So, Twitter   decided to pull a DeviantArt move and change its Terms Of Services to include anything you post there on their AI dataset, to re-publish your art and benefit from it without your consent or compensation.

 TIME TO DELETE YOUR ART PORTFOLIO ON TWITTER

I will only leave my contact information there, nothing else.

#Twitter #artistsonmastodon #TwitterAlert #AuthorsRights #AI #DeleteTwitter

@Victor_el_DM many of us had our art or creativity taken from us for the first years when some of us wrote prose and poetry off each other's writing... and why suddenly was unable to use our own acct passwords and such ,Hundreds of creative pieces done on Twitter, by many, Because when you are doing something on something someone else owns,you lose exclusiveness...just like when working, you are doing whatever for those you work for...we did so much and it was never done hardcopy for copyright.
Das könnte für euch interessant sein, @Fuchskind @Laburrini @ralphruthe
@Lapizistik @Fuchskind @ralphruthe Danke, aber das sind imho die alten Terms Of Use.
The Twitter term of service change mentioned in the toot above may interest you

@Victor_el_DM Nearly the only things I post there is my latest work, REALLY important things, and then how much I hate it there after the few minutes I spend there posting those things and how much better the fediverse is
@Victor_el_DM Has the bird site done ANYTHING right in the last year? 😩
@Victor_el_DM Whoa... When will this be implemented or is it already?

@AasaMariaHedberg @Victor_el_DM It all looks very much like what I remember from the old conditions, and other replies seem to confirm that. This is not anything new.

The conditions are very harsh for the users, but it’s the same with all similar sites, AFAIK. Facebook’s terms were part of the reason I left that waterhole.

@Victor_el_DM ah dang, time to delete all my tweets
@Victor_el_DM this phrasing (or a very similar one) is found in the TOS of every single social media site and translates to "if you post an image, we are legally allowed to show it to other people, in a potentially altered manner"
@charlotte @Victor_el_DM That was my understanding too...
@Victor_el_DM
Yeah, right, I give you all these rights and even those you haven't thought of yet.
Morons !
@Victor_el_DM Please would you edit this post to make clear that these TOS have been in place for many years and are not specifically linked to AI models?
@Victor_el_DM Funny thing is, I’ve been trying to delete posts on Twitter, and they just keep reappearing. First, if you purge almost a decade of posts as I did, then two years later download your archive, everything you’ve ever posted is still there. More recently, I manually deleted all of my 2019 posts. Next time I logged in, they were back. Not sure Twitter deletes anything, ever.
@Victor_el_DM As far as Iʼm concerned, compressing and decompressing uploaded images (for performance reasons) are also count as “reproduce”, “process”, and “adapt”.

This also does
not guarantee that someone else over an unknown Mastodon instance silently copy your art to build their own AI dataset. Or for other forms of research.
@Victor_el_DM I don't see anything about AI in this screenshot...
@sharkNserg There isn't. The TOS has said this for years.
@hughster @sharkNserg Yeah, you can look on the wayback machine and see that this is unchanged. I really wish people would double check this kind of thing before passing it on. Until there is active terminology in the TOS of that nature, it's your bog standard CYOA on technicalities of how social media platforms function. I'm certain some masto instances even have this terminology to CYOA.
@ceralor @sharkNserg It's fine to make a mistake, but not fine to refuse to correct it when it's been pointed out.

@hughster @ceralor @sharkNserg
Bandwagons do be like that. Someone poorly interprets something as terrible, exaggerates it then you got a storm of uneducated people taking that word as gospel and spreading it everywhere.

That's how misinformation is created.

@ceralor @hughster @sharkNserg honestly it’s a regular cycle on birdsite. some website (incl twitter) changes their TOS, someone stumbles over this paragraph in the TOS. This also happens every time discord changes their TOS with their class action lawsuit waiver (which, if you haven’t opted out before it’s already too late, it’s been in there since the game store launched )
@charlotte @ceralor @hughster yeah, I saw that post and thought "oh, is it time for everyone to panic about the normal social media image upload terms already?"
@ceralor @hughster @sharkNserg Thank you for pointing that out. I hadn't thought to check, and now (looking at a 2021 July snampshot) I see you're right... https://web.archive.org/web/20210726133102/https://twitter.com/en/tos
@Victor_el_DM maybe everyone removing their art images from Twitter can leave behind some AI-generated, fever-dream images where the Twitter owner is the main subject
@Victor_el_DM if you think that the art that you posted to Twitter was not already included in datasets used for other AI model training, you're kidding yourself.

@Victor_el_DM what did it say before?

Those look like the (lame) standard terms that social media think they need to show a post on a feed because of bizarre copyright overreach.

@Victor_el_DM

It's time to delete twitter all together!

