Tallahassee principal fired after parents complain Michelangelo statue of David is 'pornographic'

Hope Carrasquilla was pushed out of Tallahassee Classical School after three parents complained that their kids were 'upset' by Michelangelo's David, the world's most famous sculpture.

@Popehat you might want to read the interview with the school board chair from this Florida school. It’s… something https://slate.com/human-interest/2023/03/florida-principal-fired-michelangelo-david-statue.html
An Interview With the School Board Chair Who Forced Out a Principal After Michelangelo’s David Was Shown in Class

"Well, we’re Florida, OK?"

@SarahOestreich @Popehat
This is beyond scary. What is wrong with these people? This is so far from anything I can even imagine — his thinking is as alien to me as the dreams of an octopus.
@SarahOestreich I’m surprised only by the observation that this story is getting so much attention and seems to shock readers. This has been a growing trend in Florida (and other places) for some time. When I spoke out to express my concerns years ago, my minority voice was stomped out by the larger ‘parents rights’ forces. The larger question: do we want to be a society where parents have the right to control what their children learn and do not learn? The answer is apparently yes.
@SarahOestreich The sentence “We don’t use pronouns.” is just *chef’s kiss*
@SarahOestreich @Popehat My favorite bit:
@grammasaurus @SarahOestreich @Popehat (Narrator: the “Halloween costume” probably involved blackface.)

@saint_monkey @SarahOestreich @Popehat my gawd…..please tell me….

oh right—we’re talking about FL, aren’t we?

@SarahOestreich it’s more than something. Wow

@SarahOestreich @Popehat This part is extra-special:

"We didn’t remove her. She resigned ... I went to her last week and offered her two letters. One was a voluntary resignation, and another a letter that said if she decided not to resign, I was going to ask the board to terminate her ..."

So, no, definitely not removed by the board.

@angusm @SarahOestreich @Popehat
Notice how he brought up its a Right to work state- fire at will state.

@angusm @SarahOestreich @Popehat

"WE didn't remove HER. SHE resigned."

...

"WE don't use pronouns. WE teach THEM phonics."

Amazing.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat Hey Siri, what is constructive dismissal for an improper cause, and is admitting the elements in a published interview bad?
@curtosis @SarahOestreich @Popehat
If its as right to work state, they can do that, cant they?

@Katrags @SarahOestreich @Popehat As my lawyer put it … saying you can fire someone at will* for NO reason doesn’t mean you can fire them for a BAD (i.e. unlawful) reason.

*At-will employment and right-to-work are different, though usually occur together.

@curtosis @SarahOestreich @Popehat
But the question is, with Florida's changing laws, is the reason the Principal was fired considered a bad, or unlawful reason?

@SarahOestreich @Popehat "The rights of parents, that trumps the rights of kids. Teachers are the experts? Teachers have all the knowledge? Are you kidding me? I know lots of teachers that are very good, but to suggest they are the authorities, you’re on better drugs than me."

Florida is screwed. If DeSantis becomes the next president, we're all screwed.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat

It’s redidculous that these nut bars are involved in education.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat it’s like the principal believes some kind of warning before viewing is appropriate, lest it trigger some odd thoughts. If only there was a term for that…
@wesflinn @SarahOestreich @Popehat
If you enroll your child in a school focused on Classical education, you should be upset if they DO NOT learn about Michelangelo and the David.
According to the published curriculum, they have already had 2 years of ancient Greece and Rome, meaning they have seen marble nudes before and with some regularity.
@SarahOestreich @Popehat oh this line is great: " The mission of the school shows that standards are important—even poor people have standards."
@SarahOestreich @Popehat I just... wow. "Something" is a good description. The redefinition of "classic education" and constant beating of the "parental rights" drum as the entire justification for everything just hurts. .. especially since he's also claiming the teachers aren't any sort of authority... which should basically be their position as educators. o.o;;
@SarahOestreich @Popehat Holy hell that went off the deep end, and just kept getting deeper.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat "I know lots of teachers that are very good, but to suggest they are the authorities, you’re on better drugs than me."

Oh my... Tell me you don't respect teaching as a profession without saying you don't respect teaching as a profession.

@Crell @Popehat that was a particularly bad section, but the one that actually made me laugh was when he mentioned Kois having a 212 number, as if he had a “New York elite” line teed up but when Dan said he was in Virgina, he was like, well, good enough.
@SarahOestreich Everyone north of the I-10 is a damyankee

@SarahOestreich @Crell @Popehat Right? And then he launched right into an attack on Virginia's schools as if we don't have one of the better (and better funded) school systems in the country!

In fairness I think we may have dropped back a bit, but we should still be in the top 10.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat parental rights are their biggest priority, unless that parent wants their kid to learn real history, or to be vaccinated, or to be addressed by their preferred pronouns….
@Popehat @SarahOestreich
By “the whole thing”, I think he means David’s penis.
@SarahOestreich @Popehat @brouhaha Oh, look, just the evidence needed for CPS to come take his kids away. He’s peanut butter hula hoops crazy.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat

“Even poor people have standards”

He seems to think this is a new revelation that should surprise people

@SarahOestreich @Popehat glad the people in charge are so level headed and don’t pay attention to the culture war nonsense /s

@SarahOestreich @Popehat Oh, god, the tortured logic to claim that she wasn't "removed". "She walked the plank voluntarily, to get away from the gun to her head."

Reminds me of the constant arguments from our local Moms For "Liberty" folks that they aren't "banning" books from school libraries, since copies can be acquired elsewhere.

And then never brought to the school, under penalty of expulsion or arrest.

But "banning"? Heavens, no. Where's my fainting couch?

@SarahOestreich @Popehat Yeah, that changes my whole line of questions on this case from the legal to the neuropsychiatric.

@SarahOestreich @Popehat

You live in New York?

Virginia.

You’ve got a 212 number. That’s New York.

@Popehat @SarahOestreich “The rights of parents, that trumps the rights of kids. Teachers are the experts? Teachers have all the knowledge? Are you kidding me? I know lots of teachers that are very good, but to suggest they are the authorities, you’re on better drugs than me.” 😳😱
@SarahOestreich @Popehat i was asked to censor the entire Sistine Celling to talk to upper level high schoolers (premptively), so not surprised at all.
Here in KY btw, were the FL extreme laws haven’t (yet) passed.
@drantjegamble @Popehat asked by whom? This does such a disservice to young people and their education. Growing up in New York I used to go to The Met with my mother but also on school field trips, and yes there was nudity in the art. I know the head of the school board was planning on speaking derisively about New York (he had to settle for Virgina instead) so he probably thinks this was a mistake and I wasn’t mature enough for it. But he would be wrong.
@SarahOestreich @Popehat The faculty running the program.
@SarahOestreich @Popehat
Been told in this and similar situations that I ‘need to remember where we are’.
@drantjegamble @Popehat where you are? A school where the objective is to teach. What do they think will happen if *high schoolers* see nudity? This idea that nudity is inherently sexual and need to be protected from art is ridiculous. And one can only assume if they see this is a problem, sex-ed is a no-go. Oof I’m sorry—for you, and the students
@SarahOestreich @Popehat you liberals never get it. It starts with David, and next thing you know they are showing off the Venus de Milo’s dirtypillows.
