My cat always leaves the room when I start playing my guitar and I can't help but take that a little bit personally
@scalzi my cat stares at me like i'm some sort of noise monster
@scalzi Have you invited any of the Scamperbeasts to *join* your band?

@scalzi When my mum was playing her flute, her cat would sit outside the room and... well, it was either loud complaining or trying to sing along.

If the latter, she was always a semitone flat. (The cat, not my mum).

@scalzi install a speaker in every room. He’ll have to get used to your music. Cruel ?
@scalzi Maybe they appreciate it more with a little natural reverb.
@scalzi Knowing cats, it's probably personal. πŸ˜…
@scalzi my cat gets super pissed at me when I sing her silly songs. Like she tries to cut me.
@scalzi If you get enough more cats, then they'll act as sort of an ideal gas and some of them will always be in the room no matter what you're doing. Plus you'll have cats constantly bouncing off the walls, floor, ceiling, and you.
@scalzi
Obviously, it's the guitar. Probably need several more for testing. :)
@geoffduncan @scalzi Best answer! More guitars is always a good way to go.
@scalzi I had a wonderful cat back in the day who would always leave the room if she heard Sonic Youth. Only band she didn't like.

@scalzi
Mine too - it might be racial memory of what strings used to be made of?

Don't take it personally, even if the cat does.

@scalzi mine hides when I play trumpet. The uncultured feline.
@mwyman Let me just point out the degree of feline tolerance displayed by the absence of certain odiferous gifts in your instrument case when you’re done playing.
@cxarli The case usually doesn’t remain open. But he leaves odiferous gifts unprompted all over the house, and has since the kids were born.
@scalzi Big feels. Mine will tolerate guitar sometimes but I don't even need to start playing flute before she's up and out.
@scalzi We have a puppy who starts barking when I play, hopefully she’ll get used to it. Our older one doesn’t mind and sometimes puts her chin on my knee while playing, probably means she needs to go out.
@scalzi Kind of like my dogs when I start talking about crypto.
@scalzi Same. Except it's my ukulele, and my wife.

@scalzi My cat yells at me while I'm asleep, making me get up to feed it.

I have no sympathy when I wake them.

@scalzi one of my cats bites my ankles (or other nearest body part) whenever i sing.

i keep telling myself that she's just extra-sensitive to high-pitched tones-- and as someone with SPD and hyperacusis myself, i sympathize-- but i can't deny that my feelings are a bit hurt.

my singing is not terrible, i swear!

@scalzi But what if they came back with a set of drums?

Better or worse?

@scalzi probably a bitter reminder to them that fingerpicking will forever remain out of their grasp
@scalzi If they like what I'm working on, my dogs will push open the door to the room where I'm practicing ukulele and go to sleep in the doggy bed beside my chair. They pointedly leave if for some reason a piece doesn't meet their canine standards. I can't always guess what they'll like, but mellow music is clearly preferred.
@scalzi the true test. When you stop. Does the cat return?

@scalzi
Don't take it personally.

My sister's a wonderful singer. One of their local cats made friends with her; one day, while she was rehearsing, the cat put his paw up to her mouth. Repeatedly. She stopped after the third time, and waited until he was gone. πŸ™„

While I love cats, they have a very different attitude to music than we do.πŸ˜†

@scalzi They're not leaving because they're offended. They're leaving because they're so moved, and they worry that their show of emotion will stop you from playing on.
@scalzi Haha, it's totally personal! Cats! amirite?!? πŸ˜„ πŸ˜‰ 😸
@scalzi My 80-pound dog hides and shakes when I play the bass. The cats sit on the amp.
@scalzi my cats do the same when I play the didgeridoo. So odd. LOL
@scalzi My cat doesn't like Shostakovich, specifically. When I start playing (piano), ears back, and stalks off.
@scalzi My cat actually hissed at me and ran away. I'm no Jimi Hendrix, but I don't think I'm THAT bad.
@scalzi Our cats always leave the room when I start up the vacuum cleaner too.
I understand that the noise disturbs them and don't take it personally.
