Ok after a year+ on mastodon.online I am about to migrate to Alaskan.social and I’m feeling strangely sentimental about this old account 🥹. I don’t want to lose my posts 🤨

also as one of the admins of Alaskan.social I think I’m now going to learn how much my admins at mastodon.online have been doing to keep that server functional and safe

can you change your user name without creating a different account?

I’m setting up a new account (very exciting) and forgot to use my usual user name…

Supreme Court rules in favor of Black Alabama voters in unexpected defense of Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court has issued a surprising ruling in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case, ordering the creation of a second district with a large Black population.

Because in a lot of ways we are & will be running on fumes, the fumes of our forests, of our old state apparatuses, and our will & ability to organize. But isn’t this when transformation truly occurs? When we get so tired (or fail so hard) one order ends and others begin?

I think what I mean by radical hope or optimism is the fierce love for one another that pulls us on when we get tired, yes, but it also means the joy and creativity and sense of imagination needed for designing what’s next! 4

Just a reminder to everyone tweeting about the Canadian wildfires that 3 years ago, Australia was in the grip of as bad, if not worse bushfires (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019–20_Australian_bushfire_season), and NOTHING has been done in the intervening years to actually reduce GHG emissions.

These aren't the "new normal", or "the first signs of climate change". This is climate change. This is our planet dying. This is 1°C warming.

My plan for cleaning the air in New York City is to strap Texas fossil fuel execs to the bottoms of helicopters and fly around until their lungs have absorbed most of the particulates.

It's what I call "Executive Filtration".

What feels like rock bottom politically and ecologically and culturally never is. It can and will get worse. And worse. Not everywhere all the time but in a lot of places, in unexpected ways, in uneven and unequal ways, we will sink and keep sinking.

and we will for the most part… just get used to it, we have to.

But to keep organizing, reorganizing, fighting, creating, we will need to radicalize our optimism to match the intensity of our descent…

It was so surreal to feel climate collapse and far right austerity politics converge all at once in one place and alter so many people’s lives. i kept trying to describe our new political reality to blue state friends on the phone but people didn’t seem to get how bad it was, how shocked I was about it, how scared I was about the future.

and then, life went on. we recalibrated to the new norms, got used to the losses, re-elected the governor. I bring this up cuz this is how it’s going to go… 2/

5 or so years ago alaskan forests were on fire and a split vote on the Dems side elected a worst case scenario GOP governor. while we choked on the fumes of our own trees, the gov took a blow torch to our budget, exploiting a provision that Alaska’s legislature can only override a gubernatorial veto of their budget with a 3/4 majority.

up in smoke went our state ferry system, entire university departments, many of our programs for vulnerable people. The only word for it was Alaskapocalypse 1/
