Librarians and Teen Volunteers Spearhead Books Unbanned Initiative to Combat Censorship

@notsle this won't work!! Not immediately!
@notsle Boss move. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@notsle

While this is a nice move bolstering general education, how do they register? Do they have to provide identification?

Let's remember that the #Feds already used #Meta's data for picture ID search over a million times. During the #Inquisition, possessing heathen and otherwise banned books could cost you dearly. Who knows, what the future holds, and a teen certainly does not want to go "on record" with a book banned in his/her...

@notsle

...home state.

Inducing them to do so by means of requiring ID would be irresponsible by the library.

@HistoPol @notsle instead of being a keyboard warrior - you could have gone to the website to attempt to sign up as a teenager …. πŸ™„

@notsle

This is how you fight back effectively.

When they put up roadblocks, go around them.

Still fight to remove them, but go around in the meantime, achieving the goal either way.

@notsle Well done Brooklyn public library. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
#BrooklynFreeChoice
@notsle That is from a year ago. Is it still valid? Did they reinstitute it?
@notsle They started this a year ago. It's not new.
@notsle I donated to Brooklyn Public recently as a thank you for this and bought some swag from their webstore.
@notsle
Absolutely brilliant!!!
@notsle Wonderful!! Go libraries go!!! πŸ₯³ πŸ‘ πŸ“š ❀️ πŸ™Œ

@notsle I'm not sure they're still doing this. I paid $50 per year for an out of state Brooklyn Public Library card, but they discontinued that program a few months ago.

I'm not sure what they did with the free teen program.

@notsle

I wanted to fact check this before sharing and it’s true, but boy did I have to dig in their site. Seems not so kid friendly.

But here’s the info for easier boosting

Books Unbanned Inititative

Books Unbanned | Brooklyn Public Library

In April 2022, Brooklyn Public Library joined those fighting for the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, discover themselves, and form their own opinions. Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement, Books Unbanned is a response to an increasingly coordinated and effective effort to remove books from library shelves.

@notsle proud of my local library systems
@notsle I'm sure this will go over so well with the publishers that sure the Internet Archive πŸ˜•
@notsle Isn't this the exact same thing that the Internet Archive just lost a lawsuit over?

@notsle

Libraries are awesome! Here's how (for a limited time) individuals in the US, ages 13-21, can apply for a free Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) eCard, gaining access to BPL's eBook collection and learning databases.

@notsle now waiting for state-level mandated firewalls with lists of banned sites "to protect the children"...

@notsle
Librarians, the ultimate anticapitalist badasses !
@notsle only teens? i'd happily sign up for this myself
@notsle How long before the Great GOP Internet Firewall will filter them out? Strictly for the good of the kids!!!
@notsle Thank you for posting about this. I run two teen writing groups and I just let them all know about the opportunity.
@notsle Awesome! This just made my day. πŸ‘
@notsle that's an awesome move.
I can't believe when the library limits copies of an ebook
