WE DID IT! The Texas Observer will remain open!

Our board just voted to rescind both the layoffs and the closure. We'll have more news soon, but we believe this is the start of a very positive transformation at our publication—and you were a huge part of it. THANK YOU! You proved to the world that #TexasNeedsAnObserver!

We Did It, Y'all! Texas Observer Will Remain Open!

"Thanks to the extraordinary success of the staff’s fundraising this week," the publication's board of directors voted to rescind layoffs and shutdown.

The Texas Observer

Understandably, folks want an update on our Board of Directors and other updates on our future. We do hope to have more good news soon. In the meantime, we'd direct you to this statement from the current board for a sense of the tone of their apology. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23732385-tdf-statement-3_29_23-1

They do understand that #TexasNeedsAnObserver!

This is JUST the first step in saving the Texas Observer. We have enough money to keep our doors open, pay writers and the bills, but we'll need more help to make our publication sustainable. We'll have more information soon (in the meantime, the GoFundMe is still open and growing ... https://www.gofundme.com/f/laid-off-texas-observer-journalists-and-staff) on different ways to help.

In the meantime, come to our party on Friday! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/texas-observer-final-friday-tickets-601759337377

#TexasNeedsAnObserver—We'll have a big #Newstodon Friday party too!

@TexasObserver @TexasObserver AMERICA, Texans had to get a gofundme to protect free speech. That’s not because free speech cost too much. It’s because Russian propagandists have lessened the value of truth so we don’t even know we can’t afford the lies. They’re not coming for your guns--they’re coming for your democracy and folks will be too busy attending funerals to notice when democracy is gone.
@TexasObserver Charge more than $.99/month for the digital-only subscription! I don't want more paper to deal with, but I'd happily pay more for the digital subscription.
@TexasObserver SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!! And I'm happy to pay more for my subscription also. So glad to hear this. So happy for you - and for us, your readers.

@TexasObserver

Wonderful news. Congratulations. 🍾🎊🎉

@TexasObserver Looks like I have to straighten out the issue with my subscription after all. I was charged, but never received an email verification, and the site won't send another. This is a problem that I'm happy to have, though!
@SplatterDaddy we'll make sure to have someone reach out and will work to sort out any issues with digital subscriptions asap.
@TexasObserver best news we’ve all had in ages! congrats!!
@TexasObserver congratulations. Use my donation for a round of celebratory drinks.
@TexasObserver Yeehaw! Really glad to hear it!

@TexasObserver Good News, indeed.

Can't do much, but I will setup a recurring donation.

@TexasObserver I hope you’re able to vote in a new board, too.
@travis so do we. We hope this is just the first step and we'll have more news soon.
@TexasObserver We are SO SO SO happy for you!!!!
@damemagazine we're so excited! Thank you for being there with us
@TexasObserver We'll always be here for you!
@damemagazine @TexasObserver Tjis is the best news of the week. Thank y’all for hanging in there and not giving up.
@damemagazine @TexasObserver Honestly, I really think you two SHOULD get a room. :-)

Congrats @TexasObserver

@winnipegfreepress I hope you're covering this!

@teledyn

We're a regional newspaper based in Winnipeg; we don't often report on events outside Manitoba, unless they affect or involve Manitobans.

However we do publish wire-service news from around the globe, so if The Associated Press reports on this matter it would likely appear on our pages.

@winnipegfreepress

Oh yes, of course, but the news here relates to journalism on the Fediverse, and this is the first real test of "is it worthwhile" and our friends in Texas have proven now that, in their case, however special it may be, yes, it is VERY worthwhile. And so I thought it might interest you :)

And yes, I expect the big services will pick it up too, but you heard it first :)

@TexasObserver I am beyond thrilled for you! Texas NEEDS the Texas Observer. And those of us outside of Texas WANT the Texas Observer!
@TexasObserver Congratulations, glad to hear it!!
@TexasObserver I threw my arms up and yelled 'Yes!' at my computer when I got the last gofundme update. Now, off to subscribe as a yearly supporter.
@TexasObserver Woo hoo! Happy to have contributed a little to the GoFundMe.
@TexasObserver
!Felicidades! A big thanks for all you do and a nod to the board for having the courage to change their minds!

@TexasObserver

Wooooooooooo!!!!!! 🥳

So many congratulations!

@TexasObserver

Excellent news! Just subscribed to the digital edition as I'm assuming you can't send the print version to the UK.

@TexasObserver

A wonderful turn of events! Congratulations!

@TexasObserver
Mastodon now has a network effect success story.

Maybe now more journalists (the real kind) will leave the birdsite and come here.

@TexasObserver
Congratulations, now can you please start reporting the REAL Texas again? Start with a Uvalde retrospective to demonstrate "The news cycle moves on, but Texas stands still til justice is meted out to those families, and every family of a preventable school shooting."
@swagpussc We understand and haven't moved on and don't plan to do so. @gusbova just won a Texas Institute of Letters award for this piece, published in August, about the civil rights history of Uvalde past and present. Gus has continued to report on developments ever since and we'll continue to cover. Long term coverage like this is so important to us, too. Thank you for your message! https://www.texasobserver.org/uvalde-guns-protest-walkout/
Uvalde Rising: In Tragedy's Wake, a Fiery Movement for Justice Emerges

The typically quiet town of 15,000 knew another uprising a half-century ago.

@TexasObserver How can we (the community around you, and also, non-profit newsrooms like The 19th) help you continue to transform and find sustainability?
@ben bookmarking this to reply to later, thank you Ben
@TexasObserver yay!!! Congratulations!!! 🎉
@TexasObserver Y'all mustered an impressive counter-proposal. Great example of thinking on your feet and taking action while you have a chance.
@TexasObserver
I’m raising one for Molly Ivins tonight!!! Congratulations 🎊🎉🍾🎈
@TexasObserver Such amazing news! So glad!
@TexasObserver Texas needs media that is not afraid to report the hard truths of the dangerous path that its namesake is headed down.
