What’s happening in Uganda with criminalization of even *being* LGBT, with death penalties written into law for some people, should and must shock the world into action.
@georgetakei spoiler: this is the end goal of the GOP.
@LadyDragonfly @georgetakei
double spoiler: guess where the money for the campaigns leading to those laws came from.
Who wrote such a draconian law, and why? Is it some religious propaganda? Or good old secular bigotry?

@csolisr @georgetakei

There is a lot of history behind Uganda's anti-LGBT laws but if you are interested in how they got here the 2013 film "God Loves Uganda" is a pretty good place to start.

Anti-gay sentiment had previously existed on the continent, but white American religious groups have given it a boost.

@georgetakei in the past, when this happened in Russia, it was aided by the efforts of US "ministries" to the country. I wonder if that's the case here too?

Yes, it is. There is an entire documentary on how missionaries have been successfully implementing their theocratic beliefs, including anti-queer ones, in Uganda.

(There may even be a watchable version with hardcoded non-English subtitles on YT right now, but I wouldn't know anything about that.)

@georgetakei Should. Must. But won't.
@georgetakei All that stuff was engineered by the National Prayer Breakfast freaks. Hillary Clinton was one of them. Tons of top Dems participate in that shit.
@georgetakei tell the GOP their number one goal is EXACTLY like a third-world African country.

@georgetakei
Wonder when the Ugandans will realise they're still under the colonial yoke - the English introduced the Penal Code into their colonies in the 1800s; so many of their former colonies' criminalisation of alternative sexuality is based on this.

Seems Ugandans haven't figured that out yet and still think of themselves as a colony, while all the other former English colonies have moved forward towards more enlightened policy.

Then again, it helps kleptocrats to keep people divided.

The British colonial origins of anti-gay laws

The British colonial empire spread laws that criminalized homosexuality. Many of these laws are still there.

@georgetakei Damn, I thought Arnold Cunningham fixed Uganda on his mission. Too bad.

@georgetakei

I totally agree, George, but nothing can change this until people admit Christianity allows this to occur. These people do this because of the abrahamic monotheisms teaching them to be evil.

@georgetakei  At least the Pope should act by enabling a bull that would excommunicate those who want to persecute anyone due to their sexual orientation, not only in Uganda but around the World.
@georgetakei B...b...but I thought Uganda is the role model for America to follow. Isn't that what Tucker Carlson and Republicans want? That is to bring back America to Uganda's current level ?
@georgetakei Yeah, that is some fucked up shit. Why aren't we done with this?
@georgetakei What are everyone's thoughts on this?
@georgetakei it's still too far away for most people to take an interest in. Like most things Africa. Even for the 'good guys', there's more than enough going on right next door. The christorepugnant party has succeeded in 'america first' by fucking up this country so bad that people don't have the energy to be outraged over anything outside our borders.
@georgetakei Florida: “Hold my lukewarm mass-produced beer-like liquid.”
@georgetakei If I recall correctly, these laws were written with consultation and pressure from American Christian Nationalists.
@georgetakei what doyou suggest? #invasion ?
@groms @georgetakei Apply sanctions to the source of the problem - the US citizens who have worked to make this happen.
@georgetakei clearly, Uganda doesn't know the way

I Demand LOUD PUBLIC censure and demands for its removal, from ALL Governments

@georgetakei It’s heartbreaking

American Christians did that, the rat-bastards.

@georgetakei American Christians went there and convinced the government to start attacking gay people. Americsn Christians are the most despicable people on the planet.
@georgetakei
Probably driven by US churches to overshadow the prosecution of trans people happening in USA in the media…
If everybody is looking at Uganda, they won’t notice when the christo-fascist eradicate transgender people in the US… is how they planned it

@georgetakei

There are lots of things that must shock the world into action. This is one of the most minor ones. For example, did you know that the US military is killing random people around the world with drone strikes?

@georgetakei Uganda started the process a few years ago. It's only been exacerbated by the presence of street preachers spurred on by an American evangelist. The re-election of that corrupt dictator Obasanjo has only made it worse. Those preachers need to be vacuumed off the streets...
@georgetakei imo all countries that criminalize being lgbtqia+ should be sanctioned until they legalize it.
@georgetakei It’s shocking that we’re heading in that direction
