So blocks have arrived on Bluesky... Quick turn around.

@mmasnick

Well dude many people didn't like showed up and was asking where they were so...

@mmasnick too bad quote toots didn’t show up on mastodon like that
@mmasnick are the block lists visible?? That’s what I heard..
@dinkyshop yes and no. because it's a protocol, they have to be accessible to the network. So the Bluesky app does not make them visible, but in theory someone could write an app to make them visible...
@mmasnick @dinkyshop Is the block algorithm / design published somewhere? I'm curious how blocking is published / synced across servers.
@mmasnick seems like the story about having to federate first might have been stretching the truth. They didn't prioritize blocks for whatever reason and then realized that was a mistake.
@chaos no. they launched a sandbox version of the federation first, and then implemented blocks.
@mmasnick do we know the ownership structure of blue sky?
@chaos @mmasnick I'd like to know that also.

@barryparr I would guess Twitter still has a stake in Bluesky. At the very least, something between Jack and Elon seems shady.

For example, how is Elon allowing invites to blue sky to go out on Twitter without backlash but he initially blocked all things to mastodon and substack?

@chaos @mmasnick it's a public benefit LLC as far as i know
@palecur my question was regarding equity distribution.
@chaos dorsey has a third or less of the outstanding shares but that's all i know
@mmasnick @chaos So they do have (sandboxed) instances now? Theory and protocols are fine, but without that, they were running in alpha.
@trashpanda_x @chaos yes, they have... details soon...
@mmasnick might have gotten a little anxious about App Store rules?
@sickmatter @mmasnick app stores require social media to have a block feature? Didn't know that.

@nhan @mmasnick apples rules:

To prevent abuse, apps with user-generated content or social networking services must include:A method for filtering objectionable material from being posted to the appA mechanism to report offensive content and timely responses to concernsThe ability to block abusive users from the service-Published contact information so users can easily reach you

Seems like Bluesky just barely implemented these features in time?

Edit: markdown swallowed sort of. See https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/ 1.2 user generated content.

@mmasnick
And also punishment for inviting bad people. From today if you invited someone who got banned or “actioned”, the BlueSky algorithm will exclude you from being Hot. Or if they invited you.
@negative12dollarbill the "hot" list is a janky temporary algorithm. It's literally "did this post get 8 likes." It's just a temporary thing.

@mmasnick Yeah real soon now there will be a marketplace of algorithms blah blah I won’t hold my breath

Hey do you know what “actioned” means?

@mmasnick Why support another platform owned by a billionaire? Is this different somehow? This guy has proven himself horrible too.

@SloanLA @mmasnick

This. It's disappointing, to say the least, that this project is drawing such attention.

@petteriusa @mmasnick I honestly haven't found much info on it and am not that interested to dig harder, so I’m genuinely curious when everyone says it is a Twitter clone.
@SloanLA i explained my thinking in detail in my post earlier today.
Six Months In: Thoughts On The Current Post-Twitter Diaspora Options

Today is six months since Elon took over Twitter and began this bizarre speedrun of the content moderation learning curve in which he seems to repeatedly… not learn a damn thing. Over and over agai…

@mmasnick

At least they listened to the users.

It will be interesting to see if there are server performance problems.

@mmasnick do they also have a concept of defederation in their federation plan
@msokolov @mmasnick lord, i hope not, defed drama is absolutely the most tedious shit about masto
@palecur @mmasnick I have no idea, maybe I'm privileged, but completely unaware of this drama
@msokolov @mmasnick wish that was me, the admin drama between instances on my feed is both significant and extremely petty

@mmasnick Cool. Glad they implemented that.

Still not remotely interested.

@mmasnick

Did they really not think to implement a block function? Haha, before Musk even took over Twitter, I had blocked over 1500 people. Instead of seeing dumb comments from trolls, I just blocked and reported and my experience was all the better. Part of free speech is the part where you don’t have to listen to people.

@RowinSpeez no. as i've explained like a dozen times already they DID "think" to implement a block function, but they couldn't implement the block function until the federation functionality was ready. the reason block came later was because they wanted to make sure it worked across federated instances, which is trickier than centralized.
