Are there any national organizations that are supporting teachers who are targeted by anti-LGBT extremist groups for being supportive of LGBT students?

@Popehat Brett Bigham, the 2014 Oregon Teacher of the Year who was once fired after coming out, might have some good resources.

He's an ECRA ambassador, which is the Education Civil Rights Alliance, but their website appears to be gone.

The Educations Deans for Justice and Equity might also have some resources: https://educationdeans.org

@Popehat If so, please direct their attention towards Florida soon, okay Ken? 🙏
@jann @Popehat. They're watching. The relevant organizations are well aware of what is happening.
@Popehat PEN America (https://pen.org) and the work Every Library (https://www.everylibrary.org) are both on the front lines. of Book Banning, and thus heavily involved in supporting teachers targeted by these groups. Also: Red Wine and Blue (https://redwine.blue/). In Florida specifically: https://www.fftrp.org.

@Popehat. The most obvious place to start would be GLSEN, since this is explicitly their bailiwick. Look at the Task Force, Lamda Legal, GLAAD, and the ACLU, since this typically also involves more general civil liberties principles.
@Popehat. If you are particularly concerned about Florida, Equality Florida is an excellent organization that has been protesting all along.

@Popehat
There are several that support teachers who want to make their teaching more gender inclusive and supportive of lgbtqia youth

@Popehat If you are asking about litigation against public bodies whom the extremist groups influence, I would suggest contacting the ACLU's National LGBTQ Project. If you are asking about litigation against the extremists groups, that sounds more like the SPLC
@Popehat I am shocked, SHOCKED that FIRE isn't doing anything to support teachers who are being targeted for supporting LGBT students.
@halfcocked What do you think it would be in their wheelhouse to do?
@Popehat Roughly the same thing that was in their wheelhouse when they demanded that private entities not take punitive action against teachers who attended white supremacist rallies.

@halfcocked Can you be more specific?

Who should they demand to, and what should they demand from them?

@Popehat Can you be more specific, since you're the one looking for groups to do something?
@halfcocked @halfcocked Well, I was hoping that there were groups that provided advice and moral support to teachers being targeted by community extremist groups for this particular topic. Like, advise them on their rights, tell them what techniques are effective and what to avoid, etc.
@Popehat Ya, telling teachers what their rights are definitely sounds like something far outside of FIRE's mission statement.

@halfcocked I think you misunderstand what kind of help I’m asking for. The school isn’t stopping or disciplining the teachers. Community extremists are harassing and attacking them in the community.

But thanks for your input.

@Popehat @halfcocked “FIRE’s litigation team proactively seeks plaintiffs to participate in lawsuits that have the potential to set lasting legal precedents.” Seems to me that they could be looking for plaintiffs to enforce teachers’ rights to express pro-LGBT sentiments in the classroom.
@kyozou @halfcocked The issue isn’t the school letting them do it. The issue is community groups attacking them locally.
@Popehat @halfcocked I honestly think that you could find teachers who would say that their local government or school administration has targeted them for being supportive of LGBT students.

@Popehat @halfcocked

Teachers union should be treating an injury to one as an injury to all

@Popehat I mean, if the antigay groups are getting school admins to target the teachers, then FIRE is there for them.
@surcomplicated They’re not. It’s about community extremists saying terrible things about them.

@Popehat Here’s what a local teacher suggested: He should reach out to his site CTA/union rep bc that is our first local and most immediate line of defense - they can work with admin etc and if need be help him can get free legal consult thru union.