@karlmorant @Victor_el_DM
It may be that as twit degenerates into another truth social it national be useful to security for as long as it takes to go bankrupt at least.
@Victor_el_DM
"I have to stay on Twitter or my art won't be stolen by a nazi" 🤡
Still people will stay, won't they?
People will put up with anything if it's convenient....
@Victor_el_DM TBF it's just time to delete Twitter.
@Victor_el_DM why complain? Just let go titter, start a new life!
@Victor_el_DM The TOS haven’t changed in years. 🙃

@Victor_el_DM @floe

A clause like this is standard on any platform. Sharing stuff that you made on multiple platforms is exactly what a social media platform does. There are a lot of nefarious things about twitter, but this isn't it.

If you post something on the web app, and they share it on the mobile app in other countries with auto-translation, they need your permission via a passage like this.

@Victor_el_DM this looks like standard social media boilerplate? It is basically what allows them to publish your tweets, have them embedded in websites, allow them to be auto-translated, etc.
@nev @Victor_el_DM yes and they can't really do what they want due to copyright law.
@Victor_el_DM Love seeing more people leave Twitter…
@Victor_el_DM @hack13 I suspect this is related to Twitter wanting to sue MSFT for using their data for training so now they can claim they have a sub license etc 🤔
@catgoat @Victor_el_DM @hack13
Nope, this entire section of the TOS has nothing to do whatsoever with any recent events.
This screenshot is taken from the 2018 TOS

Twitter Terms of Service

@Khosumi @catgoat @Victor_el_DM @hack13

Most, if not every, social media site has this entry in their TOS, because it allows them to actually host and serve the content you upload.

I see the initial Post semi-often, it's always the same "scare" with the site changed lol

@Khosumi @Victor_el_DM @hack13 oh lol yeah if it’s been the same since then, then the first post doesn’t rlly make sense at all.
@Victor_el_DM This has nothing to do with AI. It's a standard clause that sites use to assert the right to host content users post. Every few years someone spots this clause in a site's TOS and mistakes it to mean you're signing away your copyright. Even the DeviantArt debacle was false (the artist who assumed DeviantArt sold their Adventure Time art to Hot Topic forgot they had previously signed away merchandising rights to the company who originally commissioned the piece from them.)
@Victor_el_DM oof, glad I deleted my account when I did, that ship is sinking fast.

@Victor_el_DM I don't see any difference with the TOS that were introduced in 2020, at least on the section you highlighted. And the TOS before that were similar. Am I missing something?

Twitter Terms of Service

@fenarinarsa @Victor_el_DM Yeah, would like a little more informations too
@Victor_el_DM Hmm... well in one sense, I would expect them to have the right to distribute or even modify for distribution (e.g., translate, reformat). Reaching global users is what Twitter does after all. But "use?" Transform? That's pretty loose and it doesn't really define that much better further on.

@Victor_el_DM
So I write lyrics and poems.
Does that apply to them too?
Or only with photos and art?

Photos I have also posted but they are not necessarily anything special ...

Much I have already deleted...
A week ago, after I read something here.

@Victor_el_DM thanks for the heads up, here is the Tumblr post I made with a bit of info on why this matters https://www.tumblr.com/blade-maid/715133051223605248/note-for-artists-changes-not-yet-in-force-but-i?source=share

Note for artists Changes not yet in force, but I recommend moving your art portfolios off of Twitter if you haven't and do not want to grant a non-exclusive indefinite license to Twitter and it's pa…

I recall FB had a similar clause for the longest time but people still stayed. ‘People in the know’ made a lot of noise about it and then FB made a change. Normal folks weren’t even aware (or cared). Sad.
@Victor_el_DM
Isn't there a legal recourse?
@Victor_el_DM this seems like it would include text too, no? Which for folks relying on private accounts is...yikes
@Victor_el_DM Hasn't that been in the T&Cs of every social media ever?
@Victor_el_DM meh! That only affects people on Twitter. It serves them right for supporting a centralised, big business run network. That's what they do. And such terms and conditions are similar to other big tech ones.
@Victor_el_DM Thanks for sharing this. I boosted it. Twitter is evil.
@Victor_el_DM @chort of all the reasons to be mad at Musk, a bog standard TOS that’s legalese for “if you upload your pictures you’re implying it’s okay if we let people download them, in general” is not one of them. If there’s something shady that specifically relates to AI datasets that wasn’t already implied by every TOS on earth, consider highlighting that text instead
@Victor_el_DM
Mastodon, where I can read everything from Twitter.... must.🙄 Despite Filter... 🤷‍♀️

@Victor_el_DM ... this is standard TOS verbiage though???

Like, this has been in the Twitter TOS for years, and it is necessary legalese to give them the privilege they need to create optimized versions of whatever you upload for display in various ways through their service from previews in-post to full views to card embeds in places like discord that implement OGP...
