Today I learned wtf a "Hurdy Gurdy" is.
I know Middle Age instruments demand godlike craftwork but this thing is ridiculous levels of complex. I thought I didn't like folk music, until I heard the bass drop on this Hurdy Gurdy track.

@timh @RobertMaguire Very cool!

@RobertMaguire Robert, do you have a link to that video? It's wonderful. And who's the artist? I want to hear more.
@allenholub @RobertMaguire I was going to ask the same thing!

@RobertMaguire

Let me introduce you to Eluveitie. They're a Folk Metal band that has a full time Hurdy Gurdy player.

@RobertMaguire I know/knew (used to work craft shows with him) a chap who can play Ravel's 'Bolero' on his hurdy gurdy.

Wow!

That was more than a straight transfer! And the one guy plays the hurdy gurdy, lute and flute? Very cool.

@RobertMaguire If you like Rock/Metal check out In Extremo as well ("Erdbeermund" for example). They use a lot of Hurdy Gurdy.

@RobertMaguire it has a relative in the Nyckelharpa, which has a similar tonality but uses a bow instead of crank and gets. Different. Results.
However. Also crazy complex in its design.

@spider @RobertMaguire I think this is the most Scandinavian thing I’ve ever seen
@ShaneB a friend keeps repeating “Scandinavian winters” whenever things like this show up. Something about long dark months and intricate indoor hobbies.
I have no idea what they’re talking about <.<
@RobertMaguire hell yeah love me some Hurdy Gurdy
@RobertMaguire so this is how they make western rpg soundtracks
@RobertMaguire I knew what a Hurdy-Gurdy was already but… this is making really struggle with wanting to get one and learn how to etc 😍

@RobertMaguire I see others have already recommended Patty Gurdy and the Sea of Thieves soundtrack, but for a nice look at the Hurdy Gurdy in TV soundtracks, check out Bear McReary, he talks a bit about composing the Black Sails intro.

@RobertMaguire What an amazing instrument. And what a player. And what a tune.
@RobertMaguire I have a band called Frostsköld in my town. The frontman also plays Hurdy Gurdy (the wheel lire they also call it?)

@RobertMaguire
If you proposed an instrument as complicated as the hurdy-gurdy today, people would laugh at you. This is despite the fact that we moderns have easy access to all manner of materials, and not just:

1. maple
2. hides
3. anvil
4. cat intestine
5. end of list

@RobertMaguire never listened to Led Zeppelin, huh??

@RobertMaguire in the centre of France, hurdy-gurdy is one of the most popular instruments for traditional musics. See for instance http://gilleschabenat.com/english/vielle/vielle.html or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgdfp-_Agt0

@RobertMaguire This and the reply thread is the best thing I've seen since joining Mastodon.
@RobertMaguire
Did you ever hear Donovan's song, Hurdy Gurdy Man? This instrument is amazing. Thanks for sharing!
@RobertMaguire I've always found these fascinating. Never heard one played quite like this before though.

Who is playing here, and what’s the piece of music?
@RobertMaguire @sommer this is great - how do the sustained notes get selected - or is there some sort of inherent echo?
@RobertMaguire @sommer my favourite hurdy gurdy story is that when they made it a playable instrument in the video game Sea of Thieves, the recording artist played and they had to tell them, “that was incredible. Could you play it, uh…shittier? These are pirates playing waterlogged instruments.”
@RobertMaguire Regine Chassagne occasionally plays it with Arcade Fire.

@RobertMaguire always thought they looked like someone wanted to metricate violin music but only had a balalaika, a butter churn, and accordion to hand.
