I do not have a podcast. Business Analyst. Cybersecurity Analyst. Former software architect, always a solution architect. Former Apple Consultant. Feminist. Weekend voluptuary. Introvert. Empath. Early Gen-X. Recovering BBS sysop. Mostly vegetarian. Friend of Carlotta. Sober 12+ years. Insanely happily married.

I am grateful to the Indigenous keepers of the traditional and unceded lands on which I live and work: the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, and the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. I am committed to respecting, listening to, and continuously learning from the diverse interests and perspectives of these and other Indigenous Peoples.

Why is Mastodon the best social medium in 2026?

Picture 1: If I share a post with some objectively good news, it gets 97 boosts and 140 likes.

Picture 2: If I share the same post on Threads, it gets zero interactions — zero! — because it contains a link to the competing social medium YouTube, and on Threads, Mark Zuckerberg has decided that the algorithm should not promote such content.

Threads is where the rich decide what we can talk about.

On Mastodon, we decide.

https://youtu.be/Txt3Wodav1o Wild video. Definitely science fiction. I’m increasingly concerned about the potential of an AI bubble that could adversely affect our economy, and this makes me wonder if Elon is just looking for another way to get richer. Do we really need data centres in space? (Where’s the hyper-loop Elon?)

I recently asked our financial advisor to move our nest egg away from exposure with AI related holdings. Being at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (https://centreoftheuniverse.org) a few weeks ago, the proliferation of SpaceX satellites seemed concerning too. While the young dreamer inside me hopes for a utopian future in which robots do my laundry, or my other chores, we’re still not seeing that really.

Something else that I wonder… how is it that Apple has made chips that already handle some AI compute locally, at lower power, on a device? — is it possible that some of the code for these LLMs is just bad and inefficient?

'It bodes well': New sightings bring hope endangered wolverine is returning to Labrador | CBC News

For decades, this ferocious scavenger has been absent from the Labrador landscape but there’s renewed hope the endangered wolverine might be making an official comeback.

Recently I read a post by some jackhole techbro who wants a default automatic feed algorithm here just like Big Social™.

Opening the door for AI bullshit is not even the worst part of this idea.

Folks, all of us here ARE the algorithm. Personal curation is a feature, not a bug.

We make Mastodon awesome by following people and boosting what we find meaningful, significant or just cool. That's how it works.

Let's keep making friends. Let's keep sharing. Let's keep Mastodon alive. Together. 💖

Holy shit.

Chikabesh speaks to Tapiskapeesim, the night sun

By Xavier KataquapitWhen I was a boy growing up in my home community of Attawapiskat on the James Bay coast, I was deathly afraid of looking at the full moon.I grew up in a very traditional Cree environment in my home community of Attawapiskat in northern Ontario. In the 1980s, my family and I only spoke Inineemoon or ‘James Bay Cree’ because it was the language our parents and grandparents spoke.

Grocery giants just can’t help themselves.

Underweight meat. Overweight profits.

Canadians are sick and tired of being ripped off.

A public option for groceries is overdue.

CBC investigation finds grocers Loblaw, Sobeys overcharging for underweight meat — again | CBC News

A CBC News secret shopping investigation has — once again — uncovered how several Loblaw-owned and Sobeys-affiliated stores are overcharging for underweight meat, despite claims last year that the grocery giants had taken steps to rectify the problem.
