Illinois’ Bold Move: 60,000 HEPA Air Purifiers To Be Distributed In Schools To Battle Respiratory Viruses.

Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today that the state is launching a $29.6 million program to distribute more than 60,000 HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) purifiers to Illinois schools to help reduce the transmission of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.

South Korean Governmen funds mandatory air purifiers at schools

The government passed a revised school health act to improve quality of air and safety at preschools and primary and secondary schools.

The law requires installation of air-cleaning and air quality sensors in classrooms and allows state funds to cover costs. School councils and parents are also permitted to attend classroom air quality monitoring sessions, which will be conducted each semester.

Government funds mandatory air purifiers at schools - The Korea Herald

The South Korean government on Tuesday passed a revised school health act to improve quality of air and safety at preschools and primary and secondary schools. The revised law was one of five fine dust-related legislations that passed the same day. The revised law requires the installation of air-cleaning systems and air quality sensors in classrooms and allows the use of state funds to cover the costs. School counc...

@whn The South Korean action was done in 2019.
@yaneerbaryam 50 years from now the West will do the same. Maybe. Probably not. No.
@yaneerbaryam @whn I have NO IDEA why the US Government didn't do this THREE FUCKING YEARS AGO
@yaneerbaryam @whn our schools in this province also had air filters
@yaneerbaryam @whn whilst this is an excellent initiative, without forethought there is every chance that this looks good on paper but doesn’t deliver much risk reduction if the solutions chosen do not deliver a reasonable clean air delivery rate at an acceptable noise level.
We need to know the details on the tendering process.

Pushing against a train is harder than with it.

@yaneerbaryam @whn @davidelfstrom correct, but
1. other bodies look for examples on how to do it
2. If it’s done badly it provides another example to criticise efforts that spend public money without delivering real value.

I have emailed the contact of this initiative to help understand their process and provide some constructive suggestions on how to optimise the spending of this public money to achieve the best possible outcomes.

@PieterPeach @yaneerbaryam @whn @davidelfstrom My concern is where they place the air filters. Drawing air with viruses past people to get to the the filter may defeat the purpose. On the other hand, drawing the air up towards the ceiling away from people to be filtered would be safer.
@samhainnight @yaneerbaryam @whn @davidelfstrom Upwards flow would provide the most flexibility in terms of placement options to avoid drafts and thermal discomfort.
@yaneerbaryam @whn It seems bold in the current insane political environment, but it's really the minimum that can be done to protect the health of the students.

@yaneerbaryam @whn this is AWESOME news!! Thanks for sharing.

Would love to boost but seeing this image doesn’t have descriptions. Could you edit and add? Something like “empty hallway of a school lined with lockers” could be great

@yaneerbaryam @whn cool. My state saw those funds and built... a rainbow architecture gate to a park. 🙄
@yaneerbaryam @whn Pity they don't work! Airlines use them and flight is a major source of respiratory infection.

@russellt @yaneerbaryam @whn

I think they help, they alone do not prevent infections reliably though, rather they constitute ONE piece of the swiss cheese model if you will. They also need to be implemented properly for infection prevention specifically, not just to improve the quality of air in general (which is still a good thing of course)

@yaneerbaryam @whn I'd like to see more monitoring.
