People are saying mean things about Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav making $39 million last year (and $203 million the year before), but he earns every penny of it with brilliant business decisions like:
* repositioning CNN as light beer Fox News
* shelving the finished Batgirl movie
* greenlighting a 70+ hour Harry Potter remake nobody wanted
* inexplicably renaming HBO

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav Pay Revealed

Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav’s pay package topped $39 million in 2022, down considerably from the staggering figure he hit in the year prior, thanks to a massive $203 million sto…

@maxkennerly Counterpoint: as an unemployed TV writer who might someday pitch at Max... or HBO? Or whatever it's called? I think David Sazlav is wise and kind and these are all great decisions.

@paulmather007 @maxkennerly I’d like to do more #TV #writing, too, Paul. Hope you get work, soon, & can share leads.

The Vow: Trials within Trials, by Yahia Lababidi

A writer’s time attending the theatrical trial that became the docuseries The Vow leads him to reflect more generally on the culture-wide moral relativism and abuse of language that allow a cult leader to inflict his damage.

@maxkennerly I could have done the same for about 1/2 price if they'd only asked.

When someone is rebranding there's always a bad reason behind it.

@maxkennerly
Back in the day when I was working on my MBA, we had a course studying marketing misadventures. At that time we looked at the failure of New Coke and Edsel.

Now we could easily look at Sears, Radio Shack, Kmart, even Montgomery Wards. So clearly very high paid CEOs can make some pretty poor decisions.

That's the business world. Big failures have happened in government also, but the cover up efforts are bigger. I'll let you make your own list.

John Oliver rips HBO Max parent for canceling shows: 'Series of tax write-offs'

“HBO Max: It’s not TV. It’s a series of tax-write-offs to appease Wall Street,” Oliver said.

@maxkennerly @Migueldeicaza may he be sent aboard the Infinity Train where he belongs
@maxkennerly * taking on tens of billions of dollars of debt to purchase Warner, which dwarfs the combined company's earnings.
@maxkennerly Let's not forget removing beloved original HBO series from the site, like Westworld. And I'm convinced he cost us a 5th season of Succession. I'm sure Jesse Armstrong would have wanted to do one more if it weren't for Zaslav's budget cuts. But getting rid of a well known and loved brand and replacing it with MAX? Adding commercial tiers? That horrid logo? Blech. The only other CEO in entertainment who was as ill-suited to the job and as disliked is Bob Chapek and he's gone.
@maxkennerly if you can't understand it then you're clearly under qualified for the position.
@biggie @maxkennerly That’s bootlicker talk. He could get his finger slammed in the car door and you’d say “masterful gambit sir!”
@maxkennerly CNN is a disaster area. It’s not like it has strong competition from MSNBC & CNN has so many more resources. It is a real shame because we need better news services than we are receiving.
@maxkennerly He's just in a race with the Muskrat to see who can destroy more value faster.
