My number one #Mastodon tip for people is to boost more!

Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

@matt My biggest complaint. Starting from scratch it is a bear to just explore and find people to follow. I wish there was just a feed of everything I could follow.

@danah @matt

You can follow any hashtag you want to. Following hashtags of things I am interested in has lead me to some great people with the same interests.

@danah @matt You mean like the federated timeline? It's a bit fast.
@matt You can say that twice! 👍
@matt I've started using something called https://calckey.social/ and it smoothed out discover process a bit, also UI sucks less.

@matt Thanks for the tip! Each social media platform has its own quirks to learn 🙃
@matt boost flooding can be annoying.
@Stefan_S_from_H It’s a good thing I didn’t tell people to do that 😉

@matt

____T H E___P R I O R I T Y____I S____S I M P L I C I T Y___

in order to successfully compete with Twitter, Mastodon needs to concentrate on simplicity

as little functions as possible

and if possible staying donations based instead of subscription

@MichaelRoth Sure? I’m not sure how this relates to telling people to boost more so cool stuff spreads more?

@matt

Well I meant in general

I guess most people are here because they disapprove of Elon Musk's (capitalist) style leadership of Twitter

One'd need a donation based alternative to Twitter

... but yes, also enough participants

There's just still too little to have the critical mass yet

Maybe

@matt I’m a Mastodon noob, but try to boost when it makes sense to do so.

For hashtags, I have a question. I don’t post much directly (I mostly just reply here and there) but when I post a sketch I’ve done (for example), I’m not sure what hashtag to use for it. Is there a resource or preference for hashtags on Mastodon?

@stanjames No reply? I'd suggest hashtags related to the content. If it's a manga drawing, hashtag sketch, hashtag manga, also hashtag the subject. If it's something that may offend or be NFW, you can CW -- put it behind a Content Warning which will hide the art until a viewer clicks to reveal.
@Matt Birchler Ah, so good, that we can block boosts :)
@jrp So annoying when people share what they like, I know 🙃😋
@matt I will say, most polls show people absolutely Clinging to their Home feeds. Try Explore. Try Federated. Step outside your box for 2 seconds. The rest of the world is Not hard to find.

@VaylLarkinPoet I’m sorry, what? I do look around there and step out of my box (for more than 2 seconds, if you can believe it!)

Thanks for the instant judgement, though!

@matt Um. My bad. That was the rhetorical "you". Should have been more clear. Since I started by agreeing with you though, maybe don't jump Straight to, "They must be a troll".

@VaylLarkinPoet I didn’t see the part where you agreed, so maybe we both jumped to conclusions a little 😛 Also, my mentions today on this are more toxic than anything I've ever seen here, so I'm not primed to assume the best 🙁

But totally, maybe people can afford to get a little more out of their comfort zone. I just think people should share the cool stuff they seem more often.

@matt Oh, I definitely agree! I boost tf out of everything I love, but I also want folks to know that even when you're pretty shy on the activity front, you can still take advantage of the structure to explore. Sorry, my first statement was meant to be affirmative. I'm autistic. It's not an excuse, but when I'm being incomprehensible at someone, giving them that information seems to be comforting in some fashion! It's not you, it's me, no, but really, according to tests and stuff! ;)
@matt and maybe someone did mention the @FediFollows account as well in the replies but I haven't seen it. It's an awesome account and website to find people to follow on the Fediverse.
@matt Microblogging is all about sharing relevant content and this definitely helps you find your target audience!
@MCjournalism Indeed! I’ve been blogging for like 15 years and have done tons of link posts, so I am fully on board with sharing what you love (and even the stuff you don’t, sometimes 😛).
@matt I found I started here and boosted like crazy. Then in retrospect I wonder how many might have unfollowed or muted me after that. Seemed like there was initially a lot of engagement and boosting. Then it just kinda cratered.
@jbwharris Yeah, as with all good things, one can overdo it. Most people I follow boost close no nothing, so I would love to see more stuff they’re enjoying 😁
@matt I recall feeling this almost panic, like I had a moral obligation to be the curation algorithm for others coming onto the platform.

@matt

Absolutely, as a friend of mine classic, #ABB!

#AlwaysBeBoosting*

*Only the stuff you find relevant, of course.

@matt I love these posts where the point is that "boosting is what gets the information around" and people hit "like" (5 so far on this). I'm guessing they're just trying to be funny?
@matt as part of the account creation process, Mastodon should ask you which hashtags you want to follow. Following hashtags helps with discovery.

@matt boosted ;)
Question: is boosting better than answering or staring?
@matt Agreed, but still, “Discovery sucks on Mastodon.” 🤷‍♂️

@matt
Another key #tip for increasing the visibility of your own posts is to use #hashtags that people are likely to follow (or have pinned in their clients).

#FediTips

@burndive That’s true. I’ll still take recommendations from people I know I like before I peek at a firehose of random people, but it’s something 🙂
@matt
Most hashtags I'm interested in are more of a trickle than a firehose, but in general it's better for everyone to use hashtags to mark the topics they are discussing, because that's also the only way to search.
@matt I think you have to stay active some time and check the people. Here are nice persons too! Just be active and wait.
@matt what are your thoughts on following hashtags & repost accounts? I thought those were going to be "the thing" but not sure anymore.
@matt
It just means that nobody is pushing posts at you. If you want to see them, follow the poster. If you don’t, then don’t follow them or who ever boosted it.

@mcnulla Correct, the people who follow you would probably like the things you like, so boosting stuff helps more people find the people you like.

Which isn’t me, apparently 😂

@matt Those who post need to remember how important hashtags are here -- the primary means of coordinated discovery! #mastodonmigration #newuser #advice
@matt agreed! Folks, don't be shy, don't be timid. Boost whatever you find interesting so that others can also find it.
@matt Then tip number 2 should be for people to mute more (which some might do now with me). Boosts are good for discovery. But one also discovers a lot of people that aren't your cup of tea. Keep them out of your feed by muting them.
@Chris Totally agreed. Mute folks who you don’t enjoy as much.
