Stop saying Democrats have no plan on guns. Here’s the plan.

“Once again I ask Congress to send me a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Enacting universal background checks. Requiring safe storage. Ending immunity for gun manufacturers. I will sign it immediately.”

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Shooting in Allen, Texas | The White House

Eight Americans — including children — were killed yesterday in the latest act of gun violence to devastate our nation. Jill and I are praying for their families and for others critically injured, and we are grateful to the first responders who acted quickly and courageously to save lives.  Federal, state, and local law enforcement…

The White House

@JamesGleick Democrats don't have a plan that Republicans will accept. Thus, they have no viable plan, and won't have one until Republicans' power is reduced significantly.

But, given the Republican plan, the Democrats shouldn't have a plan that the Republicans will accept.

@JamesGleick the complaint is really that democrats have no plan on guns that can overcome GOP opposition in the House and Senate, as if the GOP’s refusal to even acknowledge guns as a problem is the Democrats’ fault.
@JamesGleick
If you want change, you have to make it personal.
Take it to the gun manufacturing execs.
Find out who they are.
Find out where they are.
If we are not safe because of their guns.
They should not be safe either.
Make it personal. Make it very, very personal.
@JamesGleick @suldrew so the reason this didn't happen any of the last few times they held a trifecta (which was as recently as last year) was...???
@JamesGleick @suldrew Like seriously, I understand the realpolitik reasons why neither Biden nor Obama want to seriously touch this. But don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. "Please let's now do this thing we did not actually do when we actually had the ability to do it" is not a plan of action.

@memory @suldrew “Trifecta”? You can’t be that naive. The Democrats have not have the power to enact these measures in the face of a Republican blockade.

They’ve said exactly what they want to do. Do you want that, too? Then figure out how to help them.

@JamesGleick @suldrew We held a filibuster-proof majority in 2009. Exactly which republicans prevented us from passing a gun control law at that time?
@memory @JamesGleick @suldrew It was a very weak trifecta. It was not strong enough to get past the filibuster, and not strong enough to get rid of the filibuster. The two D Senators who made sure the filibuster is still in place are…???

@jimluther @JamesGleick @suldrew 2020 was a weak trifecta. 2008 was anything but.

Again: sure, there are reasons it doesn't happen. But putting out a press release asking for congress to do something you're going to spend zero time whipping your own votes for, nevermind attempting to horse-trade the other side for is the opposite of a plan of acton.

@JamesGleick I fully support the efforts of President Biden’s Administration and the Democrats in Congress. But, we need to have some Qpublicans stand up and they won’t. They’re already blaming mental health- ina state that cut $117M in 2021 and $93M in 2022 from its mental health budget. Screw them and their hypocrisy. Vote Blue

@JamesGleick Democratic governors have signed significant gun safety legislation this year. Unfortunately, GOP governors in neighboring states have gone the other direction. No surprise then than red states have highest gun deaths per capita:

Gun Deaths Per Capita by State 2023 - Wisevoter

The gun death rate varies significantly across the United States. Mississippi has the highest rate of gun deaths per capita, with 28.6 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Louisiana and Wyoming. On the other hand, Hawaii has the lowest gun death rate, with only 3.4 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Massachusetts and New Jersey. […]

@JamesGleick

Thought we had a POTUS who cud work across both aisles 🤨🤪😤

@sdlizlifestyle We have a president who tries to work across the aisles and a Republican party committed to his failure at all costs, even if his failure means the country’s failure.

So who are you going to blame?

@JamesGleick

#Democrats for lying to the people

and

#Republicans for going FuLL- #Fascist

=

#USA 🇺🇸💀

@JamesGleick Sorry but that wasn't the Democrat's but the president. How many Democrats support this - all of them?

@MikeWaghorne Enough. There are many Democrats, and obviously there’s little they all agree on. But virtually all support these four simple measures, as do a majority of Americans, while virtually all Republicans oppose them.

Yes, it’s that simple.

@JamesGleick So the republicans have no balls…
@JamesGleick we stop gun violence by STOPPING legislators from gaining financially from the gun industry. As long as there is profits to be had--these GOP lawmakers will follow the money over the people. Every time.

@JamesGleick
performative nonsense. he absolutely knows no such bill will arrive on his desk, nor will he do anything to make it happen.

stop falling for disingenuous performative nonsense. the system is irretrievably broken and only revolution or collapse will dislodge the stranglehold oligarchs have over governments worldwide.

@JamesGleick So, in other words, no plan to stop mass murders? Maybe declaring domestic terrorists, terrorists would be a good start. The first step a murder takes is to decide to kill. The weapon is secondary.
@JamesGleick @PricklyPam , Question for you, who are anti-gun. What is an assault weapon? Answer me that. I know, but it is not my job to tell you. If you want to ban them, know what you’re banning. BTW, guns don’t kill people, people do. What you need, is stricter control on who can have them. What this whole anti-gun sentiment is telling me, is, if people start killing people with steak knives, you will want to ban those two. What a crock of shit.

@JamesGleick @yamainu The Democrats have no plan on guns.

If Biden had a plan, it would start with declaring a national emergency and then burying SCOTUS with executive orders.

But no. Joe is scared of his own shadow.
