Remember: We take care of us. We keep each other safe.

That was true yesterday, and it will be true tomorrow.

If U.S. lawmakers care about China and other foreign countries engaging in espionage on U.S. citizens, it’s time to speak up in favor of encryption by default. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/10/salt-typhoon-hack-shows-theres-no-security-backdoor-thats-only-good-guys
Salt Typhoon Hack Shows There's No Security Backdoor That's Only For The "Good Guys"

At EFF we’ve long noted that you cannot build a backdoor that only lets in good guys and not bad guys. Over the weekend, we saw another example of this.

After all, hardly anyone who completes a given task with the help of a tool will take the time to pause and go, “Well, _that_ was enjoyable!” 🤔

To put it another way, a simple “Done with that one!” is plenty of an “emotional response.” 🤷‍♂️

That applies to software just as much as it does to a hammer or a screw driver — even though many a #UX designer thinks otherwise. In other words, when done right, #UX/#IxD is not a glorious job. But it's an important and a deeply rewarding one. (2/2)

@dotmariusz I've yet to read the article, but I already completely agree with your comment: The primary point of good #UX is not enjoyment, let alone delight.

Especially in a commercial context, it's simply about letting users get their work done. If a product supports users in that goal, and gets in their way as little as possible, that is enough. (1/2)

Seeing lots of people say Three Mile Island was the worst nuclear disaster in the USA. I think people need to be more aware of the Church Rock uranium mill spill. It happened four months after the Three Mile Island incident, and was way more of a disaster. The catch is that it happened in a place that is mostly indigenous land, so it's not made up to be a big deal. Read up on it and learn about how it still affects indigenous people.

The more our #computing experience is becoming infantilized (filters, “beautifiers”, all sorts of unknown #AI processing), the more you’ll see this sort of thing happening

On Sept 15, Guatemalans celebrate independence from Spain. This evening, we ate tamales infused with raisins, olives, peppers, & prunes.

In the US , many mythologize history as a ratchet of inevitable progress secured by enduring movie moments. Latin American history doesn't offer the same illusions.

When I mark 09/15, I remember layers of growth & loss in the flawed quest for human dignity & freedom. In my history are oppressed & oppressors, and each of us must wrestle with who we will be.

If you enjoy Japanese woodblock prints, that appreciation puts you in good company: with Vincent van Gogh, for example, and perhaps even more flatteringly, with many of your fellow readers of Open Culture.

I"m convinced that any software deployed for medical reasons - implants, tools, analytics, doesn't matter - needs toolchains that generate reproducible builds stored in escrow that are made free and public the moment device support ends.

Their Bionic Eyes Are Now Obsolete and Unsupported

These early adopters found out what happened when a cutting-edge marvel became an obsolete gadget... inside their bodies.

@BlackAzizAnansi I've seen enough blood in my 30 year manufacturing career. OSHA is the only thing that keeps horrific injuries at a tolerable rate, which should be zero. I used to investigate workplace injuries and saw enough blood to learn how to smell it. This is not normal. I saw crushings, amputations, impailments, and a friend had to clean up a decapitation and place it in the freezer, because the coroner was unavailable during the holiday weekend. The only two things that prevent this madness are unions and OSHA. I will retire before dealing with this greed again. And no, injuries do not increase production, quite the opposite. I'm tired.
