... It's amazing what strength I gain from interaction like this ... And I am glad I still have my mum that brings me back to earth ... She normally tells me "just remember this feeling when you get hate next time" ... It helps so much.

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix
To me a hero is someone who puts themselves in harm's way to help others. That's you!
@TCatInReality now I have a few tears of joy rolling down my cheeks ... Thank you ... Curtsy
@melissabeartrix @Carrieinglasgow That’s so cute. 🥰 In a related spirit, this was served to me on Insta a couple days ago. ♥️ https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cqo3bETAXot/

That's beautiful ... Thank you for sharing

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix That's a nice one, I'm glad the Dad is open to allowing his childs honest questions to be answered in kind, and I'm glad you felt comfortable answering it. Maybe we can get to a point one day where gender diversity is so normalised that no-one bats an eyelid with kids liek this...

@andyayres truthfully I was not comfortable... I was like a duck ... Calm above the water and going insane below ... All I want to do is help show the world trans people are cool and just another person ... I do wish I didn't have to do this stuff ... But we have to, put ourselves out there and confront it face on ... Good or bad while hoping for the best ... Hugz & xXx

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix that actually makes me feel more like I could do this myself, I've struggled with social anxiety all my life but I have my moments! Well done on staying calm! ❤️
@andyayres

@Tattie @andyayres oh tattie, you can do any what you like ... Just remember that we all love you ... Fronting your fears and anxiety head on is what we all need to do ... Hugz

I have social anxiety too, as I have said many times I am like a duck, cool calm about the water, and below the water my feet are racing a million miles an hour ... And I try when the 'shit' is chucked at me to let it wash off ... Hugz

Just be your best

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix That is beautiful.
(How very considerate of you to ask the dad, and thank goodness he agreed.)

@nilsmielke

Thank you ... I was about 70% sure he would be ok with it, he did come into my workshop before to drop the job in without his kids, and it's kind of obvious that I'm trans ... And he brought his two kids in when he collected ... I was a bit nervous ... And just did it because it's what one should do ... Be kind, and compassionate

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix I just wish, you wouldn’t have to be nervous in a situation like that. Or any situation for that matter. But here we are.
@melissabeartrix That's a lovely story – and, what a smart kid.

@fishidwardrobe not only smart, adorable and sweet ... Hugz

Hugz & xXx

@melissabeartrix beautiful story, thank you 🥰
@melissabeartrix well, we need to enjoy their innocence while we can. This era is trying to kill that spark little by little. A cute movie about a bad mom here, another one of killer grandparents over there, books with step by step instructions on how to explore your sexual needs for 5 years old kids… video games with secret orgies rooms like Roblox and Mindcraft… 😔 with the only evil intention to destroy their beautiful soul. Selfish adults are taking over. We need to protect them.
@melissabeartrix Children are approximate adults and deserve approximately adult answers to their questions. Touching example of what happens when you work past all the nuance and detail and give her an answer she can understand. Genuine curiosity is beautiful and so are you.

@melissabeartrix

bawled like a lil baby at this story, it's just so NICE

thank you!

@melissabeartrix
I'm honestly tearing up right now. That is so heartwarming and sweet.
@RebelsHeart
@melissabeartrix Children accept everybody's difference. Then we spend years of elementary and highschool teaching prejudice. Then we have to unlearn the prejudice. School needs to be fixed.
@melissabeartrix @Nonya_Bidniss I’m tearing up. Lots of love to you.
@melissabeartrix
Cheers for you and cheers for the dad! 👏
