"dear ChatGPT, my manager sent me a picture of his junk. i'm pretty sure that is a violation of company policy."

"i'm sorry, as a large language model, i cannot help you with this"

IBM plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI over time, pauses hiring certain positions

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna says he could see 30% of back-office functions replaced by AI over 5 years.

seriously though, what the fuck is somebody thinking when they say "HR can be replaced by AI"

@ariadne "ChatGPT, our health insurance is refusing to cover my gender affirming care. Help."

"I'm sorry, but as my training data cuts off in 2021 I have no evidence that trans people exist. Have you considered google?"

@ariadne Algorithmic firing. This way they can just blame the algorithm and no one will have to deliver the bad news.
@ariadne @XenoPhage
“And the stock dropped to zero, and the computer did that auto-layoff thing. We’re all unemployed!”
@ariadne AI might not actively try to humiliate people they don't like in front of every C-level they can drag in because the HR person couldn't read downthread to see forms filled out?

@ariadne There's an entire genre of Tech Bro who thinks any role other than coder is easily interchangeable at best, a waste of resources at worst.

It's the kind of Tech Bro who buys a company dependent on ads, fires all the people who handle the most valuable contracts, then starts panicking about cratering revenue.

@ariadne “my investors will love me if I say this 🤑” probably

all these things that people think ChatGPT can solve have had less complicated “AI” systems for a long time already, ChatGPT isn’t gonna solve this problem any better than existing HR chatbots (it’ll be worse, actually)

@ariadne “will my bonus for the cost optimisation strategy of the human resource department be enough for a nice cessna or do i need to fire more people?”
@ariadne Well, if we accept that HR is not here to help employees, it follows pretty naturally that a system that does nothing but complaint intake is a plausible, if less than ideal, implementation.
@ariadne “I have no idea what AI can do. Also, I do not value my HR team. Also, I’m totally cool with having my pants sued off by former staff who did not replace their lawyers with AI”
@ariadne at some point if so many jobs are automated then who will be left with disposable income? Or is that how the top 10% want it?

@ariadne AI is already terrible at judging hiring. That failure mode is well understood yet we keep investing in it.

And that's before thinking about any other difficult HR functions, finding people to hire is the easy one!

@ariadne on the other hand it's good to see confirmation of the role of hr in this and other corporations.
